On a widescreen TV a full screen movie will have black bars on the left and right side of the screen.

Set your TV to the stretch mode for 4x3 whatever that is. My is called Just on the Panasonic.

Casablanca is in its original Academy Format of 4:3, that was how it was shot and that is how it is presented.

In all of its glory.

Yes, this is how it looked. Until 1953 just about all films had this AR. This is not full screen but OAR.

Yeah it's 4:3
and amazingly looks fantastic for a 65 year old black and white film.
They did an amazing job retouching it.

I wonder how many people don't know that movies weren't always widescreen.

Damn. And here I was thinking that films had always been "talkies", and in colour :D

I took a date to see Gone with the Wind during its rerelease and ran into the same problem. She couldnt figure out why it wasnt taking up the whole screen.

And to think that it was only a year or two ago that we were struggling to make people understand widescreen, and those "not as god intended" black bars at the top and bottom.
