I might have to buy an HD-DVD player just for this movie. Mark Zimmer 03-13-07, 05:55 PM I am going to wait for reviews....there are quite a few lousy masters of this movie floating around in its DVD incarnations and I will want to make sure they've done this right for HD. Sorax 03-13-07, 07:10 PM Studio Canal acquired Optimum and their release tied with the Criterion disc in this review (http://www.new.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare2/ran.htm), so I'm expecting a great presentation. But according to this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9356544&&#post9356544) the release will not have english subtitles. That might be a deal-breaker for me. Has anyone heard more about this issue? pkde 03-13-07, 07:27 PM On the German equivalent of imdb is an entry about the HD-DVD which shows all subtitles to be featured on it. The German special edition DVD of Ran, for instance, featured both, English audio and subtitles. The HD-DVD features none of the above. Here is a link, but it's only German: http://www.ofdb.de/view.php?page=fassung_vorab&fid=12004&vid=6089 Translated excerpt: Tonformat: (audio formats) Deutsch (DTS-HD 2.0) (German) Französisch (DTS-HD 5.1) (French) Japanisch (DTS-HD 5.1) (Japanese) Untertitel: (<- subtitles) Deutsch (German) Dänisch (Danish) Finnisch (Finnish) Französisch (French) Niederländisch (Dutch) Norwegisch (Norwegian) Schwedisch (Swedish) jellow 03-13-07, 07:37 PM Making a post to hit 5. Sorry for this, I want to post a url next... :) jellow 03-13-07, 07:41 PM I found this post on DVD Talk so take it for what it worth: ..."As to Ran...Studio Canal will be introducing an English-friendly release through their new British offshoot Optimum this summer." Link to the post is here: DVD Talk Post (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=488577) I have one of the crappy transfer DVD's of Ran (can't remember which studio) , so I hope to pick up the HD DVD when it is released. gerrynole 03-13-07, 07:46 PM up for sale at sendit .com the UK.$32 turns out its not in stock yet. Sendit .com is an UK outfit so I assumed there would be english subtitles. Guess I'll cancel http://www.sendit.com/video/item/7001000131526 It's by Optimum so maybe it will have English subs Capek 03-13-07, 07:59 PM I am going to wait for reviews....there are quite a few lousy masters of this movie floating around in its DVD incarnations and I will want to make sure they've done this right for HD. Clips of Ran can be seen in the opening trailer that plays on Studio Canal HD-DVDs. It looks fantastic, so I'm expecting great things, but still, we won't know for sure until the actual disk is released. marcusbryan 03-13-07, 09:24 PM WHAT Reading this article has made my day! I think I just failed my Math final exam so this is great news. ChrisWiggles 03-13-07, 09:33 PM I hope it is indeed from the same master of the Criterion release, because that release was excellent. I have the other two R1 DVD releases and they are terrible. gerrynole 03-15-07, 06:31 PM Dear Gerry, We have decided not to release this title for technical reasons. Here is a link to our old and upcoming HD releases: http://www.optimumdvdstore.com/search.php?g=&q=hd Thanks for your query and we apologize if this is causing any inconvenience. Regards.
