Greatest film of all time. I might have to buy an HD-DVD player just for this movie.

I am going to wait for reviews....there are quite a few lousy masters of this movie floating around in its DVD incarnations and I will want to make sure they've done this right for HD.

Studio Canal acquired Optimum and their release tied with the Criterion disc in this review (http://www.new.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare2/ran.htm), so I'm expecting a great presentation. But according to this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9356544&&#post9356544) the release will not have english subtitles. That might be a deal-breaker for me. Has anyone heard more about this issue?

On the German equivalent of imdb is an entry about the HD-DVD which shows all subtitles to be featured on it.
The German special edition DVD of Ran, for instance, featured both, English audio and subtitles.
The HD-DVD features none of the above.

Here is a link, but it's only German:

Translated excerpt:

Tonformat: (audio formats)
Deutsch (DTS-HD 2.0) (German)
Französisch (DTS-HD 5.1) (French)
Japanisch (DTS-HD 5.1) (Japanese)

Untertitel: (<- subtitles)
Deutsch (German)
Dänisch (Danish)
Finnisch (Finnish)
Französisch (French)
Niederländisch (Dutch)
Norwegisch (Norwegian)
Schwedisch (Swedish)

I found this post on DVD Talk so take it for what it worth:

..."As to Ran...Studio Canal will be introducing an English-friendly release through their new British offshoot Optimum this summer."

Link to the post is here: DVD Talk Post (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=488577)

I have one of the crappy transfer DVD's of Ran (can't remember which studio) , so I hope to pick up the HD DVD when it is released.

turns out its not in stock yet.

Sendit .com is an UK outfit so I assumed there would be english subtitles.
Guess I'll cancel

It's by Optimum so maybe it will have English subs

Clips of Ran can be seen in the opening trailer that plays on Studio Canal HD-DVDs. It looks fantastic, so I'm expecting great things, but still, we won't know for sure until the actual disk is released.

WHAT Reading this article has made my day! I think I just failed my Math final exam so this is great news.

I hope it is indeed from the same master of the Criterion release, because that release was excellent. I have the other two R1 DVD releases and they are terrible.

Dear Gerry,

We have decided not to release this title for technical reasons.

Here is a link to our old and upcoming HD releases:
