View Full Version : TV placement in home theater
Hi,
I have a dedicated home theater (nothing fancy, just a bonus room on top of garage) and now I am planning to watch TV (gonna buy a 50" panny plasma or something like that) in the same room. My problem is the placement of the TV. I dont want to place/mount it near/on a side wall and bend my neck to watch it; I want it placed in the center. The screen (projector) is fixed mounted on the wall and I don't know how it will work out with the TV. Is there a good stand with really solid casters that I can use' but then dragging TV+other stuff on that stand with all the wires back and forth.....Please help me out here... Thanks in advance! Any comments highly appreciated!

Thanks very much Angela! pic attached!
IHaveAMullet 03-12-07, 10:07 PM To get this straight, you would like the ability to watch TV where the PJ screen is, and then be able to cart it out of the way when you want to watch the PJ? Am I correct?

Exactly! Thanks!

A 50" TV placed 6 feet away (in front) from the wall/screen will give us about 9 feet distance from seats. On the left side of the screen is a door and on the right about 2-3 feet space with slanting ceiling on both sides. Right now we have a 32 inch LCD on the right side, quite close to the seating (not visible in the pic) which will go in the kitchen/dinette area.
bump...some input please......
bcarlsen 03-22-07, 04:21 PM It sounds a little dangerous to move a 50" plasma around on a cart. A projection TV would be a little more stable. You can also get a bigger picture and a 1080p display for the same money vs. a plasma. You might not find a cart for sale for this purpose, but it would be simple to build one. Just make sure it has a nice wide base so there's not chance of it tipping over.
MidLife 03-22-07, 04:47 PM For a time, I had the satelite receiver hooked up to my projector through the s-video input and the audio through my receiver. Is this an option? Do you have cable TV? Another option is a TV tuner card on a home-theater PC.
Not sure with your setup there is a good solution. Constantly moving a TV is going to be a real pain after awhile (Think about the power cord and cables). If your screen was a little higher you could use a cabinet with a mechanical lift.
BTW: Is your center channel speaker sitting on the floor?
Steve Collier 03-23-07, 10:01 AM Put the TV on the wall behind the screen. Wind up the screen when you want to watch TV. Or simply get used to watching TV through the projector all the time - that's what I do.
bqmeister 03-23-07, 05:00 PM How attached are you really to that screen?
A pulldown screen would make your job SOOOOOO much easier.
BTW - what size is that? It looks big.

Yes, I do that with Samsung OTA HDTV receiver - component input. PC is also set up with ATI HDTV wonder - DVI. BUT I simply want to watch TV in a normally lit room on a plasma TV instead of making the room dark (which I still do for things like oscars/american idol finale etc.).

You understand my pain! And yeah, center is sitting on the floor.

The wall is about 19 ft. away from the seats - too far for a 50 inch plasma. Screen is big - about 13' wide. Its amazing when we watch 1:2.35 DVD movie in absolute dark; trust me quality is just fine with a panny AE900U. Someday I just need to shell big time for a good anamorphic lens but its not bad at all without it.
OH! back to the problem...where does the plasma go? May be I need to talk to Leno for what he has because I have a garage under the theater! Anyway, I can't afford that sort of professional installation.
