View Full Version : why are PS3 downloads soooo sloooow??
BrianEK 03-11-07, 04:31 AM I just bought a ps3 yesterday and have been downloading demos from the playstation store. I have ps3 wirelessly hooked up to my Linksys wrt54g router. First download was GTHD which was about 650mb and it downloaded in about an hour which was fine. Then the next morning I went to download demo of NBA 07 about 883mb and it took about 5 hrs!!!! After that I downloaded F1 racing demo and that took another couple hours. I have my xbox 360 hooked up (wired) to my router and I can download over a 1gb demo in about 30 mins. What gives? why is downloading from py ps3 so freaking slow when my pc (wireless) and xbox 360(wired) can download a billion times faster? Does it have to do with the online store or something?
talbain 03-11-07, 04:47 AM switch your router to "b only" mode (as opposed to g only or mixed) and see what happens...
Its cause I have 3 ps3's and you only have one.
Monty22001 03-11-07, 05:26 AM switch your router to "b only" mode (as opposed to g only or mixed) and see what happens...
If anything I'd set it to g only. Why go with the far slower b? Distance issues?
user7800 03-11-07, 11:20 AM Go here on PS3's browser and check the speed - http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Try reseting your router or unplug, and re-check.
Tripjammer 03-11-07, 11:26 AM Here is what you have to do to get good download speeds with the PS3..
Set your wireless router to G only! Do not set to mix mode or B mode.
Lock you speed on the wireless router to 54 MBPS.
You will now be able to download at full speed.
Do a speed test and you will get at least 4000 kps depending on your broadband connection.
Try it and you will like it.
Set to G only
Lock at 54!!!
Turn off SSID broadcast!
Get solid connectin and fast speed!
videora 03-11-07, 12:06 PM Wired will always run faster than wireless. Your wired connection is running at 100 Mbps while you wireless connection is running at either 54 Mbps (G) or 11Mbps (B). Also, wireless is much more prone to interference than wired which can further decrease speeds.
If you are able to connect your PS3 by wire, you should do that as it will give you the greatest speeds.
djpheer 03-11-07, 01:04 PM switch your router to "b only" mode (as opposed to g only or mixed) and see what happens...
This man holds your answer. It does not make sense, but it will make your wireless faster for your ps3. There is a long post on here about this.

trust me guys, the answer is b mode. we've been testing this for weeks now across many routers and this seems to be the solution for those with d/l issues. we have no idea why it works, and you're right, it makes no sense, but it works.
i would appreciate it if the op reports back here with his findings...
chrishicks 03-11-07, 04:09 PM in my Linksys WRT54GSV4 changing to B only did nothing. I unplugged the router afterwards and my d/l speeds didn't change one bit.
any ideas?
bdoyledimou 03-11-07, 04:46 PM I had the same issues.. my 2 wireless laptops download at speeds 500 times faster then the ps3 on wireless.
Once i switched to a wired connection for my ps3, it is still slower then my 360, but it is now running at about 1024kbps (about 1 mb per second)..
Downloads from the Sony Store are really slow! I'm on a wired connection and it took around an hour to download Flow, which is about 129megs! :(

Not entirely true. Wi-fi vs Lan 54 vs 100M does'nt matter unless you have a T-3 or fiber to your home. Wifi may be a lil slower due to interference and the converting the signal to the radio interface of the wifi router.. But most of the time the average person wont notice the difference in speed. To the OP. do a search..this topic has beaten do death since launch.
JamesMH 03-11-07, 09:35 PM in my Linksys WRT54GSV4 changing to B only did nothing. I unplugged the router afterwards and my d/l speeds didn't change one bit.

It did nothing, because it does nothing.
All Sony downloads are slow, no matter what your home network is setup for.
Do a speed test on the (junky) browser, it will be the speed your pc gets.
Wagon Man 03-11-07, 10:53 PM I bought a 50 ft Cat6 cable (for $20) :D
chrishicks 03-11-07, 11:28 PM well, if I do a speed test on any of my pcs in the house(wired or wireless I get right around this:
7400-8300kbps down 368kbps up(wireless on the low side of course)
on the PS3 however I get this:
1400kbps down 368kbps up.
the highest I ever got on my PS3 was around 1900kbps if I remember correctly. I have another post in the forum somewhere about it.
My PS3 is wired and the store download speeds blow.
Inspector Jihad 03-12-07, 08:42 AM sony needs to get some more servers up pronto
bassmonkeee 03-12-07, 09:29 AM Hmmmm.....The only thing I've ever downloaded from the store that was slow was the Casino Royale trailer--and that was at 5:30EST on the day it was put in the US store.
Everything else is pretty speedy. I haven't had a demo take more than 45 minutes to download (for the 800mb games) and most clock in under 30 minutes. I don't think it's just because I'm "lucky."

Do not do it...run it G only mode and lock the wireless router to 54 Mbit/s!
If you internet speed is greater than 6 Mbit/s then 802.11b is too slow!!!

timick1 03-12-07, 09:56 AM Setting my wireless router (Linksys 54GS) to 'B Only' made my downloads slower. I got 2,500 or so download speed. Setting it back to 'mixed' got me 4,000 or so. My Road Runner cable modem hardwired into my computer gets me 9,500. My Xbox downloads much faster than my PS3.
It got pretty annoying having to wait for 20-30 minutes for my PS3 to update to 1.54.

Lock your wireless router to 54 mbits/s then retest...you will get at least 7000 to 9000 download speeds...trust me...this is what i did...and i can download from the PS store a 800 MB file in 20 mins!!!
My connection is DSL at only 3500k down and 656k up..i am about to switch to cable to get more speed.
As you can see in this post I got excellent speeds running in G mode with the router set to 54mbits.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/printthread.php?t=809855&p=9911859
Also I did some experimenting with the MTU setting. Most of the time with the Sony Store a 1500mtu setting is fine and I get very fast downloads. Once or twice when they appeared to have a lot of network traffic I had to lower the MTU speed to about 1300 and then I got a very quick download.
aclerok 03-12-07, 11:53 AM I'm really in the boat that it doesn't matter how it's hooked up. The think they just don't have enough servers and/or bandwidth to match the demand. I've only been hooked up through a wired connection and sometimes it will be extremely slow while others I can download demos in 15 minutes.

This is what i am been trying to tell people...If you are wireless set it to G only, disable broadcast SSID and lock the wireless router to 54 mbits/sec....

Here is what I did:
depending on distance from main cable modem to ps3, I used two Linksys WRT54gs version 6. One is primary, and use to send wireless signal, the other is scondary and I hard wire it to PS3. I created a wireless bridge network (NOT WDS because it will cut signal in half). the cable modem and primary linkys router is 113 feet from secondary router and ps3! There is a "S" shape hallway through the kitchen to the computer room (primary router). I had to flash the secondary router with DD-WRT. risky but I did it. I download descent speed, GTHD in about 1 hr to 1:20 minutes. I get about 24-36mbs with no time outs or signal lost.

A better way is to get two Belkin N1 routers...set up one as a access point and plug this into the PS3 using the GigE port....Set the IP for the Belkin N1 access point to a IP address on the other Belkin N1 router...Plug your cable model or DSL modem into the other Belkin N1 router and set up this new wireless network as the following:
Disable Broadcast of SSID
Set WiressMode Switch to 802.11n only
Set Bandwidth to 40MHZ only

How do I lock my router at 54mbps? I entered my router settings (on my linksys router) and there is a selection for "Control TX Rate" and it is currently set to "auto", but I can select anything up to 54mbps. Is this what you are talking about? and what exactly is the benefit of "locking" the router at 54mbps? Is this going to effect any of my other devices when accessing the internet? Also, why would disabling SSID broadcast make my download speeds any faster? I know that nobody is stealing my internet connection, and I cannot think of any other reason this would make my connection faster other than making it less possible for someone to be mooching off of my internet connection.
redmption 03-12-07, 11:03 PM I just got mine tonight and noticed the update is taking forever to DL, is this normal? I am connected by wire. The PS3 apparently auto connected to my router because I didnt input any settings

If you read my post link above it goes into some detail about this 54mbits setting. On auto it was doing about half the download speed.
chrishicks 03-12-07, 11:32 PM another thing, my router and PS3 are in the same room(less than 15' apart) and my signal on the PS3 stays at a solid 100% for as long as I watch it.
I have tried every configuration stated in this thread except direct wire(maybe I'll buy a cable to test this weekend) and I can't get my speeds over 1900kbps down.
EDIT to fix typo.
Too many issues with Wifi alone to say either way.

PS3:
SSID always turned off
Mixed - 1711kbps down 369 up
B only - 2034kbps down 366 up
g only - 1561kbps down 366 up
g only locked at 54mbps - 979kbps down 370 up
my wired/wireless laptops always get atleast 7400kbps down so the above speeds stink.

oops. I definitely meant down.
tingham 03-12-07, 11:50 PM Did you try changing wireless channels? what channel are you using?
chrishicks 03-12-07, 11:53 PM channel 6 - 2.437GHz right now.
tingham 03-12-07, 11:53 PM Change it to channel 11 and see if that helps. Then test your speeds. You already confirmed "b" is faster.

thanks for this. my speed jumped to 2581kbps down by doing that.
tingham 03-13-07, 12:10 AM No problem. It will probably get better if you are getting 7 k down thru your isp. The psn is slow at times and it can be frustrating but most of the time it is acceptable. I am sure they will upgrade it in the future-and it is free. Firmware updates are the slowest downloads for me for some reason. I download most demo's, trailer's,etc in less than 30 minutes "wireless"....600mb files.

woohoo!! I just had a few peak over 3100kbps. I'm alot happier now. much better than before. thanks again.

ok, another update.
I have an AT&T Callvantage TA/router that was up until now installed in front of my Linksys WRT54GS. I finally figured out how to move it to behind my Linksys and there is a pretty big speed difference(my upload speeds are insane compared to before).
first off, my speeds when I do tests via my laptop(wireless) I get these speeds now:
B mode only - around 5000kbps down 2300kbps(compared to 370kbps up before  )
B mode only - PS3 is around 3100kbps down 2400kbps up(again compared to 369kbps up before)
now here is the kicker, before I removed the D-Link TA from in front of my Linksys wireless router my wired laptop did a 7700kbps down 370 up. after the move it registered speeds of over 16000kbps down 2400 up. I reran the test over 10 times and it was always in the same ballpark. that D-Link unit was killing my speed.
I did notice my speeds were slower on my wireless laptop unless they were always in that range and I just got everything mixed up(I have 3 laptops and sometimes they are wired and sometimes they aren't).
I'm now in the process of trying Mixed mode as well as G only for the PS3.
so far in mixed the speeds on the PS3 range from 2300-3300kbps down(I did have a fluke test that hit around 4200kbps but only once) while up stays a pretty solid 2400-2500kbps.
will keep updating as I go.
EDIT: I switched router over to G only and locked it at 54Mbps and got the following:
2150kbps down 2300kbps up.
switched router to G only but and changed transmission to auto and speeds increased to 2450kbps down and 2500kbps up.
B only is the only way I can get above 3000kbps down regularly so I'm sticking with that for now.

Worked best for me too.
B only - 2674kbps down 722 up, ~-40dB signal via Linksys WRT54GS.
Channel 11, NYC server, I'm in Buffalo.
Also- FYI- anybody having issues with signal strength that owns a laptop should look into Netstumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/) to tweak signal strength.
