View Full Version : F.E.A.R. delayed AGAIN
Naveed148 03-11-07, 10:09 PM I've bided my time, passed up the 360 to have the PS3 as my console of choice, and the one title I've been patiently awaiting since launch is pushed again. Moved from 3/13 to 4/17. it seems pretty underhanded for them to have touted it as a launch title (among other titles that didn't make the cut) knowing full well that it wasn't even close to completion. And this on top of GTHD, Warhawk, and other dead projects, really seems like they're sticking it to us. Guess I'm just venting here, but if it weren't for Blu-Ray I'd be in the store tomorrow trading my PS3 for brand X...
Mini123 03-11-07, 10:32 PM Get it for PC?
Naveed148 03-11-07, 10:34 PM I'm a mac user :) never really did get into PC gaming
I'm just the opposite, I can't ever see myself playing a FPS on a console. I hate the controller.

Just curious, but if you're so anxious for FEAR then what's stopping you from getting into PC games?
talbain 03-11-07, 11:25 PM i purposely held off getting the 360 version so i could pick it up for the ps3. luckily the 360 version's price has not gone down much to tempt me yet...
Don't be sad...it's not that good anyway...I played it on the 360.
Actually, I didn't finish it, yet.
I always seem to find other games I would rather play.
talbain 03-12-07, 12:17 AM i thought fear on the 360 was excellent. great graphics, great physics, nice weapons mix, good a.i., nice story, amazing surround sound, very creepy atmosphere...
yeah, i liked it a lot, start to finish. had to rent it twice to beat it, and then a 3rd time to check out multiplayer (which is good as well)

I agree- technically it is a well done game, but it just isn't making me want to play it. I am playing on the PC but as I just purchased Lost Planet I find myself going back to it more frequently.
I am not really enjoying the Fear storyline or it's brand of creepy. Maybe I am just not in the mood for a creepy FPS right now.

That's because there is no story to speak of. You shoot the same 4 character models over and over between appearances of the creepy little girl. Linear and repetitive to the extreme.
Naveed148 03-12-07, 01:08 AM seems like a consolation some of you didn't care for the game. maybe it isn't worth waiting for ...
I've never owned a PC. Always had a Mac. My wife has a PC laptop but we actually use that mostly for poker. I know some people swear by gaming with a mouse and keyboard, but its never appealed to me.
HeadRusch 03-12-07, 01:16 AM FEAR is one of the best FPS's out there for the PC because of its AI, and the satisfying way in which you can dispatch them...the havoc engine means you can blow guys away with reckless abandon and watch their bodyparts fly all over the place. The destructible environments and particle effects make the whole thing even cooler. Nothing better than engaging in a huyge firefight and watching the smoke and dust settle when its all over, with bullet holes and damage all over everything.
Yes, its the same 4 guys you keep mowing down..like...every other shooter. These guys are all part of an army so you'd expect them to look pretty similar, but they pack different weapons and they act in a fairly intelligent fashion, certainly some of the better AI on the PC side of things. The game has more than a few hair-raising spooky moments, and the ability to go into bullet-time to dispatch your enemies is also very cool, as are the real-world locals (that is, if you like warehouses) :)
To say that the game has no story is to stay that GRAW has no story or R6 has no story or any other FPS has no story. The story of your character and how you are tied into the whoe Akira-esque expands as you get deeper into the game, how you and that little girl are tied together.
I haven't played it on the Xbox, only the PC.....if you've never tried it, the PS3 version will be worth waiting for (hopefully).
TwinTurboZX 03-12-07, 01:39 AM I played it on PC a while back. The game has amazing AI, physics, graphics, sound, and weapons but the horror aspect of it was a total turn-off for me. It looks like these days a good solid game is not good enough, they always have to throw in some aliens, monsters, or some other crap to make it seem cool for the children.
When your entire game happens in small rooms, stairways, corridors, hallways, office space and roofs, it's easy to make the AI shine.
This game is a technical achievement in terms of graphics and visual effects, but you really can tell it was produced by the same guys who did Condemned. It's essentially the same linear sequence of small rooms, stairways, corridors, hallways, office space and roofs...with a different premise and advanced effects.
As I said, I have not finished the game because, to me, it's just a grind. I will try it again and hope it all gets better in last third of it.

Clearly not as there are plenty of games like that with crap AI.
This is the same game that was released on PC a year and a half ago. I don't see how anyone could still be anxiously awaiting this title on any platform.

Is it really that difficult a concept to grasp that not everyone likes to play games on their PCs?
I'm just the opposite, I can't ever see myself playing a FPS on a console. I hate the controller.
Same, except I've done it. Yes it feels like you have virtually no movement control and are stuck trying to spin around. Good thing is the PS3 will support wireless keyboard/mouse combos. In the future I'm going to try that out. It could make console FPS gaming a preferred choice!
HeadRusch 03-12-07, 12:09 PM When your entire game happens in small rooms, stairways, corridors, hallways, office space and roofs, it's easy to make the AI shine.
Yeah, but, thats every FPS, no? I can't think of a FPS that has computer controlled opponents that are really any better than the ones in FEAR, it makes the game satisfying. The speed of the game also means its more of a slow-burn than a lighting speed fragfest.....plus, the hand-to-hand element helps out now and then.

True, so I think we're seeing that you dont like confined spaces in your FPS's, you'd rather be on an open battlefield type of thing yes?
I can understand if FEAR isn't your game, but I really enjoyed duking it out in office buildings and cubicles and on rooftops. SURE, a little variety might have been nice, but we didn't get it so....you accept that the engine plays to these strength's. Although there were more than a few outdoor areas, it would have been nice to have had more street fighting......using more of a vertical element.
I remember really enjoying the rooftop levels where you had to take out enemies through windows.

So why were the enemies in Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey so stupid and predictable even on harder difficulties?
isaidme 03-12-07, 01:19 PM Ive been a big supporter of the PS3 hardware but I am also growing tired of the delays of games. Some of these games were said to be launch titles, this is standard practice for all the game consoles. I take a look at Motorstorm and wonder what about it needed to be delayed... the graphics are alittle better then average, very few tracks, and no 1080i. I think the problem is they are wasting too much time with online play, which should be secondary to single player/story/campains.
Bulk response, half the price:
- Even if other games have worse AI, it doesn't mean FEAR's AI is great. In this case, they cleverly designed their levels so that it appears that way. Heck, when the only option is to come through door A versus door B, it's not too difficult to guess what FEAR's AI is going to do. I could tell what would happen upon entering every level. The rule of thumb: If you are facing enemy fire, retreat 2 steps and wait for the AI to send troops from the other direction.
- Again, FEAR is a great technical achievement, but it adds nothing to the genre. You play this and you have the feeling you have played this a hundred times before. The time-slowing feature is just another interpretation of "bullet time" of old.
That's just my opinion. It's harsh because I have been playing way too many FPSes and I haven't seen anything new in that genre for many years.

Naveed, it will be worth the wait. Hold out a little longer or get the 360. ;)

There is no such thing as Revolution in FPS's, only Evolution.
Just remember with AI the only way to truly simulate human players is to have them bunny hop at you firing madly ad-nauseum, because thats how the average human player tackles FPS multiplayer.
Remember: When we have an FPS, we want the battle to be like the kind we see in the movies. Where people duck behind cover and the enemy just waits it out, where we can have these dramatic moments where we sneak around on a group of guys and blow them all away with one clip in an orgy of sparks and lead and bullet casings. Thats what makes a game "fun".
In a "real" FPS, you'd be walking out in the battlefield, and then you'd die when some guy with a rifle 300 yards away that you never saw killed you. You'd shoot about 300 rounds into a buildings windows and never find a body. YOu'd spend more time crapping your pants than you would looking through your weapons sights.
You'd never be a lone gunman going up against 100 guys in a building.....if they had "real good AI" they'd just sit tight and wait for you, or they'd rush your position from all sides at once, and you'd die.
This is why "real AI" in games is really supposed to mean "dont stand around like targets in a shooting gallery", but "Don't be smarter than the average bear" either.
FPS's are modern day shooting galleries.....the "how you do the shooting and the results of your accuracy" are what determines if a FPS is fun or not.
IMHO of course. Fear had some very satisfying drones to fight against...

Your analysis is very good.
My conclusion is that I have grown tired of "shooting galleries".
psychdoctor 03-12-07, 03:02 PM I am disappointed in the delay but here is how I look at it. It means the developers are hopefully getting the game right for release. I considered FEAR but am leaning on getting rainbow 6 vegas instead. I love RFOM, just a blast to play on line and coops are my favorite. I see the delay in all the games for PS3 as a GOOD sign not a BAD sign. It means the developers are trying to utilize the cell engines of PS3 to its fullest. Good games, I mean really good ones will come out fall 2008! But I will settle for brothers-n-arms and MG solid 4!

For what its worth, I've found to "Terrorist Hunts" in the newest Rainbow Six:Vegas title to be quite nerve-wracking.
Enemies are good shots, even on normal dififculty...if you go in alone against even the "low" number of 15 or so enemies, there's a good chance you'll die.
I've been picked off from across maps, I've been blown up, I've been flanked more times than I care to mention while waiting for that "Dumb AI guy to walk through the hallway I have scoped out".
In fact the only way I can consistantly survive is by finding a nook with no possible flanking opportunity and make sure my mags are full and pray I dont getover-run during a magazine change :P
Its a real step up from Fear thats for sure.....

Can you play coop in R6V? Not in FEAR? which would mean no split screen?

I just finished Vegas! :D
The end is rushed a little and the ending sucks. I don't want another cliffhanger and it won't make me buy the next one, even though Vegas was brilliant through and through.
Ubisoft is really getting into the habit of splitting their AAA titles in two or three in order to rake in thrice their $60.
I guess I can move on and try to finish FEAR now, unless MotorStorm drives me away from it.
try playing fear with surround sound in a small room with the lights off.
May not be the scariest game (that goes to xbox360 launch title Condemned.) but its still quite good.
Condemned was a damn scary game, the first two levels freaking scared the crap out of me
lacombo 03-13-07, 02:14 AM you know they had to make use of the six axis, that along with getting the online right is most likely what cause both delays.
Its always a shame when people try to blast something for no real or good reason. fps suck on consoles {WTFE}, just play it on PC {not everyone has a pc or plays such games on 1}...
I'm sure you'll be glowing by the end of the yr if you can afford all the holiday games LOL
I finished FEAR today.
The level called Revelation was better than the others because the entire storyline is packed into it. Yet, the big deal of a revelation in that chapter is a mountain out of an hill.
So, I maintain my initial rating 6.5/10. That score is in the context of nex-gen games. The game shines from a technical standpoint, but it's not fun or interesting. I had to force myself to finish it.
btf1980 03-15-07, 01:16 AM Condemned was a damn scary game, the first two levels freaking scared the crap out of me
I think the scariest level in Condemned was the Department store. Those mannequins!
HeadRusch 03-15-07, 08:52 AM Agreed, those Mannequins were a nice touch.."is that..a dude..is that...a........what was that crash!?!? (whip around to look behind you..turn back around)..wait..wasn't...weren' t there TWO mannequins there before!?!?!?" <WHACK> as you take a blow.....very well done.
And yeah I just happened to be playing that level around xmas time. With Condemned, I play like 1 level every quarter, I'm still not done with the game :D
Mobius_570 03-21-07, 01:26 PM Yup, pushed out one more time. Now it looks like it won't be here until 4/24.
God I love delays!
Naveed148 03-21-07, 11:05 PM Looks like they can make this thread a sticky Mobius....
