View Full Version : God of War II
ckenisell 03-12-07, 11:38 AM OK, I know there are other threads regarding this title, but I had a question regarding the screenshots found on playstation.com.
How is it possible that a 720x480 game can have screenshots that are 1224 x 1071? I can understand upscaling, but that's not what these screenshots look like.
Here are some examples:
http://fp.scea.com///Content/Movies/14547/Images/1/image.jpg
http://fp.scea.com///Content/Movies/14547/Images/2/image.jpg
http://fp.scea.com///Content/Movies/14547/Images/3/image.jpg
The reason I ask, is because these screenshots look fantastic, but I have never played a game (even at 480p) that looks as good as these on a PS2. There's absolutely NO way God of War II (a PS2 game) can look as good as those screenshots.
I played God of War I in progressive mode and it didn't come close to that. The PS2 inherently had "jaggies" and very bad aliasing problems. Even if GoWII is upconverted to 720p using the PS3, it won't look as good as those screenshots.
So, are these screenshots from the developers PC's and misleading or what?
IMO those look like PS2 screenshots to me. I mean the graphics do look good, but they are not that detailed, nothing I'd expect from a PS3 game.
Sure they might be not actual game play screenshots coming from a ps2, but I dont expect the games graphics to look much worse than that.
logicalnoise 03-12-07, 12:06 PM In order for rproper advertisments to be made high resul;tion images must be "made". The process for making a high resolution image based on a "low" resolution is done in a number of ways. The screen caps could be from a devkit rendering on specfic frame for a longer time. It could simply be a photoshopped upscale of a in game frame. Upscaling in photoshopp cqan be easy with the right tools.
JackBau3r 03-12-07, 01:04 PM Can we make this the official thread for GoW2?
Anyway, they're bullshot screens. AA is applied to those screens.
logicalnoise 03-12-07, 01:58 PM yeah here's my vote for official thread. Anyways anyone know if the game is shipping early for arrival tomarrow or is it like any other release where the game ships tomarrow and hopefully arrives Wensday?
kylebisme 03-12-07, 02:11 PM It could simply be a photoshopped upscale of a in game frame. Upscaling in photoshopp cqan be easy with the right tools.
You can't get results like that from upscaling with Photoshop or anything else. Those shots were rendered at and even higher resolution by a development kit and downscaled to what is posted here.

Unless a retailer screws up (which has been known to happen), all the big games 'ship' on tuesday and are in-stock on wednesday.

Nots not that unlikely many games pre ship for release on tuesdays Halo 2 for instance as well as FFXII. But I guess you answered my question.

nope, but commercials that only show CG are IMO.

remember this is a PS2 game... this will be the best looking PS2 game by far. of course to todays standards, it doesn't look great, but it still looks good.
if it doesn't look good to you, and if you're not impressed with the visuals considering this is a PS2 game, you must have VERY high standards. are you expecting nextgen graphics from the PS2?
as for the shots posted above, watching the videos and considering what GoW1 looked like, i'm guessing the actual game won't be far from those shots.
kylebisme 03-12-07, 09:24 PM if it doesn't look good to you, and if you're not impressed with the visuals considering this is a PS2 game, you much have VERY high standards.
Surely he is comparing the demo to those shots posted above. Compared to those shots, the graphics of every PS2 game massively sucks.
vilmer_ 03-12-07, 10:55 PM GoW 2 is basically bringing the power of the PS2 to it's knees. GoW 1 is a phenomenal game and I can't wait to give the second installment many hours of my time :)
HeadRusch 03-12-07, 11:37 PM Those shots have anti-aliasing applied, for one, I fully expect to see 480p jaggies on this game......
Granted, GoW looks just fine for a PS2 game, this game will be no different, but in no way shape or form are those screencaps from a 720x480 (or 640x480) game unless they've found a way to apply AA on the PS2.
Hasnt there already been a thread about this? I remember a thread on going on 1up but yeah, old news - they stage them.

No AA could make 480 line renderings look like that. Again, those shots are downsampled from an even higher rendering resolution.
HeadRusch 03-13-07, 12:42 AM Actually I think it can..if you take a really high AA like 8x or 16x you can definately polish a turd :)
I remember when AA became standardized the big debate was:
Run at a higher native resolution
or
Run at a lower resolution with AA turned on.
Six of one, half dozen of the other...problem being that once you get used to AA, it can be hard to live without it.
has anyone ordered this from amazon?
i am using amazon prime and it says my shipment arrival date is march 20th!! =(
i'm tempted to cancel it and try to pick it up tomorrow or wed, but i heard amazon is pretty fast with pre-orders

No quality AA or anything else is can make an image rendered at 480 lines and upscaled to over 1000 lines look that sharp. Besides, there is very obviously alaising in those shots, the near vertical lines of the pillars in the first shot being a notable example. Again, those shots are rendered at a higher resolution and downsampled to what is posted here.
I'm tempted to buy this, but it'll probably look like crap on my hdtv. Wish I kept my 30" sony wega.
the first GoW looks pretty good on both my 46" CRT HDTV and my 32" LCD HDTV.
logicalnoise 03-13-07, 09:02 AM it's amazing that people can only complain about doctored screenshots(which is a norm in last gen marketing). I mean honestly when we finally get to play the full game last thing people will be paying attention to is the bad AA and non-HD textures.

I disagree. Jaggies and aliased edges are WAY distracting. That's why I like the idea of HD gaming and why it bugs me when this blatently FALSE ADVERTISING takes place. These have to be renderings from a game developers machine. They are much too detailed.

Then don't buy the F'n game, easy as pie. Game companies always worn that screenshots may not represent actual gameplay. It says in the demos in the print ads and in the commercials. It's not morally right no but it hardly has anything to do with the actual game devs who work so hard on their game. If you played the demo ro play the full game and can't appreciate how well the GOW devs did at sqeezing the most out of ps2 then please just stick with genji(at least that looks HDpurty right?) and be done with this topic.

This is SO true. How many times did you get a ps2 or xbox game look at the package, only to play the game and notice that the game play looked nothing like the packaging?? There are some who are far more concerened with how a game will look than how it will play. You need look no further than all the people on the 1080p or nothing bandwagon. God of War 2 is a PS2 games anyone who is expecting more than PS2 graphics, is more worried about graphics than game play. It's A PS2 game the PS2 wasnt and never has been an HD game platform...dont expect HD graphics from a NON HD gameplatform...no matter WHAT the screen shots and packaging looks like..

Great NEWS Sony did annouce that There is a patch coming unfortunatly do the size and cost fo creating it they will be charging a meager 59.99 for it and it should be available some time late 2008. However it will be worth the wait because it will have a completly different story line!

I think you missed my point. I'll eventually buy this game. I finished GoW I and I plan to finish GoW II. I already know what the graphics will look like. My beef is that Sony is trying to pass off those images as "screenshots". I can understand posters, box art, etc. being higher-rez images (for print). But when they say "screenshots", how can they be any bigger than 720x480? It's misleading. I can't believe we, as consumers, have accepted this practice. I'm just glad that this sort of thing may be coming to an end with HD next-gen games.
I understand that gameplay is more important than graphics. I understand that the game developers did their best to make it look as good as possible. I understand all of those things. GoW was my favorite game for the PS2. I'm simply saying, don't mislead us with faulty screenshots that a PS2 or PS3 cannot reproduce. That's all.

Same. 2 loooooong hours. :(
JackBau3r 03-13-07, 04:40 PM GS will have the game between 7:30 and 8:00 tonight. I'll head to the mall and wait until then. Better do it now, because they might be sold out tommorrow. I'm so pumped for this game. I haven't bought a new game since December. Up next will be Splinter Cell 4.
cdhender 03-13-07, 04:42 PM I can't believe people would even think of passing on this game because it won't be in HD. this game is going to freaking rule!

JackBau3r 03-13-07, 06:02 PM I usually don't use Gamefaqs unless it's an rpg. I did have to use the site, because in the first game where you attach the crank to make Atlas lift the stone in the air, a glitch happened. I had to restart the game over. :(

It really depends on how badly it looks. If I were playing on my sdtv, I wouldn't even worry about it. FFXII was notoriously bad on my hd-tv, even after the "jaggies fix" for the ps3.
I'm rather wait until someone with a large screen hdtv posts screenshots.
tokerblue 03-13-07, 08:42 PM I going to pick up GoWII tomorrow, but can anyone confirm if the widescreen is a cropped widescreen? Unfortunately, the demo was...

logicalnoise 03-13-07, 08:57 PM so after 1.5 hours I;m still loving it. EVerything the first was and more. Great twist right after the first level. WE FINALLY KNOW WHO THE NARRATOR IS! Anyways I'm breaking for house then back into the fold. BTW the graphics in 480P are quite satisfying. Hardly any dips and some fantastic graphics(for ps2 of course).
picking it up tommorow, they called me today that its in.

The demo isn't, only the configuration screen bacground gets cropped but gameplay is proper widescreen.
alex2792 03-13-07, 11:38 PM Amazing game, so far the story is even better than the 1st and graphics look great on my PS3 with Panny plasma. The presentation is 2nd to none, it feels like a big budget blockbuster.

No truth to that at all. That was IGN doing their impression of the New York Times. Printing stuff that isnt true and not verified.
And I still cant believe people are "waiting to see what it looks like on a big screen" Im going to pick my copy up during my lunch hour.

tokerblue 03-14-07, 10:59 AM IGN retracted their 720p statement on the second page of the GoWII review. SCEA says 480p only. I'm still guessing it's a cropped fullscreen. I'll know tonight when I get my copy. :)

I highly reccomend you play the first game first. Honestly one of the best experiences out there. SO far GOW2 is just as great but without the first you have very little reason to like Kratos or even care what happens to him.
tbass2k 03-14-07, 11:22 AM This game is truly a masterpiece, I enjoyed the first one, but not like I'm enjoying this. Last night I kept saying I was gonna cut it off at the next save point, 3.5 hours later at 3 am, I finally stopped. They could of at least had 1 or 2 filler moments, but noooooooo, we're gonna make every moment spectacular. I haven't enjoyed a game this much since Resident Evil 4. These graphics and presentation are phenomonal, and definitely the best thing I have ever seen running on a ps2 engine. Anyone who owns a ps3 and passes this up because it's a ps2 game is on the crack pipe.
BTW, i am running the sound via hdmi to my onkyo receiver but the bass is seriously lacking, imo. Has anyone experienced this while playing ps2 games through hdmi? Any fix for this?

SolidMGSnake 03-14-07, 01:37 PM Yes the bass in this game is seriously lacking! The game does a very good job with filling the front and surround speakers though.. but jesus I'd think a game of this caliber would have the room shaking to hell. =( Oh well as long as everything else sounds great.
Ok gotta stop reading this thread until I get to play my copy...
Doug Schiller 03-14-07, 03:23 PM I haven't read any of the replies to the first post but I'll throw in my opinion.
I remember when Metal Gear Solid 3 was being developed, a magazine showed screen shots that rivalled almost anything you have seen on the Xbox 360.
I think these are shots from development boxes running at HD resolutions, they then scale down the game for actual release.
I think this is the same case.
ckenisell 03-14-07, 03:30 PM I agree Doug. Now, do you think that's misleading?

Did you guys go into the menus and change the sound options in-game? I didnt hear a big difference between stereo or surround (didnt with the first game either) but there was a noticeable bump in output in mono. But thats so... mono, you know?
My ps3 is outputting everything in PCM 7.1. I'm wondering if the sound is being handled the best possible for all ps2 games in general. I mean the surround options seem to have no effect at all.

Exactly, anyone playing this via optical sound on a PS3? If so, how is the bass? Anyone else experiencing PCM bass issues? Any settings in the PS3 to fix the bass or is this just how the game is? I can barely tell a difference when changing the game sound settings.
Krieger119 03-14-07, 05:41 PM Hey, quick question. I just picked mine up at Gamestop. Did any of you guys get the game without the security stickers? I haven't opened mine but seeing through the plastic I don't see the security stickers.

Yeah, with optical the game outputs two chanels and my reciver does PLII to it with the sub kicking just fine. I take it with HDMI surroundsound the PS3 output a multichannel signal but doesn't expand the two channels of PS2 games to surroundsound?
And no, there were no stickers under the plastic on my copy either.

Kaminari 03-14-07, 09:19 PM When firing up GOW2 on a PS3 does it automatically flip to 480p or do you need to switch a setting?
I am using an old Samsung DLP with the PS3 running through my 480p/720p/1080i input. The 480i/480p is a separate input. While its not a big deal, I would hate to go through the cable input shuffle game to get this thing running at 480p on the PS3.
Note I have never played a PS2 game on my PS3, so if this is something that is done all of the time, I don't know.
G-force 03-14-07, 09:20 PM I picked it up today. Cant play it until tonight after work. I did notice a typo in the manual though. X button to jump and X button to attack :p

I think it does it automatically, I just started playing ... I FOUND THE NAKED B!TCHES LMAO ... I was hoping they'd throw them in again lmao. Anyway, I must be too used to 1080i now cuz when this game first started, I was like,"ILL, wtf is this jaggie crap?" But I'm dealing with it ... love the game so far just like GoW1. And I'm using my PS3 through HDMI but I'm using optical cable for audio and the bass is very weak compared to games (and movies) I usually play. Not cool at all ... with this type of music you gotta have that serious bass kickin' in man ... take away a bit for me but oh well.
kylebisme 03-14-07, 10:07 PM The PS3 deinterlaces all 480i content when using an output that supports 480p, but enabling 480p lets youl bypass the interlacing and deinterlacing so you get a straight 480p output.
tbass2k 03-15-07, 12:35 AM I think it does it automatically, I just started playing ...
Yea, I don't understand what the deal is with the bass, it does suck, but that can take any points away from a masterpiece such as this.
I've never even play GoW1 before! Going to crack open GoW 2 tonight after the Suns vs Mavs game
that was almost exactly what i told my friend.
"play GoW2 after the suns vs mavs game"
and what a game it was!
Yeah, with optical the game outputs two chanels and my reciver does PLII to it with the sub kicking just fine. I take it with HDMI surroundsound the PS3 output a multichannel signal but doesn't expand the two channels of PS2 games to surroundsound?
I didnt notice any difference. I was not dissapointed with the surround sound (just not blown away by it either) I started the game Via HDMI to my 804. After my first lil battle I stoped and switch over to optical. The 804 switch to PLII, which allowed me to Add THX processing to it, but I didnt notice a change in the bass...I just turned up the gain on my sub..LOL With HDMI it was Multich PCM, I wasnt running the 804 in "direct mode" I had selected Surround, and the rear speakers and sub were on and working, Sub lacked bass no matter optical or HDMI. And the stereo vs surround option..didnt seem to change much either. That aside. Great game..everything I expected of it. The story is DEEP. It pulls you into it. My wife was watchin me play, and you'd have thought she was watching "The Departed" She was so into it as well.
Great game. And the Free T-shirt from Circuit City is Very nice. Kratos face on a black t-shirt...SWEET!! :D And the teaser on the Manual..God Of War for the PSP.. Soon... I can get my GOW fix on during my lunch break at work! I wonder what that story line is going to be about. I hope it's not just GOW2 on the PSP....
logicalnoise 03-15-07, 09:33 AM to finally answer the widescreen question yes it's real wide screen. I tested it last night and I saw no cropping taking place.
JackBau3r 03-15-07, 09:47 AM Then why doesn't my TV's screen stretch completely out when playing the game in WS? There are two black bars about 2 inches wide on each side. I don't recall that with the first GoW.

It seems that PS2 games have massive underscan. I have to increase the size of the display area every time I play a PS2 game (on PS2 or PS3) on my 50" projection TV. This is not a problem for PS3 games, Bluray discs, or TV.
tokerblue 03-15-07, 10:01 AM I'm guessing that GoWII isn't sending an anamorphic flag to the TV, just like the first GoW. You have to put your TV in "Full" mode.
warcrow 03-15-07, 11:06 AM Reporting in! Lets get this thread hope'n, guys!
Ok, so I got the game yesterday and (very excitingly) played the game for a few hours. I swear, I was sweating about 5 mins before I got home, clutching the game in my hands. I couldnt get home soon enough!
Anyway, here is my initial impression.
Let me just say that I adored the first GoW. I thought it was a marvelously contructed action game. It was about the closest thing to a flawless action game as they can come.
Well, I have to say -GoW2 just might be even better than the first one. Seriously.
Now, I could be jumping the gun here, totally! I've only put in a few hours into the game, so keep this in mind. But, my initial impression here is very very good. I mean, the game starts out with a HUGE bang. There is no beating around the bush here. There is no handholding. The action (seems) faster, more fun, and the game just all around tighter. Does that make sense? I don't want to give away anything, so I'm going to have to speak very generally -sorry. But there is only a slight flashback (at least as far as I've seen so far).
Also, I'm playing the game on my PS3 (via HDMI) and it's playing in 480P -not 720P. So, it appears that that was just a rumor. Also, I did pop it in to the PS2 and then my PS3 to see if there was a difference visually, and the quick answer is -only slightly. The actual visual fidelity is the same, but the PS3 suffers from some slight tearing here and there -but nothing really damaging. So, why, you ask? Why am I playing it on my PS3? Well, because of the wireless controller of course. :)
Doug Schiller 03-15-07, 11:12 AM I agree Doug. Now, do you think that's misleading?
Here is an example...

Tell me, have you ever seen MGS3 look like that on the PS2?

I'm stuck ... I'm at the part where Kratos finds that dude (don't know who he is ... Poseidon or one of the gods) that used to be a god and was chained so that the bird can eat him. Ok, hes dangling by the chain telling me that he has to burn in the fires of Olympus ... what do I do ... I went down to get the gorgen eye and I've tried jumping off that destroyed bridge lol I went up and can't seem to find anything there ... where do I go?
Go Mavs!!!!
Who? haha double OT lose! Best game of the year so far!
Anyway, I wasn't expecting a double OT so didn't get to play last night. What's everyone elses opinion, can I play GoW2 without ever have played GoW 1?

Not much of a spoiler, but just incase.
Try this (highlight):
Go back to where that old, wrecked bridge is, and you'll notice on the right hand side (your right, not Kratos's) there is a climable wall.

Of course you can ... I personally wouldn't want to ... unless you wanna play GoW2 and play GoW1 as a prequel lol ... GoW1's story was great, its not to be missed.
tokerblue 03-15-07, 11:31 AM What's everyone elses opinion, can I play GoW2 without ever have played GoW 1?
- You can... but you're missing out on a great game and story. GoW is readily available and very cheap. Personally, I don't think you should miss out. Is there any reason why you want to jump right into GoWII?

I'm happy to let you know that as of 6 hours in(second temple of the island) the actoion doesn;t let up. What I think really balances this game out is the bosses. Seriously every boss is fun challenging and rewarding(there's some great additions to kratos' armory in this game). The rumors of a short and ambigous ending have me worried but as fo now the journey seems far more entertaining than the end.
MaliciousBraham 03-15-07, 12:18 PM I'm at 9.5 hrs of playtime, saved at the pheonix ashes part, probably 80-85% of the way through the game (I base my percentages off the weapons / orb levels I have which worked well for the first game). The game is incredible, better than the first.
I dont know if its a ps3 controller thing, but icarus's wings have caused me more meaningless deaths than any game I've ever played. Very frustrating. Sometimes they deploy, sometimes they dont.
Anyone who can beat this game with zero deaths has accomplished something very major. That should for sure be a big ass trophy in HOME...
But the rest of the game is so super awesome I have no choice but to give the wings' crappiness a pass.
warcrow 03-15-07, 12:19 PM I'm really glad to hear that! I thought the game was designed, from the beginning, to be longer than the original. Hrm, maybe time cut the game shorter. I guess we'll see.
The thing is, though, 1 hour into the game I can already tell that I'm going to play this one again. I know, crazy. :P
JackBau3r 03-15-07, 01:54 PM Yeah. This game's art is AMAZING and so is the soundtrack. I kinda feel sorry for David Jaffe, lol. I mean, you RARELY see sequels that are better than the first game, especially when someone else is directing the game.

absolutely loving this game!
Although, I'm using a Westy 42" and I set it to progressive scan and widescreen, and use "fill" on the TV.. I'm still getting pretty thick bars on the left and right and also some thinner ones on top and bottom.
All my PS2 games leave these bars even when running widescreen and ps. Is this because I have a 1080p set?
Joe
Have you tried using the HDMI cable for sound? Do you get more bass from It?
I did....and I didnt.
I switched back and forth between the two. No improvement in bass one vs the other. If anything HDMI hurts here as the PS3 sends it as PCM 48k 3/2.1, which my reciever cant do any processing to. If I use Optical I can thrown in PLII and get stupid and throw THX on top of that..

- Sounds like your TV has a low overscan. Most PS2 games have a slight underscan to compensate for the overscan present in most TVs. Why waste processing power on an image most people will never see?
G-force 03-15-07, 03:28 PM I'm playing in progressive scan on a 42" plasma and am experiencing some strange horizontal scaling issues. For istance in certain areas as I move you'll see the image on the scree kind of just jump in horizontal lines down the screen. Hard to explain.
Suhnder 03-15-07, 04:06 PM That's happens because they turned Vsync off for a better framerate. What you're seeing is screen tearing.
G-force 03-15-07, 04:14 PM So then it's not just my set up? Everyone is seeing this? It's pretty distracting to me. I guess like others have said, I am spoiled now by the PS3.
It's a great game as expected, but I cant help but be bothered by the tearing.
Suhnder 03-15-07, 04:37 PM Yea it's the game's problem, not yours. A lot of console games have this actually, but I think its especially more visible in GoW (1 and 2) because of the bright graphics.
logicalnoise 03-15-07, 05:39 PM The tearing was near non existant on my LCD TV when I had widescreen off with it on it happens once in a while(like literally once an hour). I'm playing on a ps2 though.
I'll do it pulp fiction style and beat 2 first then go back and play one.

Kill all the guys and the passage resets... thats the hallway where one of the sisters is chanting something about kratos never making it to the temple...
I had athena's blades and atlas' quakes fully leveled up and those combos just decimated the baddies in that hall. Jump in the middle of a big group and either use L1+Square or Atlas' Quakes. Take as many out at the same time as possible.
JackBau3r 03-16-07, 02:37 PM I don't know about you guys, but some of the areas in the game looks just as good as the oversampled shots the OP posted in this thread. Very clean looking.
P.S. For the people that beat the game already, just tell me yes or no. Are there any FINAL boss fights in the sequel as hard as the one from previous game, like where you had to defend Krato's family from the clones? That had to be one of the hardest boss fights I've ever experienced.
Just a yes or no answer. :)
HD-Noob 03-16-07, 03:03 PM Someone please verify that God of War 2 will play on the PS3?
I just got back from EB-Games and the guy behind the counter told me that it won't and I would have to borrow a friend's PS2. So I didn't end up getting the game even though I was looking forward to playing it this weekend.
Thanks.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on this game...

logicalnoise 03-16-07, 03:54 PM Honestly never beileve a Word any EB or gamestop rep tells you. Conspiracy* 03-16-07, 04:10 PM If tearing is that horizontal line that rips thru the screen every now and then...then ya its pretty bad on my widescreen with progressive scan turned on. Its not horrible but enough to make you want to turn off the progressive.
As far as the OP was saying....I froze my screen during the same scenes as those pics in game and Im VERY impressed with ps2 graphics. Im guessing that on a 36" tube TV the game would do those screenshots justice.
The graphics at the isle of the fates and the horses of time or whatever are damn near HD quality backdrops and the lighting is WONDERFUL. Theres a part when you run from the horses back to the isle on a chain and when you're by the horses you can actually see and almost "feel" the radiant light shining back off the horses golden armor onto the screen. You get to a certain point running back and the screen fades back to a grey-blue color that is completely devoid of the radiant sunlight feeling...its a VERY dramatic difference to me.
Sunkist 03-16-07, 04:11 PM Even at 49.99 it is a steal for a great game. I was planning to wait until it went down in price but I am happy I didn't.

I've put 9 hours into it using my PS3 via HDMI and not a single issue. Not one. It looks absolutely stunning.
The onyl with worth mentioning (to some) is that there is some *slight* tearing in the imaging -but it's hardly noticable (to me!) and after 2 hours -it's practically gone.
tokerblue 03-16-07, 07:16 PM I didn't get to play GoWII as soon as I bought it. I was a little busy testing out the Virtua Stick High Grade. ;)
Here's the scoop on Widescreen vs. 4:3. The widescreen image is definitely cuts off some of the top and bottom of the image. But here's the interesting part. The 4:3 mode cuts of some of the sides of the widescreen image. So there isn't a "better" aspect ratio this time.
Here's the screenshots from the first level I just took. I combiined the two images. Now I have to decide which aspect ratio I prefer...
I confirm the game looks great on my PS3...and the Pegasus gameplay is not that bad at all, although I am only 2-3 hours into the game.

I'd go with widescreen. It looks like you're losing more of the image using 4:3 aspect.
tbass2k 03-17-07, 02:48 AM Ok yall, I'm 31 years old and have been gaming since i was 6. With that said, I have played pretty much all the great games that have come out for pretty much every system and this is without a doubt the greatest action game I have ever played. I'm a little over eight hours in but if it ended in another hour or so it would still be my #1 action game. My jaw was on the floor just now with the Icarus scenario. This is in my top five of all time now already along, with Resident Evil 4, Ocarina of Time, Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Collosus. It's hard to imagine this game being anymore ridiculous. This is the only game that I have EVER played where everytime I play, I have to force myself to stop or else I won't get any sleep, seriously, it is unfair to have wall to wall action and epic moments back to back like this game. I thought the first game was awesome, but a little too short and overrated, but this....oh my. Ok, I'm done, I wont go off anymore until I beat it....I hope.

Yeah, I have both progressive and widescreen turned on with my PS3, and the tearing is a bit obnoxious. I think I am going to break down and go and buy some component cables for my PS2 to see if it's any better with that and see what I'm missing without rumble. Besides--I haven't played Guitar Hero since I got my new TV and I really want to see it on the big screen. I'm tired of waiting for the adapter!

just played it for the first time last night! I ended up playing it for about 3 hours. Man what an impressive game. When I first loaded it, i though oh crap look at these horrible graphics, but after playing for about 5 minutes they appeared better to me for some reason.
I love it, its hard as hell and i love it.

Cambeast 03-18-07, 06:36 PM Ok yall, I'm 31 years old and have been gaming since i was 6. Ok, I'm done, I wont go off anymore until I beat it....I hope.
....im 14 and ill be 15 in 7.52 days...... ive been gaming since i was 4-5 i still remember playing on the Super Nintendo on the Mario/Goose hunter double cartrage..... i wasnt very good.....
Cambeast 03-18-07, 06:52 PM IMO those look like PS2 screenshots to me. I mean the graphics do look good, but they are not that detailed, nothing I'd expect from a PS3 game.
Sure they might be not actual game play screenshots coming from a ps2, but I dont expect the games graphics to look much worse than that.
I play GOWII on a PS2 + COBY TV-DVD 1350 13" Color TV with High Resolution DVD Player.... IT WONT SUPPORT PROGRESSIVE SCAN!!!!!! <:'(
What is Progressive Scan away?

***SPOILERS*** Don't know if you still need the help but if I remember correctly, to the left of the crank there is a break wall and behind wall there are 2 enemies and a statue you can use to freeze time after you pull the crank ... you do not need to rotate the crank all the way ... you need some time to get to the gate.

If you want to post something that people can selectively read you can use the spoiler feature. Just like quoting, bolding, or anything here just use the word spoiler with the proper bracketation.
Here is an example:
just a heads up
oldschool JAWA 03-19-07, 12:49 AM I just completed the game, WOW!!!! That was one heck of a ride. I loved the first one and I loved this one. I cannot wait until the 3rd one and it should look unbelievable since it's going to be made for the PS3.

yup yup, but .... Spoilers (highlight below to read)
I'm wondering how the 3rd is going to be. Is Kratos still going to control time? He climbs Mount Olympus along with the titans ... does the whole game take place on Mount Olympus? The ending to me just kind of narrows what they can do for the 3rd installment ... who knows, but I got faith in them ... 2 great games and it looks like the action is nowhere near letting up.
I played the entire game in one sitting yesterday from start to end in 10 hrs.
Man what a blast Game of the Year 2007 for me, it will be tough to top it.
Malcolm_B 03-19-07, 05:29 PM Hard to believe that the best game I've played on my PS3 is a PS2 game! God of War 2 is terrific!

Dumb question, i'm sure, but, why was this one not made for PS3?
Scotty L 03-19-07, 07:02 PM Dumb question, i'm sure, but, why was this one not made for PS3?
I asked the same thing a while back...
I'm guessing since the engine and the character models were already built for the PS2's hardware they wanted to keep production costs down. To me it would be a logical step for Sony to absorb the losses and make this for the PS3 instead so it would have a "killer app" but would do I know? :o
oldschool JAWA 03-19-07, 08:48 PM From what I understand they made it for ps2 because of the huge ps2 install base and they didn't want to piss off all the ps2 owners.
Johnsteph10 03-19-07, 09:58 PM As a PS2 game it will sell millions and millions...as a PS3 game...it wouldn't. Not even close.
Sony knew that would make a TON more money selling a PS2 game vs. a PS3 game.
ckenisell 03-19-07, 10:00 PM BUT, God of War III will be a PS3 game. That's the one that I'm most excited about. Too bad it will take years to see the light of day.

I take it you don't use the white theme for AVS. With those colors you're actually highlighting your "spoiler". Use the spoiler tag to do it properly (forum software intelligently blanks out the text by making a block with text and bg color set the same).
ckenisell 03-20-07, 03:25 PM Ah, that's why they think they're using spoilers. I use the white theme too.
God, I hate the part where you have that pole/tower on a timer and you must spin jump from pole to pole to exit the room.
I have done 100 times and I still can't get it right.
Very frustrating.

Just wait there's a few more frustrating parts ahead:
The evator with spikes and the fn skeleton warriors made me almost break my controller(haven't almost done that for a year and half now).
DaGamePimp 03-22-07, 12:23 AM I am at the final part and I think that the timing is so critical on the last button press that the BT PS3 controller is not allowing me to finish this dang game .
* Well it finally worked and I was able to finish the game after about 20 tries on the last battle ;) *

You know it will be totally awesome when GOWIII comes out on the PS3!
Just think, they will be able to do things on the PS3 by 2009 that will boggle the mind...Hell Heavenly Sword already boggles my mind and that biotch is comming out maybe this christmas!!!
Plus if they can make GOWIII have online PS home battles....

OMG, I thought the same thing after untold times...really hate that type of gameplay.
Probably because the older I get the worse the eye-to-hand reaction time...
Here are the black bars on the sides of my TV that I get when playing GoW2 on my PS3:
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/6396/gow2gs2.jpg
My TV is a Samsung 4692 LCD (1366x768) 720p LCD TV.
However, since GoW2 can only output 720x480, its not filling up my entire 1366x768 pixel TV screen.
No big deal, really. The game has so much non-stop action I can't complain.
Sunkist 03-23-07, 08:07 PM PS2 games have black bars around them to compensate for overscan, I used to see them on my plasma but on my DLP I don't anymore.

Only 20? I was at this point for over an hour...
Kratos' words about being put out of 'this torture that is my life' had an entirely ironic meaning to me by the time I got it...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone ever finds an answer to the 'black bars' from PS2 games I'd be ecstatic to find out. I am hoping an evcentual PS3 update will address it somehow...

DaGamePimp 03-24-07, 06:10 AM You beat the entire game in 10 hours? Wow.

I beat it in under 10 hours (3 sittings of about 3 hours each) and had all my weapons maxed out on the default difficulty . I think the dev saying it was almost twice as long as the first GoW is a bit of a stretch .
This game is certainly one of the best games that I have ever played but it does not top RE4 IMO .

tokerblue 03-25-07, 05:24 PM I just finished the game the other day too. I think I clocked in at about 12 hours. It definitely seems a little shorter than the original GoW, but I'm also thinking that it's because the gameplay hasn't drastically changed, so it's "easier" due to my previous experience.
It was a great experience all around and definitely the best game I've played this year. I just finished watching the bonus DVD and there is some really great stuff in there.
I only have a few gripes. :)
1. Screen tearing is very annoying. It seems worse than the first game, but I haven't played that in quite a while.
2. CG movies are cropped in widescreen mode.
3. Enemy AI doesn't improve on more difficult levels, they simply do more damage. It was the same in the first game, but I was hoping they would actually implement better AI and enemy tactics.
Josh2160p 03-25-07, 05:34 PM Definitely one of the best games I've ever played. I enjoy playing it on my PS3 with the progressive scan setting on. I also have a 360 with Gears of War, Lost Planet and many more, but I have enjoyed GOD OF WAR much more. Can't wait for a PS3 version.

Could someone please explain why PS2 games (played on the PS2 or on the PS3) have that black border? I'm really worried about it causing burn-in on my 42" Panasonic HDTV. I've tried everything and nothing gets rid of them. I have the exact borders you see in Nsegative's picture. They're there in widescreen mode, 4:3 mode, no matter what they're there. Any way to get rid of them?
And to those of you playing without rumble -- you're definitely missing something great. It really adds to an already amazing game. I played the first few hours on my boyfriend's PS3 and then moved it over to my PS2 and haven't gone back. For a game like God of War II, you almost need to feel that rumble as one of those huge bosses stomps the ground or Kratos whips his swords.
Back to the topic -- Could anyone tell me if there's a way to get rid of that black border? It's really annoying. To me it's much more annoying than the screen-tear. If you can't get rid of it is there a way to decrease the chances of it wrecking the image on the TV over time?

- What you’re seeing is underscan. Developers typically underscan games in order to compensate for the overscan present in most TVs. So those black borders are intentional. Why waste processing power on an image that 99% of the people out will never see? Your TV has a low overscan, which is why you’re seeing the black bars.
If you set your contrast levels correctly, the risk of burn in on a plasma should be at a minimum.

- You would have to adjust the overscan on your TV somehow, probably through the service menu. But you should note that the underscan can be different between individual PS2 games, not even mentioning different systems.

On your number 3. I always considered GOW's battle system as an extension of it's puzzle system. Each one has certian attacks that are viable and discovering it is the main diffiuclty and then later when there's more the trick is managing all of them and delivering the proper attacks to take all of them out. With 8 enemies on the screen their AI isn't going to matter much when your attacks can take up half the screen(R1+square). BTW the anubis warriors were difficult enough to deal with.
ckenisell 03-29-07, 09:40 AM I didn't think that fixed-pixel displays (such as plasmas) had overscan.

I wouldn't worry about it, I played many many PS2 games on my plasma for hours on end and they never burned in, not even image retention so as long as your TV is calibrated right ( low contrast) it should not be a problem. I am not missing rumble much at all in GoW2 really, infact I almost completely forgot about it except when I play Shadow of the Colossus and remember that it tells you when to stab the giants. I like having the lighter controller instead. Plus my subwoofer does all the shaking for me anyway.

I don't really miss rumble either. When I first read that the Sixaxis wouldn't have it, I was disappointed. After I got my PS3, it was a couple of weeks before I even gave it any thought.

I'm not saying you're lying, but that's highly unlikely. Your game time may have been 10 hours, but it's hard to believe you didn't have any trouble on some of the parts and waste 2 or 3 hours. If you played with a guide then I could understand.
Sunkist 03-29-07, 12:01 PM I could see this game not taking very long actually, I had many more tough spots with the first one then with this one. Since I have fought all of these enemies before I rarely have gotten stuck, just on the first level getting used to the controls again and fighting the medusa took a little time. If you play the first one then you know how to deal with most of the obstacles so you can sail through many parts but if this is your first time playing God of War it could take quite a while.
You beat the entire game in 10 hours? Wow.
Were you playing on Easy?
No default (Spartan)
Going through on Titan I'm at the 10 hr mark again and just defeated
Euryale
Very difficult but I know I can beat it with persistence.

- My play time was around 12 hours and I like to look for every nook and cranny. I didn't use the guide or walkthrough either. I'm guessing DaGamePimp found the same thing I did while playing GoW II. The puzzles were fairly easy and intuitive and the combat has remained largely the same. So with the experience of the first GoW, it was easy to go through the game.
Not saying that we found every secret, but the difficulty in GoW isn't very high. I mentioned it in a previous post, but even at higher levels, the enemies simply do more damage, they don't change tactics.
I beat it in 12 hours the first sitting.
Now that I know the puzzles and all that. The monster tactics are cake
dismount rider from cyclops before attacking otherwise to much smartyness in the cyclops to do much damage
and all my orbs I use it to power the blades of athenas QUICKLY. Then the Crono's rage. After that easy. That and L1 is your best friend through out the harder settings ;)
The game is too short, i love this game, i want more of it !
Getting closer in Titan, just got past
The part were you jump across all the breaking pillars
That part is sweet.
w00t! Just beat Titan mode last night. :D

Lucky bastige!
I've played Titan difficulty since opening the game, and I'm just now getting to the Sister's of fate mega battle. So many deaths... :(
Soon, I will conquer Zeus!
Yeah me too I ended with like 374 deaths or something ridiculous like that.
Although sometime I let myself get killed or jump into lava or off a cliff to punish Kratos for not blocking when I told him to.
vilmer_ 04-02-07, 04:44 PM Does anyone have any tips for Theseus on Titan Mode? This is getting absolutely ridiculous... Everything would be fine if it wasn't for the one-hit kill glacier spikes arggggghh.

When you see Theseus running away from you toward the upper corners, you know he's doing the glacier attack. So just quick-roll (using the R3 analog stick) towards the opposite corner away from him. As soon as the glaciers go away, he charges you, so just hold block, let him stab you, and counter him with a quick combo.

A friend and I have been trying for 3 days now with this bast*rd. We have been able to get him to the roof now with relative ease, but it is then with the Minotaurs that the frustration meter rises 100 fold! I guess we'll just have to keep working at it, and hope for a little luck on the way!

You're good. I switched to easy during the Theseus fight. It was pissing me off way too much.
Even now, I am still stuck at the jumping from column to column thingy. That drives me crazy too.
The game is still great, though.

Yes they were,My Tip for the first half of that fight is to counter at the end of his 3 hit combo and instantly hit him with a heavy knockdown counter, then use the L1+O attack on him as he is on the ground, you will be able to land the entire combo before he gets back up.That can help the first half of the fight go much faster on multiple tries.
On the minotaur part, try to use the icebergs to your advantage by keeping your distance form them and the minotaurs and using ranged multiple hit attacks with the ability to block fast,If you can lead the minotaurs into the ice they were get knocked down which lets you get some easy hits, and obviously it goes without saying to use the CS attack on them for the easy kill and the health it gives.
vilmer_ 04-05-07, 10:44 AM I finally beat him LOL! It just came down to being patient and not panicking... The square, square, triangle combo on the Minotaur's really helped as well as a little luck with the iceberg attacks and rage of the Titan's meter :)
ckenisell 04-05-07, 10:46 AM OK, Seems like I'm going to have to unsubscribe to this thread. No spoiler tags sucks.
Sunkist 04-05-07, 10:53 AM Finished the game last night, geez the last sequence of buttons at the end was a pain!
kurtkbee 04-05-07, 01:17 PM It is as entertaining as i expected .... however whoever designed the puzzle with the horses should have their thumbs cut off so that they NEVER design something like this again !!
I am so stuck at that stage and i really want to just pass that, and what the hell is up with these games these days....were are the cheat codes !
:( well i guess i will have to put this down for now since i am starting to sound like that old woman on youtube that was playing RFOM.

Ummmmm............... Action Replay, Gameshark...............
tokerblue 04-05-07, 07:14 PM What part did you get stuck on with the Steeds? I can't think of any puzzle on that level that was remotely difficult.
The steeds part that was difficult for me, at first, was the flipping switch, and then running off to the sides to activate the glowing orbs on the horses. I had no idea I had to run-swing off to the sides to activate the orbs.
I actually found a video walkthrough for that part of the game. The rest I found out through trial and error. I finally finished God Mode today. :)

My thumbs are not working properly !!! i cannot get the steeds to start running, i guess i have no hand eye coordination since i cannot move the l3 stick in the right direction.
and gameshark does not help since i like the enjoyment of playing the game i just hate this puzzle and wish i could skip trying to get the damn ponies to move.
Likecoiledsteel 04-06-07, 06:41 PM Has anyone beaten the Challenge of the Titans? I am on the last challenge and cannot beat it. Thanks
Steel
Alright. This thread has convinced me.
I was only going to pick up Dragon's Lair this weekend. Now I have added God of War 1 to the list.
Has anyone beaten the Challenge of the Titans? I am on the last challenge and cannot beat it. Thanks

Yes, save the rock guy for the end by staying far away from him.
1. Blade of Olympus level 3 and Chronos Rage are a good combination.
2. Get good at blocking.
3. Spam the crap out of O on the little dual axe guys if you are having trouble because during the animation you are invincible.
Once everybody has been killed take on the rock guy, stay close to force him to do he easily dodgeable arm swing attack. Just roll out when he does it, pop off a few Chronos Rages roll in /\, /\, /\ with the sword. soon he will be out for the count.
Protopet 04-17-07, 04:32 PM The Island of Rhodes site says "God of War Chains o." What do you guys think the title will be for the next game? What platform will it be on?
My guess-Chains of Glory/Revenge
For PSP

What level was that? I didn't find it really easy, if you haven't played these type of games in a while or don't pay attention to some details you can easily miss switches and etc. I do remember getting stuck in a few places for a while because of some door or movable object I missed.

- That's good advice, but I found defeating the minotaur first to be a lot easier than trying to avoid him.
I basically used the Blades of Olympus level 3 and Chronos' Rage too. I ran behind the minotaur right away and drop 3 Rages. After that I hit a quick combo and rolled away before he starts spinning. Drop a few more Rages if needed or hit another quick combo on the minotaur. You should then be able to use the button death sequence on him. The skeletons should be cake.
From there, when you see a High Priest, drop a few Rages and then either hit him with a combo or grab him and get rid of him. The Beast Lords should then be easy. You can soften them up with Rages and make sure to take advantage of the invincible throw animation by grabbing them when possible.
No bonus for using magic, but you should still get Titan rank easily!
Pikasauce 05-07-07, 12:45 PM I took everyone's advice and purchased Gof of War 1 before getting GOWII. I am about 90% done and this game truly is a masterpiece; it could be the best game I've ever played. I don't even care that's it's a PS2 game as gameplay, storyline, and puzzles know no resolution. I can't wait to complete it and then purchase GOWII and then the rumored GOWIII in HD for the PS3 which could be unreal.
Thanks for all the great advice.
tokerblue 05-07-07, 07:06 PM Great news. It's always nice when you get to "experience" a well crafted game.
FenixP3D 08-13-07, 01:50 PM that's why i have both... and played through both of them... the second time around is always less frustrating despite being harder....
