View Full Version : HD1000U woes
Mazeroth 03-12-07, 02:44 PM I was all ready to pull the trigger this morning on the HD1000U when I decided I should determine if it will work well in my basement theater room. The ceilings are low at 6'8" and after plugging the data into Mistubishi's projector calculator I think I'm in trouble. Here are the results:
With the projector mouted 4" from the ceiling I get, for a 92" 16:9 screen:
Bottom of screen = 13.3" from ground
Top of screen = 58.4" from ground
Lens to screen = 131.8"
My room is 10.5x18 and seating distance will be around 14' away. The larger the screen I go, the closer to the ground the screen becomes. 92" is plenty big for this narrow room and I don't want to go any lower.
I was drawn to this projector for the price to performance ration. I can also get it delivered to my door for $850, which is outstanding.
With that, is there another comparable projector that's also inexpensive (I'm still a young gun) that would allow me to not have to keystone my image?
Thanks!
stonecreekHT 03-12-07, 02:54 PM Just tilt the projector up slightly. The bottom of the image may be 1" larger that the top no one will notice but you
Mazeroth 03-12-07, 02:57 PM I was going to construct a screen which I wanted to be filled 100% by the projector. If I tilt it up that will kind of wash that dream away! :D How bad do you guys think it will be?
mbennum 03-12-07, 03:17 PM Would it help if you tilt the screen slightly down? (top a couple inches further away from the wall than the bottom?)
nomad139 03-12-07, 03:36 PM I have mine tilted a bit & I don't even notice it -- it shows as less than 1/2" over the span of more than 4 feet. Works & looks wonderful.
wayneunit 03-12-07, 03:41 PM Mazeroth - I have a Mitsubishi HC3000 that has the same offset and I also have an 80" ceiling (due to ductwork). I also had the same worries as you do and that's why I bought an open box special at BB! As was suggested above, I have the rear of the projector hanging 1/2" lower than the front and the resulting net offset wasn't bad at all! I ended up having to keystone only 3 "notches" and the resulting picture fills my 81" screen perfectly and looks excellent! My measurements are as follows:
With the projector mounted 3" from the ceiling I get, for a 81" 16:9 screen:
Bottom of screen = 37.0" from ground
Top of screen = 76.5" from ground
Lens to screen = 143.0"
Therefore, I'd say go for it! You could always return it if needed.
Mazeroth 03-12-07, 03:53 PM Alrighty, you guys talked me into it! Going to call right now and order it.
Thanks!

I bet you are calling projectorpeople.com, for $850 shipped that is amazing

Jim McC 03-12-07, 07:44 PM My ceiling is also 6'8" tall and I have a 106" diagonal screen. I use 4 clicks of keystone and there is NO difference in image quality.
mindgam3 03-12-07, 07:48 PM People make way too big a deal about keystoning. It is not noticable on real life viewing materials. Test patterns sure but who watches those?
I agree that keystone is not noticeable on HD1000u (I have one) on movies/TV. On text (PC only, scrolling credits and opening credits are not significantly degraded) and test patterns, mild blurring is noted.
Mazeroth 03-12-07, 11:24 PM Ordered it a few hours ago. Now I just need to figure out which mount to get? Any ideas for a guy on a budget? I was looking at the two from Monoprice but I'm not so sure they're going to work in my situation. Don't laugh, but in my theater in the basement there are the 8" floor joists (renting a townhouse) and we covered them with some fabric from Jo-Anns that actually looks really good. I was going to mount the projector mount to the floor boards to allow the HD1000U to be as close to the ceiling as possible. I'd like a mount that has a good height adjustment. Any ideas? Worst case I could mount some wood under the floor to accomodate for the height difference and go from there.
Thanks!
Jim McC 03-13-07, 02:31 AM I made my mount for about $15. I used "Monkey_Man"'s plan(except I used a scrap piece of MDF instead of plexiglass). Don't mount it to floor boards. In my basement, I screwed a 2X6 between the joists(perpendicular to joists) and the flange for mount screws to that.

StormyQ 03-13-07, 06:26 PM Now I just need to figure out which mount to get? Any ideas for a guy on a budget?A lot of HD1000 people are using either the NPL or PMS mount from http://www.mountdirect.com/ . I have not ordered my yet but will do so as soon as I figure out which one works best for my situation. Only a tad more than the other one you mentioned.
StormyQ 03-13-07, 06:34 PM still a 16 dollar shipping charge, what about that?Call and speak to one of the sales reps. I dealt with Rich Morgan (very good) and he might be able to help you there. ;)

i called PP also but i was quoted $865 Shipped ...And i was thinking on grabbing the $99 warintee so the two bubs come in handy in the future.
imblind 03-13-07, 06:42 PM hm, the other guy said 850 shipped, i'll give them a call see what they say
Jeradin 03-13-07, 07:41 PM I ordered the NPL from http://www.mountdirect.com/NPL_Projector_Mount_p/npl.htm ($54.98 shipped), its like 2 dollars cheaper if you buy it from their ebay store ( price is less, but shipping is more).
All I read about it seems really good, it hides the wires in the pipe is the main reason I ordered it.
I did find another mount on Ebay that is made by hand, all the peoples feedback on it are great, and its really really cheap.... really close to the ceiling also. Go to ebay and look up item number 220091363479. It lists working with HD1000. Read the feedback the seller also.
Also the monoprice mount is affordable Monoprice mount (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082803&p_id=3009&seq=1&format=2&style=), and monoprice itself is a great company to work with.

You must tell P People that you are AVS member to get that 850 shipped. I didn't know about it when I ordered mine, and P People won't ask you if you are AVS member to give you a better deal. End up I ordered from theP Place, 864 shipped. I am in CA, so it was 2 days shipping for me direct from Mitsubishi.
gljgreenwald 03-14-07, 08:44 AM I just got the HD1000U as well. My ceiling is 7ft 3in and I was concerned about the height of the image on the wall. I bought a Chief RPA mount (which is more pricy) but provided the lowest clearance I could find (2.5in to the top of the projector). I also tilted the projector slightly up. I didn't even need to keystone to correct the image.
jrwhite 03-14-07, 02:25 PM Just as a test, I moved my HD1000 to mid vertical screen position on a 92" screen. I think I used about 14 clicks of vertical correction. Watching PBS-HD, ( abeit briefly ), there was no apparent image degradation. A pattern, or computer feed would undoubetly be another story, but I was amazed at how much keystoning could be used without artifacts jumping out at you when watching regular HD video material
YMMV - do not try this at home!
