View Full Version : Wal mart sales of HD DVD
arctictropical 03-12-07, 06:04 PM For the past 4 months I have frequented our local Walmart in hopes that they would begin stocking HD DVD. Up until now they have had neither format. However, today I noticed a sign that said "HD DVD coming". There was no mention of Blu ray. I just wonder what others are seeing at their local Wal marts.
thewretched22 03-12-07, 06:14 PM When i first noticed that my Walmart had titles for both formats i was very excited. However now im disappointed. Walmart has 3 shelves of BD's and is constantly getting in new releases. Their HD DVD section on the other hand is one shelf of titles that are mostly over 5 months old.
theforce8686 03-12-07, 06:21 PM The 3 Walmarts in the Daytona BEach Florida Area have about 85% BD and about 15% HD with the HD titles being Tomb Raider, WTC, Fast and Furious, and the occasional New Release (Babel or Departed)
My walmart has BD only but only three titles. X-3 , Monster House & Click
The WM in Lewisville, TX carries both... Not much selection though... maybe 7-10 of each.
My local Wal-Mart, seems to have just got in a first generation HD-DVD player, and they have it on close out at $450, and still no HD-DVD or BD disks.
I did notice they had a 13 inch CRT SDTV with ATSC tuner for $50.
Bob Black 03-12-07, 09:41 PM My Wal-Marts had both formats months ago. Now, it seems, they have about half-a-dozen new releases and little else. It boggles my mind how the stores expect to sell software by carrying under 10 titles -- who in their right mind would buy them there when you can't depend on them to have anything in stock?
I was actually in one of their superstores today in Amherst, NH, and they had 0 HD-DVD's and about 4 BD titles. I asked the salesman in electronics if they carry HD-DVD and he said they had a few copies but must have sold them. Both formats were relegated to a tiny wire rack on the side of the DVD aisle. Absolutely pathetic! Why carry any of them at all if that is their philosophy?
Mr. Cinema 03-12-07, 09:44 PM Mine carried both formats early on with a nice big selection. Now, it's dwindled down to about 3 titles on each format. Pathetic.
darinp2 03-12-07, 09:46 PM Both formats were relegated to a tiny wire rack on the side of the DVD aisle. Absolutely pathetic! Why carry any of them at all if that is their philosophy? My guess is that they tried this and they didn't sell as well as expected. I don't blame them for that.

eXstasie 03-12-07, 09:51 PM Every walmart I've been in the Toronto Area supply both HD formats...however they all seem like the Blu-Ray is marginally bigger than HD DVD... 60/40 it seems.
Last time i checked, they had decent amount of titles (like 15-20) but didn't find much newer stuff. And the prices varied greatly from Best Buy/Amazon prices. Some were $10 more while others were like $10 less...
Alan Gordon 03-12-07, 10:02 PM My local Wal-Mart (or closest one anyway) in Albany, GA doesn't carry HD DVD or Blu-Ray... though they had about 30-40 copies of "X-Men: The Last Stand" on Blu-Ray the night before the PS3 release. Since then, I've seen no sign of either high-def format.
My local Target carries both, but hasn't had a new title since December.
My local Circuit City carried Blu-Ray since it debuted, but added HD DVD late last year. They've relegated the HD DVD releases to by the video games, but have in the last month or two moved some of the more popular titles to the TV section with the Blu-Ray discs. While they have more stock of Blu-Ray titles than HD DVD (4 to six times more), I was surprised to see them out of "Crank" on Blu-Ray when I went to pick it up after seeing in Circuit City's flyer for $24.99 (cheaper than Amazon).
So far, no indication of any format selling better than the other at any location as I've never seen one person buy a disc, and only one person buy a player (Blu-Ray).

I have 2 in my area (west Atl), neither has a single hidef stand alone player or disc of either format...dvd still rules, many people just may NEVER advance, totally content with their new widescreen tv's, widescreen SD DVD's and basic surround setup...thats not a bad thing in any way, in fact, that IS good enough *HT* for most. =)
heavyharmonies 03-12-07, 10:11 PM Wal-Mart's stocking of both formats is *EXTREMELY* variable by geographic region and economic scale of the area.
All 3 Wal-Marts in my area have pulled back severely in the stocking of both formats, and linger 2-4 weeks behind release dates for new titles, if they stock them at all...
MidnightWatcher 03-12-07, 10:34 PM At my local Walmart they had a significant amount of both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles.

This sounds exactly like my local Target. They are always getting BD new releases but haven't gotten any of the new HD DVD released since Christmas. The HD DVD section is continually getting smaller and smaller without any new stock to replenish it. I know the store employees can't be trusted for information but, I asked one if they were going to get any of the new release HD DVDs and she said she didn't think so. I don't know what that means but maybe my Target is fading HD DVD out. It sucks because I'm in that Target once a week because my wife and I do our grocery shopping there. I'm always hoping to sneak an HD DVD into the cart but there is never anything new.
talbain 03-12-07, 11:38 PM none of my walmarts in north jersey have anything. i confronted a clerk about this the other day, pointing out that they sell both the ps3 and the hd dvd add on for the 360. he had no idea why this was the case, but cited space concerns...
LAGOSIAN 03-13-07, 12:52 AM My Walmart stocks both equally. However the HD DVD movies seem to always be sold out, Now if I didn't go in there quite often, I too would be of the opinion that they didn't carry enough HD DVDs. But to the contrary they can't seem to keep them in stock. :)
toxic_avenger 03-13-07, 02:57 AM My local Walmart used to have both HD and BR but they got rid of all but 2 BR movies. They never had a great selection but it was decent.
hamsterxcore 03-13-07, 03:15 AM both wal marts in my area are stocked about equally. one has about two different movies on either format at any given time (as in, two individual discs) and the other has a small selection, usually no more than 10 titles per format with a couple of each movie.

The Walmart here in Houston on Westheimer & Kirkwood has HD-DVD's I didn't even look to see if they carry BluRay. :D

Maybe they just carry them based on the actual sales ratio with DVD. BD and HD-DVD combined have less than a .5% market share when lumped in with DVD. Maybe Wal-Mart is buying hi-def discs in quantities equal to .5% of the volume of DVD's they carry in stores. If you have a big store with 5000 DVD's, they would have 25 hi-def discs, split across two formats.
rwestley 03-13-07, 08:57 AM They just opened two new Super Walmarts on Long Island and they don't carry either format. I think Walmart is waiting for a low priced HD player before they really get aboard.
They are interested in volume sales.
nick1091 03-13-07, 09:51 AM The two Wal-Marts closest to me have nothing, save 1 copy of X3 on BR in the glass with their PS3 games.
The Super Wal-Mart a half hour away where I do my grocery shopping has about a dozen titles of both formats combined, but the number per format varies week to week. Usually pretty even, but I've seen as much as 9 HD-DVDs to 3 Blu Rays.
One thing I've learned is that if I'm interested in a certain disc, I better buy it that week, because it always seems to be gone the next. Titles seem to be on a constant rotation and they never replenish. The only discs I've seen there more than once are Ant Bully & Accepted.
I'm on the NY/CT border, btw.
Mr. Cinema 03-13-07, 10:00 AM Titles were selling at my Walmart. I go in there enough to notice new stock. Now, titles like Batman Begins and Superman Returns are completely removed from the section. They have 3 HD DVD and 3 BD tags. I believe now it's Babel, The Departed, and 1 other title for each side. They replaced most of the section with $12 2-pack movies featuring a mix of crappy Martin Lawrence films, etc.
Target around here now has a better selection. Granted, they don't get every new title, neither of mine has Departed, but they did get Babel on both formats.
Mr. Cinema 03-14-07, 08:33 PM My Walmart can't make up its mind. Now, they have re-done their high-def section again. This time, however, there are now 30 spots for a mix of HD DVD and BD. They only had a few in stock, but it's good to see they are planning to really expand again.
ryoohki 03-14-07, 08:39 PM Here it was 50/50 in october, now today, the HD DVD section is dead (like less than 20 titles), they have all latest bluray and they rised the prices on HD DVD and BLuRay.. WAY TO GO ! LOL
eXstasie 03-14-07, 08:41 PM Does anyone else feel very dirty when they go into Wal-Mart?
I feel like trailer trash and find that the atmosphere in Wal-Mart is totally chaotic. I tried to avoid that place at all costs...unless its to get cheap HD movies.
swpsacs1 03-14-07, 10:25 PM I live at an apex of a triangle between two Super Wal-marts that are both 10 minutes from my house. (Utah) The bigger of the two does not stock either HD DVD or Blu-ray, the Target next door does, but no new titles since Babel. :( Target is about $5 cheaper than Best Buy next door also. The other has both Blu-ray and HD DVD. Good prices, lower than Amazon and Target, however just a few cents usually. I say they have about 25 Blu-ray titles and 20 HD DVD titles. Casino Royale was sold out before I got there at about 9am on Tuesday morning.
I wish both had a good selection, at least then Best Buy would price match.
originalprime 03-14-07, 11:27 PM All of the Wal-Mart stores in my area stock both formats equally. There isn't a huge selection of either, but they do stock them. They even have decent prices occasionally.
Chronicle-Rod 03-15-07, 04:24 AM As in thewretched's example, the Wal-Mart here carries both, but Blu Ray gets new releases like The Prestige and the latest HD-DVD release is months old - the Donner cut of Superman. I know the person who runs the electronics section and gave them my card to call me when they get anything new in for HD-DVD, but haven't gotten a call in weeks - and that call was a restock of We Were Soldiers.
