When I set my HDTV to 1:1 int he HDMI settings, the menu covers the whole screen in 1080i. but when I pop in a ps2 game the screen goes all black except for a small area where the game is displayed. I did the Full screen/zoom aspect but the PS2 games look horrible.

How can i make the small display bigger and keep the quality?

When blowing up a low res image to cover a large screen it is going to look bad, there is no way getting around it without buying an expensive scaler to upconvert the image for you. It is the same as why people complain that SD feeds look horrible on their new HDTVs, junk in junk out.

I would imagine your 1080i TV has a nice upscaler built in, but HDMI bypasses the upscaler and just shows a direct signal. I bet if you could connect the PS3 via component it would use the TV upscaler and look better. I dont have a PS3 so I dont know if you can have both the component and HDMI cables at the same time connected.

I will try the component cables to test put that theory

Ok using the component cables did not fix the problem, at 1:1 mode the viewable area is @ the center and it only occupies like 20% of the screen. I guess I only get to play PS2 games on that small area? Does anybody here get past this issue? how?

(for those who didn't understand, it adds black bars to the top, bottom, left, right while it should only add the bars to left & right)

PS: On an interesting note, I have a 1360x768 TV (displays up to 1080i) and with HDMI it only gets up to 1080i, but with the component It did 1080p(wtf?) scaled down.

i think people said before when you are starting the game hold X and Triangle? it forces it into widescreen progressive mode if it has such an option (which i believe GOW2 does have)

Will that make the screen bigger?
Im getting like a 6" by 6" box in the center of my 32" tv

Well, you DO have it set in 1:1 mode, right? So, you are seeing the 640x480 pixels you are telling it to show. Your TV has 768 horizontal lines, and you are only using 480 of them. That's what 1:1 means. Anything else isn't going to be 1:1.

Unless you are using your computer, there is absolutely no reason to have the TV set to 1:1. But, the resolution of the PS2 games is always going to be 640X480, so don't expect crystal clear pictures.

You need to uncheck all progressive modes from the PS3 menu every time you want to play PS2 games. Then they will look just the same as when you used a PS2. It sucks you have to do this, but them's the brakes. ONly have the top most option on: 480i NTSC standard, I believe. Try it and tell me if I'm right or wrong. That's my only advice.

I can tell you right now that you are wrong. I have every option on my PS3 selected and I don't have any problem playing 480i PS2 games on my PS3. You don't need to unclick anything.

The problem is that he has 1:1 pixel mapping selected. THAT is what he needs to uncheck. The problem isn't on his PS3. The problem is that his TV is doing exactly what he is asking it to--only using a 640X480 box of pixels.

Maybe for your television, I'm wrong. My widescreen has horrible overscan issues on HD material, so when I use the PS3 to play PS2 games, it outputs in 1080i or 480p (whatever I have checked highest basically). Normal material in 1080i is cut off because of the overscan. PS2 material has a black border around the bottom and edges: even with overscan. The only thing that fixed this was unchecking all HD formats. Remember, the PS2 was not HD and could only be HD if you selected it in game. I'm not wrong. We simply have different televisions. And the PS3 still has issues that need updated. I'm not sure what his pixel mapping options are. I'm going by a normal widescreen HD television.

PLus I'm using component cables. There might be a reason that the PS2 player will be a software emulator soon? Eh?

I don't personally think anyone should be using 1:1 mode on their television unless they're using it with a computer. It doesn't make any sense when viewing normal video content, since you would actually *want* the TV to be upscaling rather than simply leaving most of the pixels unused.

If i select the "Aspect" on the display it will fit the image to the screen but the jaggies make the game unplayable

bassmonkee is correct. You said you had set your HDTV to 1:1 mapping. Besides that option, what other options are available for that setting? List them out. Better yet, try them out. Don't forget to let us know the results.

TV is Olevia 332h

theres 1:1, Aspect, Full Screen, Zoom 1, Zoom 2

Aspect takes the 4:3 image and fits it to the screen having black bars on each side, but this makes the picture look horrible

Ps2 is going to look bad on all LCDs compared to crts, it just wasn't designed with LCDs in mind. Contrary to what they said above, it is not your tv or just your tv at least, I've seen ps2s on samsung and sony lcds as well and they all look bad. The PixelWorks® DNX chip gets used in a lot of sets. There are some things you can do to though to make it look better though, like calibrating your set. Check out cnet's HDTV tuning guide for some easy stuff you can do. Other than that, you could avoid sitting so close to the tv. Another solution is to try xploder, I was in a similar situation as you so I bought it a while ago. It doesn't work well with everything, but with GOWII it works really well. I set it to 720p and scale the image to full screen, looks acceptable after going from my XBR CRT HDTV. It is going to be look more jaggedy but unless your willing to buy a video scaler( more than the price of your tv) you'll have to live with that.

1:1 is gonna make it look small because its only a 640x480 image on a 1360x768 screen. Aspect is gonna make it fit the screen and of course it's gonna look jaggy because it's a 640x480 trying to fit a larger screen & also the PS2 didn't have great anti-aliasing. I have the same 332h and SD content looks horrible, but that's the caveat you have.
