View Full Version : Circuit City and HD-DVD
A while back there was some speculation about CC being anti-HD-DVD. Some here (including myself) tried explaining that it's not the store's fault, but the HD-DVD camp not pushing their format.
It looks like it's about to change: HD-DVD and Circuit City (http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/03/12/hd-dvd-looks-circuit-citys-way-compels-independent-filmmakers/)

Mad Chemist 03-13-07, 01:32 AM All the demo rooms and TV displays are showing HD DVD except for one Blu-Ray setup at my local CC. HD DVD movies are nicely displayed on end caps while all the Blu-Ray titles are randomly thrown into a box. Been that way for several weeks now.
FatiusJeebs 03-13-07, 01:36 AM Well..I guess I know where to do my shopping from now on.
I wouldn't mind buying from CC if they'd price HD DVDs lower than Best Buy. $34.99-$39.99 for a combo isn't in my range.

That's pretty funny. Last time I was there all the HD DVDs were in a box near the unused cash register in the DVD department and the blurays were all in a display rack over near the TVs.

They will price match.
If within 30 days from the date of our offer, you show us a lower, currently advertised price from another local store with the same item in stock, we will gladly refund 110% of the difference between our price and theirs.

CC will do anything to take away business from Best Buy. I have been giving my business to CC instead of Best Buy lately.
dan_o_00 03-13-07, 02:44 PM I was just at a CC in Madison, WI this weekend and they had a floor area set up with Blu-Ray. They had a couple demo rooms but I didn't see what was in that.

Funny! That looks like an ad from last fall. Where are the ads for new movies. Also, great to put horrendous prices in the ad as well. Who would pay $35 for those!!!
I am going to start shopping at CC though. I'm sick of BB. They only get my business when they have a decent sale or no one else has what I'm looking for and I want to buy it local.
Anyone wanting to buy movies from CC, just go to Target.com and print off their price for the movies. They have the same prices as Amazon. They match it and give 10% more off the difference. I've done it several times. Target had it listed for $28.95. CC had it for $39.99. I ended up getting it for less than $29.
I've had my eye on The Breakfast Club combo which Target lists for $23.95 but no one in town carries it to match. Sooner or later, I'm going to have to break down and just buy it online. Maybe April 15th! HD-DVD Amazon purchase day!
TWISTED BULLET 03-13-07, 03:34 PM Yea, we need to start supporting this.
That is correct. There has been a profound change in alliance at cc. Used to be all BD, but now my local stores demo both the A-2 and Xbox360 player. Meanwhile most A-2 displays at bb have disappeared. cc definitely deserves our support more than does bb at this point.
My CC has an entire aisle dedicated to HD DVD and Blu Ray movies prominently displayed. Good for them :)
Those CCCs! :D Oh wait, they are finally doing something right! :)
Meatpopsicle 03-13-07, 11:08 PM My CC actually has an HD DVD Section, but I've yet to see any blu-ray titles anywhere.
I don't think all of the CC stores received the memo. I stopped into the Natick, MA store today as I was driving by and I thought I would see if things had changed much there regarding HD DVD promotion.
They had two 46 inch Samsung TVs set-up side by side with the Toshiba HD-A2 and the Samsung hooked up to them. It was immediately clear that the BD set-up looked better and then I realized they were both playing Fantastic Four (not synchronized so it took a few seconds). I asked a sales rep to change the SD copy of Fantastic Four in the A2 to an HD DVD for comparison. It took a little convincing that Fox' Fantastic Four in the A2 wasn't an HD DVD, but he was good enough to go get a copy of Serenity from a drawer. The next thing I noticed was the TV that the A2 was hooked into was using zoom. Every remote except the Samsung tv remote was sitting there. I had to wait about 10-15 minutes to get someone to get the manager to fix this. The manager came by and fixed it and quickly walked away without saying anything or even looking at the screen for more than a few seconds. I got the sense my requested tweaking was not very welcome. To the right of the BD set-up was a sign for 2 free BD's with purchase and a rack full of BD titles. No HD DVD titles were anywhere near the A2 and no mention of the 5 free titles via mail with the A2.
How bad is it when they try to handicap the A2 by playing an SD DVD for comparison and then have to zoom it because the upconversion looks pretty close to the BD? What a joke. I have no problem pitting these formats against each other. I'm just asking to please kindly set them both up properly and let the consumer decide.
To their credit the store did have a decent selection of HD DVDs on prominent end caps in the movie media section of the store.
