Happy Anniversary JVC KD-HDR1

It was one year ago today, that I waited with baited breath to rip open the parcel that had arrived from Crutchfield so that I could begin my journey in the exploration of HD Radio broadcasts. I began my installation in the late afternoon, and by late evening say 8 or 9:00 PM with test light in hand, all wire harness connections appropriately spliced, I began my scan for HD. In the Akron-Cleveland Ohio market, there were a handful of FM stations to choose from maybe 5 at the time.
My immediate response was that of being overwhelmed by the boost in the dynamic audio reproduction leading to punchier highs. Noticing the convenient features associated with the radio’s display also figured prominently. There was nothing like having the station’s call sign readily available along with the option of reading the Artist and Song titles. Then my attention shifted to the audio controls of the HDR1. Having user-friendly access to the 7 band equalizer was such a plus for the price point; and least we forget, the Circle surround with Bass frequency Time Alignment took my stock speakers to heights they had never reached with my stock AM FM CD radio. Of course being able to play mp3s and wma sound files for the first time, made long trip personal audio options just that much sweeter as well.
I must say that in the years time since JVC released its first all-in-one “in-dash” effort they has been much time to comment on this unit. Overall, I give JVC many Kudos for making the tenacious effort of providing the first simplified HD Radio solution for the car. The AM section sensitivity has been a sticking point performance wise but there are some ways around forcing the AM section to hear HD as well as analog signals better by making your car antenna tuneable in that band. The jury is still out on who will make an AM signal booster that will work seamlessly in the car.
JVC should be proud of this unit for having reached the major leagues of product distribution with the Walmart HD-W10 deal which appears to be a reincarnation of the existing KD-HDR1 with a cosmetic model tag upgrade. Sometimes, it’s not easy being the first on the block with a brand new product that introduces the masses to sparkling new radio technology, but for all intents and purposes, I felt that JVC had hit the ball out of the park ONE YEAR AGO TODAY March 13th 2007.
