View Full Version : REVIEW: Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire
For anyone that’s caught “Judgement Day” on G4 in the states, the same guys have a show in Canada called “Reviews on the Run.” Hands down, it is the most comprehensive, fun, and reliable games review place on TV. Hosted by Victor Lucas and Tommy Tallarico, “Reviews on the Run” achieves something that shows like "X-play" could never accomplish : actual depth and insight. (Along with a high level of entertainment.) Here’s a link to their site if you want to check on the credentials: http://www.elecplay.com/index.php?template=rotr
Anyway, here’s their latest PS3 game review, that I've roughly transcribed off the TV:
Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire
for the PS3, by Namco Bandai
“If Sony’s going to try to get 600 dollars from people, they need to not even allow these games to come out on their system, cuz this is embarrassing.” Tommy
“This has got to be the worst and most disappointing big robot experience I’ve ever had.” Victor
Cons:
- atrocious frame rate (even worse in multi-player split screen)
- awful camera angles
- they screwed up the special effects (weapons effects)
- horrid collision detection (can't tell when you're hitting someone with your sword.)
- annoying fog in every level
- invisible walls
- crappy graphics, everything bland and boring
“I’ve seen better looking stuff of the PSP, environmentally.” Victor.
- jittery aiming controls
- no on-line play
- poor environmental damage
Pros:
+ You can shoot guy’s arms off
+ Mech detail is almost acceptable
+ destructible buildings
Score (out of 10):
tommy
1.5
victor
1.0
“I christen this the PS3's "Bomberman: Act Zero"...Basically, this is the biggest insult to giant mech fans, like myself, the world has ever seen.” Victor
“It was painful!” Tommy
Hmmmm, kinda sounds like we should maybe avoid this one, huh!
This week (Friday) they should be reviewing Motorstorm. I'll post there next PS3 game review, whatever it is.
ppshooky 03-13-07, 10:39 AM I was excited to hear about the Gundam game, but then I read reviews on it.
Now, I want Gundam Musou, but I'm waiting for it to be announced that it is coming out in the US. If I don't hear an announcement on it in 6 months, I'll buy it from Play-Asia.com.
In all the years I've watched this show, I'm pretty sure it's the lowest scores they've ever given a game. (That I've seen, anyway.)
“If Sony’s going to try to get 600 dollars from people, they need to not even allow these games to come out on their system, cuz this is embarrassing.” TommyTommy has a point. If the game is really as bad as every review says it is, Sony would have known it going going in. If they still HAD to release it (for contractual reasons, or whatever) why not make it a 10 dollar download? Sure, it's still crap, but at least it would be throw-away cheap and finally something new on the Playstation Store!
ppshooky 03-13-07, 11:42 AM Well, it's a bit relative.
When the PS2 came out, $300 seemed like a lot at the time and yet there was a slew of horrible games on that platform. Even worse, the Xbox and Xbox360.
I'm sure when the next great console comes out at $1,000, there will still be plenty of abominations they call "games".

The future price of consoles aside, 600+ dollars is A LOT for right now, and if Sony expects people to spend that much, they've got to be a little more careful in their quality control department. This game will not help their cause, is my point. Especially so soon after the launch.
Plunk it down on the Playstation store, though, and it at least looks like they're giving us something! They'd probably even make waaay more money on it. I wouldn't buy the game at Best Buy for $39-$69, but I probably would at the Playstation Store for $10. And so would many other people, I'm guessing.
ppshooky 03-13-07, 02:53 PM Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire is a launch title. You should expect that there will be a few good games, but mostly bad games.

Of course. And I'm not really in the position to complain about the game, as I haven't even played it!
I just really think that the game (or any other obvious sub-par game, launch or otherwise) could be much better sold to us for a lot cheaper in the Playsation Store. Instead of promising the world to us with the PS3 and giving us Gundam in its place, I'd be so much more enthusiastic about the whole PS3 experience if games like Gundam were a 10 dollar download. Yes? No? Maybe?
Based on the reviews, are you going to buy it for $40+? Or, horrid reviews and all, would you spend $10 on it at the Playstation Store? Frick, I downloaded Q-bert!! And I NEVER would have bought it at Best Buy!!

I see what you're saying, but I don't think thowing it in the PS store is any better. At that point, you have people paying for complete crap from the PS store and getting a bad taste in their mouth because of it. Same as buying it at the store. If the retail game gives the system a bad name, having on the store will give it a bad name.
I think for most it's almost better to have it at $60. Makes folks think twice about buying the garbage. For $10, a lot more people will grab it on a whim and realize what complete trash it is.
briankmonkey 03-13-07, 03:38 PM every system has crappy games to avoid, that is just the reality of the industry as far as I can remember since the Atari2600 days.

If the retail game gives the system a bad name, having on the store will give it a bad name. Hm, that's where I disagree. Yes, crap is still crap no matter how much it costs. However, I have a couple of young nephews (9 and 11) who come to play on the PS3, and they love these kinds of games, and don't care so much about graphics, frame rates, or crappy invisible walls, etc. They just enjoy going in and playing. Now, I'd never spend the full price amount for a game like Gundam, but for 10 bucks, I'd be more than happy to have a simple little game that they could get right into, and maybe even actually enjoy. Even if you or I would find it a crappy game.
I don't know, maybe I'm just so bored with the Playstation Store that I'm willing to take about anything just so long as it's new! :p

Well I'm sure it will be a candidate for the bargain bin much sooner than other games, so could be a good pick up then ;)

I would think Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom would make it there first!

Don't forget about Genji, was beautiful but I think anyone that purchased it immediately regretted it.
briankmonkey 03-13-07, 04:10 PM I'll buy Untold Legends once it hits a bargain price. My friends from another forum said it is similar to Baulders Gate and not actually fun even if it is a lot of rinse and repeat (like Baudlers Gate which I enjoyed).
Gengi's demo wasn't bad for gameplay, just the camera angles. Graphics are gorgeous on that creek as well. I'd pick up for a bargain as well.
I swear this wasn't just another troll post intended to rant against the launch titles. For one thing, R:FOM is one of the best games I've ever played! I posted this review because it's a PS3 game and because it was reviewed by a couple of guys on a TV show that I really like and respect. It had nothing to do with any biases I might have for or against the PS3. Next week, I'm hoping they review Motorstorm. I like reviews, even if they come a little late.
My subsequent responses in this post were basically me just thinking of a way that Sony could get me to pay for a game with such horrid reviews like this. Gundam's pretty much dead, I'd have to think. The Playstation Store is pretty much dead, too. Why not combine the two? Kinda solves both problems, I think.
Er, now I'm late for somerset (8p) and my "Beginner's+ PIN" map in R:FOM! It's just after 3pm central - everyone's welcome to stop in and join me! (I'm kessler, there.)
QuadESL63 03-13-07, 04:32 PM Yep, this is a bad game graphically even if it is a launch title. As a Gundam fan for many years I think this is a disgrace to the title.
On the other hand Gundam Musou is much better (graphically) but it is a arcade action game instead of a simulation like Crossfire.

Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom wouldn't be so bad...if there wasn't so many bugs and ridiculously over-powered warriors. It seemed like every game I played on had 80% warrirors.
Not to mention, you can't port your character to other online games, so you have to start from scratch each time. I just wish they could have designed that aspect of the game to be like Diablo I & II.

I have it on import and there's a very good chance it's coming to the US. I believe around late summer. To let you know...the gameplay is very much like Dynasty/Samurai Warriors. If you like those kind of games, then you'll like it. Graphically....I believed they could've done a little bit more given the untapped power of the PS3. Maybe in the next one, that'll change.

uh, dont like it, dont buy it? Why would anyone buy Gundam? From day one, all reviews said it was pretty bad...

I loved the Dynasty Warriors series. I had Dynasty Warriors 1, when it was 1 on 1 fighting game. Got Dynasty Warriors 2-5, I think. Also have Samurai Warriors as well.
That genre in combination with Gundam made this a must have game for me. I heard of rumors of Gundam Musou coming in Summer 2007, but I plan on waiting for an official announcement before I decide on getting the import version.
Now, if they come out with another SD Gundam G Generation game for the PS3, I would actually pre-order that game as an import.
