I think I'll be jumping in on the HD race sometime this year (Summer or by the new year at the latest). The Samsung dual looks really good, though I may just get one of the very nicely priced Toshiba's before then.

Despite not owning a player, I went ahead and did my part. Ordered Children of Men. Thinking about picking up a few others (Hollywoodland, Happy Feet, Smokin' Aces).

I already own three HD DVD movies (all combos--The Departed, Good Night and Good Luck and Superman Returns). I had Kiss Kiss, but no longer.

Can't wait to actually see them in HD.

this is how it started for me. i bought a combo disk a few weeks before getting my a1.

today, i will reach 100 hd dvd titles when i place my order for Ultimate Matrix set. :D

Oh darn, planet earth is on my list. ARGH, if only i had more cash right now. I only could get one disk today though. Maybe I need to take them up on that offer of an Amazon credit card... =P

No worries though, over the next 4 weeks I will be placing 2 more substantial orders, PE will be in one of them. I just wish it had worked out that my spare cash had landed this week. As it is, it did, but some other matters took priority.

No worries. I'm sure everyone would like to see a sustained surge rather than just one day. What happened today was astonishing. What would be even MORE astonishing would be a sustained lead.

I order four today and plan on ordering at least one more a week for the next four weeks. I haven't bought any since this thread was instigated.

It does make me wonder what the numbers on Amazon would have been like today if Warner didn't have their sale.

I'm sad to say 38 ... i couldn't stop myself! 14 In Stock's 24 Preorders. I haven't bought a HD-DVD in over 2 months. I know I went overboard but I rationalized it by saying... the preorders are spread out over the summer... Plus I did skip the 5/8 new releases :)

I think this is at least the third Amazon/HD DVD purchase day we had here on AVS. I like to think I helped instigate the first one but to tell the truth since then I’ve felt it more relevant to just consistently continue to order the movies as they become available rather then putting off any purchases I would have made to wait for one specific day.

But since these days have caused a few extra blind buys and everyone seems happy with it, I think the first purchase day we had was last September but I’d have to look it up to be sure I’d suggest that being the next big purchase day and would also wind up being the 2nd annual one.

Anyway as for today’s purchases, I already have a good sized library of HD DVD’s ( 72 so far ) so I have pretty much all that I want that has already been released so my purchases for today had to be all pre-orders. Today I have pre-ordered the following 11 titles including two that were box sets:

Since everyone kept mentioning how high Planet Earth was going up the charts I decided to investigate and see if it was something I really would want to watch. With 2 girls still in school and interested in this type of programming, it seems like a no brainer, so I went ahead and added it to my order for today. I had 12 discs preordered before today and now I have a total of 18. All HD-DVD.

3) The Fountain (blind buy, but I'm a huge Aronofsky fan)

I had planned to get Smokin' Aces on Amazon today as well, but Best Buy here in Canada actually had an awesome preorder price. So I got it from there instead.

Hey guys, is this really significant? I mean 1500 discs is really just a drop in the bucket compared to a days DVD sales across the country, right? Don't get me wrong, I own an HD DVD player and want the format to succeed. But just how significant is this? Aren't we really quite a bit away from having any real market penetration as compared to DVD? Or do we only care about our success vs. BD? Inventory levels can be deceiving. Also there are tons of lurkers here for every poster here. A lot of people and many more than 1500 discs may have been sold.

Even if it was that low, it puts some of the Blu-ray hype into perspective.

But since HD DVD players sales are increasing with the price drops, more releases. greater retail inventory, POS presence and moving into the spring sales period, April 15th may move from a bit of symbolism to the start of a HD DVD sales surge.

At any rate , its tough for a Blu-ray PR guy to explain..... and it shows HD DVD is competitive with a little TLC.....

The sales ranking for PE is obviously impressive. However, can it stay in the top 100 for 2 months like 'Casino Royale' has done?Does it really matter...probably not being its $70 vs $25. ;)

The price is obviously higher for PE, but the sales have skyrocketed because of the "buy hd dvd day." Will the ranking remain after the day is over?...i highly doubt it.

I bought 11 disks earlier (NONE were pre-orders) and just added Planet Earth pre-order. What a great day for HD DVD!

I just hope that a lot of the orders were NOT pre-orders so that we see a surge in numbers now and also some sustained growth as new titles are released. Either way, my XA2 will certainly be getting some MAJOR use starting Weds when my order arrives!

PS3 vs. the blender sounds pretty good to me too! ;) Well he could drop a first generation HD XA1 on it. :D

That first generation HD DVD player, should be non the worse for wear, being built like a tank, while the PS3 would be pieces.....

The HD XA2 is pretty solid too pound for pound , but it has better uses ....

Actually, 'casino royale' was not a part of the 50% off sale neither was 'the departed' which remained at the top of the videoscan numbers. Select fox and sony titles participated and little changed in their ranking according to the nielsons.

I have 16 HD DVDs on preorder at Amazon including Ultimate Matrix set (counted as 1) and just pre-ordered Planet Earth Box Set and Monty Python's Meaning of Life. For the first time, there are way too many HD DVDs than I can order. Who says there are no movies to order in HD DVD? :)

As to answer your question, who can know for sure? The only thing that is certain is that it beat CR in ranking and that you came here to stir things up. You really need to go back to the BD forum unless you have something meaningful to add, instead of speculative fanboy FUD. Nobody here is claiming that PE will remain at #5 for weeks to come, so I don't see the point of your postings.

Planet Earth has been in the top 100 now for a while (maybe three or four weeks?).

I believe it entered the top 100 on 3/26 (and has been there ever since).

No one is expecting this to outsell Casino Royale. I think the price tag and subject matter both work against that happening. Still, *any* HD/BD title hitting #5 at this stage is impressive. The fact that it is a $70 box set is that much more of a feat.

There is no doubt, the hd dvd version of PE has wooped 'Casino Royale' according to the amazon rankings, which I feel is a good barometer when it comes to disc sales. These types of numbers can only help to influence the studios to release more high-def media. That's my justification anyway.

There were quite a few hd dvd trolls over in my parts when 'casino royale' was taking off. However, this reason shouldn't justify my presence on this forum.

The funny thing is he seems to think the whole nation has got on to Blu-ray Disc and only a few internet undeground people are into HD DVD. As if they're both not early adopter markets right now. I was at Target today and saw one person at Blu-ray Disc, while I was the one person looking at HD DVD. And despite their great selection (at least, of new stuff) of Blu-ray Discs at Wal-Mart, I've never seen people looking; mostly they use the shelves to stuff mismatched DVDs on top of their high def counterparts (of both flavors).

Guys, it means nothing in the long run.

On April 14th at 10:30PM, PE HD was 15 and PE BR was 23. And out of the top 14, BR had 10 of the 14. It shows that BR IS on top and this one day won't last for long. But this one day was huge for HD-DVD, I can't deny that. HD-DVD folks can't do this all the time because they will run out of money or their wives will get really mad.
So spending $1000 on a player won't break the bank?

The reason I'm disappointed is that it shows that sales for both formats are extremely slow; the fact that one forum throwing an event like this could make sales figures spike tells me that the volume being moved for all these movies is tiny. This also means that there is no end to this war in sight; and that, regardless of which side you're backing, is disappointing.

Nope I'm happy just knowing that Sony was dead wrong (When are they not?) in declaring Blu-ray the victor already. Samsung is already going neutral, who will be next?

I see what you're saying, but it can't say much for SD-DVD sales at Amazon either if we can spike Planet Earth to number 4. Well this is exactly my point; I suspect that Amazon's SD-DVD sales numbers are small compared to those put up by big box retailers (say Wal-Mart and Best Buy). The reason I'm disappointed is that it shows that sales for both formats are extremely slow; the fact that one forum throwing an event like this could make sales figures spike tells me that the volume being moved for all these movies is tiny. This also means that there is no end to this war in sight; and that, regardless of which side you're backing, is disappointing.

Don't think it was just this forum doing everything. The fire started here for sure, but I saw a few other forums yesterday who also had similar topics posted and were referencing this forum. So, other forums did have posters rallying together to make yesterday a big day for HD DVD.

The only titles I've ever canceled are when studios delayed release on there titles without giving a new release date such as all the Fox movies...

On a personal comment, I'm glad to see (surprised by it but glad nonetheless) to see an expensive educational box set such as Planet Earth get more attention and better rankings then your recent cartoon and kiddie movies that so many seem to be raving for

WOW!!!!!!! I guess HD DVD is not dead after all. Anyway I just ordered my second Planet Earth (HD DVD) for my little brother...who went format neutral just 3 weeks ago. He has been a BD only fan from the very beginning...since HD DVD players are under $300 and Universal started releasing titles again he couldn't resist anymore. I have been saying all along HD DVD would survive the BD onslaught of misinformation and their huge marketing campaign. To see Planet Earth at a $70 premium at number #5 just blows me totally away. I would have never thought this could happen. HD DVD is as strong as ever. I have also noticed quite a few BD only owners now going format neutral by picking up a HD DVD player…I guess Heroes on HD DVD was too much for them to handle. So all I can say is GOOD NEWS for HD DVD!!!!!! Have Fun! And stay in your own HD DVD forum and show some class…don’t be like MSpeed6 who has become the laughing stock of this forum. :)

That day I'm going to go broke but ya know what it will be worth it!!

He He, I m from Europe visiting Japan and just spent 600 yen which is like 6 bucks or so I think reading all of todays postings in this thread.

Good work. I can report that although Blu Ray supposedly has a giant lead in Japan I have only been able to find any Blu ray titles whatsoever in 3 out of about 25 CD/DVD stores I ve visited. They have 96 percent of just about nothing.

I ll make some buys when I get home to helt keeping the figures up next week.
