awmurray put it better than I could from a previous thread:

The idea is to show support for HD DVD by buying movies on a specific day. There is no better way to show support for HD DVD than by backing it financially. That is the language the movie studios understand best. If there is a strong demand for HD DVD software, then hopefully Blu-ray only studios will at least go neutral.

I would also add that the point is to also have a little fun and to try to see how high we can spike sales for one day.

I have e-mailed Universal and Amazon to see what, if anything, they can do to promote April 15th. I will be e-mailing others as well.

The date has been confirmed as the one year anniversary of the launch of HD DVD in the U.S.

Us HD DVD owners are doing it because we love HD DVD, we like movies, it is the one year anniversary of HD DVD, etc

The Blu-Ray supporters are doing it because they hate HD DVD and are for more DRM.

I've currently got 25 HD-DVD pre-orders paid for and awaiting their street dates! Even if I supported that format, there aren't 25 Blu-Ray titles available that I would even want! I guess I'm about a decade too old and a few IQ points too high to appreciate the likes of Ultraviolet, Talledega Nights, or Stealth! :D

Perhaps you should have taken a day when Blu-ray is almost certain to win as your day to prove yourselves.

Like the day POTC 1 & 2 come out. You might even give Disney pause if their sales aren't superior to HD DVD's on the day.

But if the impossible happens and the regular sales of BD by then outpace your HD DVD Day, what then? Will you finally realize that your supporting a niche product without a future and give up? ;)

I love my XA2, but it is very niche. I see nothing that is going to lift it out of that.

I agree! I support HD, but seriously fellas, don't you think Sony is going to warn the studios about this in advance. That could take a lot of the steam out of it, especially if it's a one day blip and there's no follow through. Still it sounds like fun, so I'll be watching.

You don't have to make it add up to $700... just the difference in cost between a HD-DVD player and a Blu-Ray player.

You said you own 19 movies and plan on buying 6 more. That would save you $100 so far. So if I own a $600 PS3 with 25 movies and you own a $500 HD-DVD player with 25 movies, we both invested the same amount of money into HD.

I bought two Combos about $7.00 more than you for the two.
Paid $17.?? for most of the titles . Kong was more ...A hem ..

My player cost $400.00 last november ...Getting lower all the time .It has more functioning features that I have used .
Ethernet , yes downloaded 2.0 Fw with it ...

Love the extras . Makes much more of a movie experience !!How they conceived the ideas and make the movie , lots of neat imfo ...You don't know what your missing ...

I really believe studios will go neutral , in the meantime I can upconvert or wait it out...I have over 700 SD's , plenty to use this feature ..

Also , I own my player and choose not to go neutral myself as thats pricey ...
So , Subtracting the difference in player cost did not make sense to me at all ..
Buying a blu-ray to be able to get 1% or less titles for $3.50-$4.00 less wont make the player pay itself off ....

So the few combo's wont add up to much really . The older movies are non combo in the future , plus not all of them are $25.00 anyway . The margin narrows as time goes by ...
Ready to buy your first HD-Dvd Player , they are available to you too !!

I like this idea. And: I don't think we should aim to beat BD sales on that particular day. To be honest: I dont care about them and their "buy 2 BDs plan". My intention is to celebrate HDDVD and to get new stuff for my shiny new player.

It'd be interesting to see whether we can move ranking on a particular title, so I'll take the HDScape, too. Wanted to buy some sceneries and test discs anyway. Don't know already which titles I'll buy this time (last time I ordered 15) but will disclose the titles after the purchase, if needed for statistics.

Hint to OP: I'm already on your list ;-)

Is there a way to track overall Amazon HD DVD disc sales for the day?I don't think there is a reliable one. If a disc sells out then it will be difficult to track the number that sold (were ordered) for it. If a title is in stock without restocking going on then I think we can usually get close for that title, but sometimes it looks like Amazon plays little games with the stock numbers. As an example of trying to track sales, you can go to www.eproductwars.com/dvd and down to "The Departed" on HD DVD. Click on "View Sales Ranking History and Price Comparisons". Then over on the left click on "View more sales rank and quantity history". Now on the right you can click on the graph and put the mouse over different spots on either the in stock numbers (the green graph) or the sales ranking (the orange graph). Sometimes there are spikes down and then back up real soon after like there that I'm guessing are just Amazon not counting some stock at one point and then counting it later.

From looking at that chart, the last big restocking I see was 3/8/07 at about 16:08. At that time they showed 2043 in stock. The last entry I see is for 3/14/07 at 17:14 and shows 1828 in stock. That is a drop of 215 in the span of about 6 days and one hour, or an average of about 36 per day.

Nobody can deny 2 things...As a medium, Blu-Ray is superior...But thats like having awesome hardware and no software...Which is where HD-DVD kicks in as they have the amazing picture quality using new codecs and not codecs years old...But I hear BR is using the new VC-1 in select dvds so I commend them for that...Damn it I cant choose, thank god I have both but the last time I checked my que list off of Blockbuster Online is largely filled with nothing but HD-DVD. :D

Also count me in, I was wanting to purchase 4 Brothers and Full Metal Jacket so why not this would be a great time to do so.

Maybe we could make this a regular occurrence, but instead of just Amazon we could select companies that seem to actively support HD-DVD or are a least neutral. Sort of like a buyers reward card but in reverse, we could come up with a canned response to add to any comments field during the order to let them know their continued support is appreciated. Just a thought, I don't want to get all Mickey Rooney or anything. (you know, "Hey kids, we can put on a show and save the old johnson farm") But maybe we could persuade other vendors to increase their support.

I'm amazed by the Blu ray group. They just don't get that this is just a fun thing to do by like minded people. It's to celebrate the one year anniversary of HD-DVD by people who love the quality of PQ and AQ HD-DVD brought to them. Sure there has been problems but overall it's been a fantactic mind-blowing trip of a year. So Blu ray guys, give us a break and let us have our fun.

The Blu-Ray owners are too in love with the future possibilities of DRM on Blu-Ray to let HD DVD owners have fun. Luckily I just ignore the Blu-Ray owners, I couldn't care less if a bunch of them order Blu-Ray movies on the 15th.

I am in , definitly add my name to the list. Iwas actually just about to order 7 movies from Amazon but I will wait for the 15th and buy them then. Ill probably end up making a purchase for like 10 titles by that time. I think this is a great idea and a great way to kick off HD DVDinto its 2nd year and a great way of bring HD DVD out of that terriblle 2 month hiatus from new releases. I am now anxiously awaiting April 15th.

It would be nice if we could agree on a few titles to highlight that might be noticable on the dvdwars and hd game db tracking sites.....I already suggested the DVD sampler because it is cheap. I'm not planning on buying anything special (I'll watch), but I would say the titles you guys should select depend on what the goal is. If you want to see the in stock numbers go down, then I would suggest picking something with enough stock so that it won't go to zero and make it so you can't track it anymore. You might have trouble getting people to wait until April 15th on a title like "Children of Men" since I'm guessing that some people around here are a little bit like crack addicts who had their dealer suddenly go on vacation for a month and will be coming back in town on the 27th of March. If you want to move a title with a very low ranking up high then you need to pick something that isn't super popular at the time. If the goal is to see how many titles you can get to a ranking of better than 1000 then you need to spread the sales out (10-15 bought all within an hours time would probably move most titles up into the top 1000).

If you don't care about looking at in stock numbers then everybody who wants it could wait until the 15th to preorder "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", or something like that.

Of course, if all you are doing is manipulating the rankings then it isn't like it would mean the same thing as if rankings went there without intervention. But it could be interesting to see how much affect people here would have (which is a double edged sword).

In honor of this post, I'll buy 4 HD DVD's that day instead of 2.

That, and in celebration of the miserable performance of the PS3 in February. PS3 sold about 127k units (industry analysts expected 200k). Xbox 360 sold over 100k more than that, and the Wii over 200k more. In fact, PS2 outsold PS3 for the month.

The PS3 launch clearly helped BRD, but that big burst now may have peaked. Things should be real interesting this summer, fall and winter if HD DVD can get steady sales of their stand alones and 360 add-ons.

well thats it, I figured out my order last night after finding out about this 15th thingy. The only things that might change with that order could be I might add Hollywoodland and I migt get Children of Men early just because I really have been waiting for that one and would love to get that at Best Buy with some of my Reward Zone cash I have. Anyways a decent sized order and its a good thing I got a nice phat check last week that is 100% for spending on stuff like this.

Keep up the good work with the list of names, this really should be interesting and again its just a great way to kick off the 2nd year to HD DVD and even tho I am a dual format supporter, I prefer HD DVD much more than BD.
