What happened to the thread about the Albany best buy no longer retailing in the store HD-DVD?

Was it too offensive, regardless of veracity (in which case, im sure that this thread will be deleted too)?

Or was there some sort of other issue?

*Not trying to flamebait, I just want to know what is going on with that situation.

I think the problem might be that 1 data point doth not a trend make. As it is, there are far too many instances of people extrapolating experiences or pricing from 1 store or 1 vendor into global trends...

I would also like to know if Bestbuys in Albany New York have quit carrying HD-DVD.

This would be a major move, can anyone confirm?

I know for a fact the store has 9 copies of Batman Begins, so I doubt they quit carrying HD-DVD.

The story was that they would continue to carry HD-DVD for sale online only.

Are you seeing the copies instock on a website or have you been in the stores?

Someone has visited the store and all HD-DVDs had been removed. Have you physically been inside the store?

I just went online to BB.com & checked stores in the Albany area for in-stock pick-up of the A2. It came up with 6 stores in the Albany area, 4 of which had the A2 in stock. I also checked for the King Kong HD-DVD and all 6 stores had it in stock. Looks like they are still carrying HD-DVD in stores to me.

I've stopped buying anything from BB when I overheard a salesperson pushed an iPod by saying that there is no other MP3 player in the world that has playlist capability.

It is hard to know what any of the big box retailers carry when they do not have consistent displays. things move around too much and when a narrowly sku'ed product comes along they put it whereever they have space.

Every store I have seen displays both formats like after thoughts.

Ok, here's the scoop. I stopped into the Albany Crossgates Mall Best Buy (the store the claim was made about) today to pick up a something I'd ordered on the web, so I checked out the high def disc display.

It was the same as usual. Two racks of HD DVDs and two racks of Blu-rays right next to each other.

Sorry I didn't have my cell phone with me or I would have taken a pic.

I believe it.

Best Buys/Circuit Citys in my area openly recommend blu-ray over hd-dvd, taking them out of the stores is just the next step.

Not to be bias or anything but who in their right mind wouldn't recommend Blu-ray over HD DVD at this point? For now, Blu-ray is a safer bet. Of course, I would recommend waiting it out for a bit longer but Best Buy is in business to sell goods and they can't have people not buying.

I guess I'm not in the right mind. :) I stil wouldn't recommend BD over HD DVD. In fact, up until November '06, I'd recommend HD DVD; now I'd recommend not to buy anything at least until Summer '07

No single BB will drop HD DVD on their own. This is a corporation, people. All or nothing.

You did not hear him complete the sentence in which he said: "that makes Steve Jobs as much money." :-)

My Best Buy (that I work at) recommends HD DVD and will continue to do so.

Anyone that wants to steer thier friends and family to a player that does everything it's expected to and will work with any of their existing remotes. Not to mention the great upconversion on the hd-dvd players, most people on most setups wouldn't notice a difference between blu-ray and upconverted dvds.

How do you define most setups? If you mean hooked up to a 27" TV you could say the same about HD-DVD.

Upconversion is nice, but that's like buying a toaster because it makes frozen waffles as well. Yes, you get waffles but they're nowhere near as good as if you made the batter yourself and used a waffle maker.

Saying that upconversion looks as good as an HD disk, regardless of format, doesn't boost sales. If a salesperson told me that an upconverted disk looked as good as a high defination disk I would save several hundred dollars and buy an upconvert DVD player

Truth is that to most people BluRay and HDDVD look exactly the same. The decision comes down to whether their favorite movie(s) are available. If not, quality is a non-issue because there is nothing to look at.

If they don't know the difference, why even recommend a HD DVD player ...why not a decent upconvert player? Its a lot cheaper.

In this case it's not. The Albany BB has not dropped HD DVD.
