I've been searching for an answer, but have come up short. So, I thought I would ask the wonderful people here, since you guys have helped me out with so much already.

I have a Niles IR repeater that controls all of my components in my rack. Which include:

Sony Receiver
Sony DVD
Tivo Series 2
DirecTV Receiver
DirecTV HD DVR HR-20

The Niles IR repeater works great, never misses a beat, always does what I want…EXCEPT…the DirecTV HR-20.

This thing is so picky. It hardly ever gets the command on the first try. Watching recorded shows is a pain because the fast-forward does work and the play is always 10 presses in order for it to begin to play. Lately, I have been sitting in the corner of the couch and aiming the remote backwards to get the thing to work. And it works every time when I point in that general direction.

I have tried changing out eyes, different types of eyes, changing the low to high rely and nothing seems to work.

Has anyone else experience this situation, and if so…how do you end up fixing the problem?

Thanks

I have not dealt with that exact issue. However, I understand that many of the satellite receivers and DVRs are very sensitive to IR and can become easily overloaded by too much IR. That results in commands being ignored or parts of commands missed. The solution might be to take the IR emitter for the Direct TV DVR and move it an inch or two away from the front panel of the DVR's "eye". If you still have problems, move it little farther away or point the front of the emitter in a different direction slightly so that the IR does not go directly into the panel.

Hope that works for you.

Thanks...I think was a little too much power.

I took the eye off of the sensor and worked a little better...then I ended up putting down on the shelf facing up and that seem to do the trick. It's not even close to the sensor. I laid it on the shelf the the DirecTV HR-20 sits on and 2 days counting...no problems.

Thanks again.

Now its time to program my new MX-3000. See you in a couple of weeks. As that's what I have read on this forum. Its about 2 weeks for a non-programmer to get the remote working correctly and my just the way I want.

I also had this issue with my Direct TV box. Unfortunately, placing it on the shelf did not do the trick. I used a coat hanger to place the emitter 6-10" off the sensor and it works great!

I've tried everything known to man with my D* boxes.......blue painters tape over the eye, moving the emitter, black tape with a little pin hole in it, soldering a resistor in line on the emitter.......nothing. My next step was to just give up for a while and think. That was about 6 months ago.

If you are handy, you can make your own emitter out of a miniature IR led. The ones I use are in a clear package. The trick is that if it is overloading the sensor, I flip it around backwards. Enough IR leaks out of the back of the devices to trigger the sensor without overloading it. BTW, I bought my IR emitters for less than $10 for quantity 100.
