View Full Version : My PS3 actually "talks" to my HT!

I've noticed this several times, I start up the PS3 with a game in it but before the TV or AVR is on the PS3's inputs.
I figure I'll watch the last couple of min of a program while the game starts up & it'll be ready when I go to the PS3 input.
But it doesn't work that way!

I'm guessing the HDMI going to my TV is telling the PS3 that it's not on it's input so it doesn't need to start up yet, after 5 min or so when I tell my Harmony 880 to play a game & switch the AVR (Toslink) & the TV (HDMI) to the correct inputs only then does the game start up, this happens on all 3 of my PS3 games.

It's not a problem but it is intresting, to me at least.

I've noticed that too. To be honest I don't like it, because it forcest me to watch the splashscreens of the various company that created whtever movie or game I just inserted, and I could really care less about them.

Are you using the 880 (IR remote) to talk to the PS3 too or just to your other peripherals (AVR and TV)?

The 880 is an ir remote. The PS3 has no IR sensor, just bluetooth.

Sorry you dislike Harmony remotes so much; it actually has nothing to do with the remote. I, too, have noticed this, and I, too, have a Harmony 880. However, it also does it when I manually switch inputs on the TV. It is indeed the HDMI input of my TV (via a Monoprice 5x1 switch) "talking" to the PS3 that it is now receiving its signal. I also hate that it does this, because I also would like to turn on the PS3 while I'm finishing up something else on TV and be able to just hit "start" and begin the game.

I'll just add this to my list of reasons why I hate HDMI.

Yea like he said no Blutooth on the 880, hopefully Harmony will release a BT remote soon.

Is it not just a case of you've got the PS3 set to use HDMI, and it's sat waiting for the handshake? Untill it gets it it's just going to sit there waiting. Nothing really special about it.

This is nothing new at all. You should have noticed this when you set your PS3 up to use HDMI with your Tv. remember it did a test to find out what resolutions your Tv supports, and came back and told you what your tv's max resolution is? How would the PS3 now that unless it could "talk" to your tv. HDMI Handshake allows two HDMI components to communicate.

Nice thread crap. Are all your posts this good, helpful, on topic?

Anyway...

I noticed this thing with the PS3 as well. Seems to do more harm than good with the way I use the thing but whatever. It does the same thing for BD movies as well. The movies starts automagicly when I switch to the PS3 input with my HARMONY remote.

Strange - I do this all the time: Power up the PS3 and either start or continue watching TV.

When I finally switch to the PS3 input it is either waiting for me to hit the Start key (RFOM) or doing the demo thing. The PS3 is using HDMI cable directly to the TV, and it does not matter if the TV is on or not. I guess my set does the handshaking in it's sleep.

Just for fun, I disconnected the HDMI cable and started up the PS3. Sure enough, when I finally reconnected the HDMI cable the game began to start with the splash screen. Seems that you need a TV that does the handshaking regardless of the input selected. (Thanks Mitsubishi :) )

That's interesting. When you switch between HDMI sources is it relatively quick then? Since the handshake doesn't need to be re-established it should be a lot faster. That's a cool little feature.

I'd say NO, the switch between inputs is painfully slow -- on the order of 3-4 seconds.

Ok, maybe not so cool.

doesn't the component input do the same test? can't remember

anyways never noticed this on hdmi before... wonder if it stops anything else, downloads definately don't.

No you have to tell it (check the boxes) with component. I move my PS3 from my 50" to my 27" quiet often (because I cant find a 20giger) the 27" doesnt have HDMI. So I've gotten good at going from HDMI to component. LOL

Saw this activity a couple days ago for the first time too. Thought it was kinda funky. Anyway, my HP Plasma switches inputs pretty quick, so I just select HDMI when I first start the PS3, then jump back to what I'm doing. Just a second here and there... But would prefer it to happen in the background...

And yes, Skynet is online... Forgot which company is using that name for their sats, but they are up there.. waiting..... ;)
