Also: it supposedly improves "- Playback quality, and bookmarks in DVD Player"

My guess (untested as of yet) is that the improved .ac3 is related to the AudioFile parser; iirc it didn't properly detect the LFE channel before. Still no built-in decoder outside of DVD player as far as I can tell.

10.4.9 did not help at all. Boot Camping and in XP with PowerDVD the PQ is MUCH better. But I hate windows. This one time it just proves that getting in and tweaking some things can help. I want the option for Avivo in DVD Player like it is in PowerDVD. Better yet, this is Apple, it should detect it automatically.
