My HT is almost done, and I would like to add some sort of light that would flash in the theater for the doorbell.

I have a standard wired front doorbell with one chime. From google I found

Wireless-Doorbell-Signaler (http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-Wireless-Doorbell-Signaler/dp/B0001BUZSA)

Does anyone have any experience with this product? Or any other simular device?

I could run a wire from the chime to the theater, but it wouldn't be easy.

Any suggestions, ideas are greatly appreciated.

No experience with the product itself or any other similar product but...check to see at what distance this thing will work at. Amazon is good at taking back returns though you'll have to pay postage.

Also, you may want to check if the 24v step down transformer that runs your current doorbell is closer to where your HT is. You may just have to run a wire from that point and not the current location of the chime.

Thanks Teknoguy,

Great Idea! But the transformer is in the garage (basement) and the home theater is on the second floor - about as far apart in the house as they could be.

If I don't get any other suggestions, I will probably order from Amazon and give it a try.

It works!

Bought it from amazon, arrived yesterday. Installation took about 10 minutes (most of the time, getting my ladder out of the basement).

The sender unit is only a little bigger than a pack of cards, I wired it into the power of the my doorbell chime. There was enough space under the cover of the chime to mount the sender.

The receiver plugs into a wall outlet. I plugged an extra table lamp into the receiver. I will find something smaller, to replace the lamp in the HT, maybe a red LED night light.

You have the choice of alarm or no alarm, and if you plug a light into it, you have the choice of the lamp flashing 5 or 10 times.

In my installation, it works well. I am not sure of the max range, in my setup, the signal only needs to go about 20 feet. And there is nothing like a refrigerator inbetween the sender and the receiver.

That being said, it works well in my setup.

I had looked into these products, but for a completely different reason. I was in charge of my church's nursery, and we were looking for a very cheap solution to "signalling" a parent to come get their kid (such as for a diaper change, etc.) during the service. We looked into getting a "restaurant" style pager system, but it is ungodly expensive, and way out of our budget. So I started looking at these wireless doorbells thinking they may be a solution. There is even one that is battery powered that you can wear on your belt, but it is only aural, not visual (and we just need something that flashes, but is not disturbing to those around you). Plus the doorbells only reach about 75 to 100 feet.

bottom line, there is nothing out there that is simply a wireless signaller that can travel about 200 feet that gives a non-audible signal (whether a flashing light or a vibration) when a button is pushed. That's all we need! Yet there is no cheap solution out there, it seems.

Glad to hear your wireless door bell works!

I just moved the lamp and receiver to about 45 feet (+/-) away from the sender. At this point it is about works, but only about 3/4 of the time. Not a real scientific test, but I was curious on the range.

Why don't you just have the parents put their cell phones on vibrate and call them if they need to tend to their children. The caller ID would tell indicate that the call was from you, or the church number - that would be their signal during services to go to the nursery.

Not a bad idea. But believe it or not, not veryone has cell phones, and they don't bring them all the time, and a lot of times we get visitors that probably woulnd't know the cell phone rule. It would be nice to have something we could use consistently, and not have to rely on technology that may or may not work (our church is way out in the boonies, and people have complained about not having service out there as well...)

Being involved in the tech world, sometimes I forget that there are a lot of people that still do not have, or constantly carry a cell phone.

Good luck with your search for a solution.

Sorry this is getting off topic...

Steve, our church did the cell phone thing too. Ours has no signal and we are not in the boonies...

But for new parents there is a sign at the kids registration, and they must put their cell phone # down when they register their kids.

For those who don't have a cell, we have a select couple to call and they will search for the needed person. (small enough where everyone knows each other, and new faces stand out).

But our pastor has a rule, if he hears a phone because it isn't on vibrate, you owe him lunch...

Ok, back on target...
