I read this on Toshiba's EU site:
HD DVD discs containing high definition content at a field rate of 50Hz or a frame rate of 25Hz cannot be played on the HD-XE1 without a firmware update
http://www.toshibahddvd.co.uk/products/hd-xe1/key-features.cfm

What is this now? What resolution do these HD-DVDs and BluRaysold in Europe have?
Can somebody clarify what resolution are there available?
And another one. My TV is HD ready. If a BD or HDDVD movie is natural stored at 1080p24 what conversion is applied (provided that in the player I choose 720p output)?
Thanks

Most HD Movies are recorded on HD Disc at 24fps frame rate. The ability of the player to output 24Hz content to 50 or 60Hz will depend on the player, typically PAL region players will output to 50 Hz (by doubling frames, approx 48Hz) and NTSC region players will output at 60Hz (progressive or interlaced depending on the player) using telecine.
TV shows might be recorded at the native refresh rate of the country of origin (PAL=50Hz, NTSC=60Hz). Output will again depend on the player, but typically limited by region as well.

If your TV was purchased in a NTSC country and your player as well most probably the player will output 60Hz using telecine to convert the 24fps.
A few TVs I think already support directly 24fps. Not sure about players, I beleive some Blu-Ray players already do .
The PS3 only outputs 60Hz for now.

In a nutshell, try to buy a player and TV for the same region if you want to be on the safe side.
