View Full Version : is walmart phasing out HD DVD?
vassili 03-13-07, 11:55 PM went to my local walmart today. last time i was there was about a month ago, they had a healthy couple of dozen movies in hd dvd and bluray. today, all but 6 hd dvd titles remain (all were launch titles) and the bluray section has grown to about 6x as many titles....with alot of newer releases.
i doubt someone just came in and bought ALL but 6 titles on HD...as there were multiple copies of each title. are they getting rid of HD completely?
spinksjinx 03-13-07, 11:57 PM Hell I could never find them in all of the 3 walmart stores in my area. I did happen to find one Blu-Ray movie though in the PS3 game section.
Maxx_75 03-14-07, 12:00 AM I have so many Wal Marts around me that it isnt even funny and none of them have any HD DVD's or Blu-ray's. They have a few X-Mens in with the PS3's if you count that. They are just testing the market in diferent areas. They don't know what they are doing yet......

Interesting someone also reported yesterday that their local Bestbuy was taking HD-DVD off the shelves and only selling them online.
Are we starting to see the end of the format war?
Also an insider has posted elsewhere:

Wonder if he is talking about Bestbuy or Wal-mart or both?? It would be a crushing blow if they both stop carrying HD-DVD.
Rob Zuber 03-14-07, 12:09 AM I'm a big BD supporter, but I don't expect to see retailers pulling out yet. And these anecdotal stories are not very helpful because the sample isn't large enough. There will be wide variances from store to store and region to region.
GBFreek 03-14-07, 12:09 AM Not that the avg HD or BR customer shops Walmart - but no dist at Walmart is certainly 1 more nail in the coffin of HD DVD (if true)

A meaningless, rhetorical question, as we already know what you think.

And this is FUD, as he specifically refers to "one" retailer. Do you suppose that we're incapable of comprehending the difference between singular and plural syntax?
Both BD and HD seemed a bit too high market for Walmart IMO.
JadedRaverLA 03-14-07, 01:29 AM Well, my local Wal-mart initially supported both formats and had a decent selection. They got rid of HD DVDs months ago, and are now only carrying a small selection of Blu-ray, most of which are in the case with the PS3s. They also don't get new Blu-ray titles in until a week or two after the release.

He takes this thread's original post and adds it to this other post and gets that both could be getting ready to pull HD DVD. I would not be surprised if this happens at some point, but I would be surprised if it happens before summer.

Most HD DVD buyers are purchasing discs from online retailers.
Assayer 03-14-07, 07:03 AM My experience at my local Walmart yesterday was similar to the OP. They had about 3x BD to HD DVD. My take was not that they were intentionally phasing it out, but rather that they were stocking the newer titles as released and as we all know, BD has been releasing more over the last two months. This is probably more dependent on release calenders than anything.
khwiggins2 03-14-07, 09:20 AM Wal-Mart caters to more cost conscientious customers. They probably carry blu-ray movies because thats all they can sell for the PS3 due to lack of games. When hd-dvd and blu-ray players drop in price, you'll start seeing more movies available. Most likely hd-dvd first as they are much more likely than blu-ray to drop prices into the Wal-Mart range.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Move along, nothing to see here.
Yet another post in the long line of "I visited <insert store name here>" threads, that seem to also contain "inside information"
hd nOOb 03-14-07, 09:33 AM I hope the Chinnese can come in at $199.99 for their HD DVD oferings.

We are already seeing it in Australia with a lot of the retailers going Blu-ray only. We are also kinda seeing it with the Blockbusters in the UK stocking Blu-ray only. I wouldn’t be surprised to see retailers in the USA start to pick a winner sooner than later.

They will start "un-picking" the "winner" as soon as the HD-DVD flow starts again...

What flow? You must mean the Universal trickle of movies.
We know The Jerk is going to sell a lot of players :p

Hi Bob,
Awaiting a response from another online retailer in the UK regarding their position with hd-dvd. They stated in a phone discussion that they would not be stocking hd-dvd, but are stocking Blu Ray. As soon as I get the response I will forward it to Plazman for verification purposes, if of course he agrees.?
The news that Blockbuster UK are undecided if they will stock hd-dvd is good news for Blu Ray.
Blockbuster UK has 700 stores and a membership of 5 million, nice to think that from the 23rd March visitors to the stores will notice Blu Ray disc ONLY instore.

yeah we all know about the retailer in australia that is "bluray only" yet yesterday someone posted pics of of hddvds being sold in this so called "bluray only" store

Oh thats right, that current killer release list from BD is better. Get your copy of meatballs! :D

They sell Xbox add-ons, NOT hd-dvd stand-alone players.

Yep. and Casino Royale, Rocky Balboa, Eragon, Layer Cake, The Pursuit of Happyness, Big Fish, Hoosiers, Finding Neverland, Warriors of Heaven & Earth, From Hell, Stranger Than Fiction, The Getaway, March of the Penguins, King Arthur, Volver, Dog Day Afternoon, The Queen, Deja Vu, Night at the Museum, Donnie Brasco, Apocalypto, POTC 1+2, Spiderman 1,2,3 and the Grudge 2. Yeah none of thoes movies are worth buying.
Adam Tyner 03-14-07, 11:15 AM The Wal-Mart down the road from me had a few HD DVDs -- Hollywoodland, World Trade Center, V for Vendetta, and I think that may have been it -- with closer to a dozen Blu-ray releases.
They used to be pretty good about stocking new releases in both formats, but not so much anymore.
TheLoveone 03-14-07, 11:21 AM The OP isn't alone. Check out this post on TheDVDWars forum:
"Wow, that would be huge! And about two weeks away? My wife and I were at the local walmart today buying diapers, and they had a big cardboard stand full of BD, and the carboard stand was a BD stand, not just one of those black wal-mart ones! I was floored. There wasn't one hddvd movie to be found! This might just be my store, but either way I think it's a sign of the future. Especially when you look at their dvd players, which i did for fun, and over 75% of the dvd players are Funai brands! All I can say is good luck Hd-DVD!"

I don't know about The Jerk selling a lot of players, but I know about another one wishing BR sells a lot of players.

Universal may have movies but Blu-ray has the quality movies. That recent movie release list from Universal was an absolute joke.

Not at all, just responding to two different posts.
For me, what do I care? I own a PS3 as well. I just like to attack all the FUD BS.

Of course you would say that!
I swear, Universal could put out every HOT movie they ever made, and BD fans would dismiss the list, so stop the BS. If Universal went BD, BD fans would be buying the heck out of Universal movies. They wont admit it now, because to them Universal=Evil HDDVD supporter.
Also, it is foolish to dismiss older movies. Are we all about POTC,Casino Royal? I went and bought Casino for my PS3, great movie, but I also yearn for the older stuff. Cant tell me Jurassic Park, Scarface,Jaws, back to the Future, etc. etc. would not tempt you.
jon smith 03-14-07, 02:12 PM It's good to know the US AV forums are full of as much crap as the ones in the UK. I was starting to get worried.
It's also good to see some of the UK guys bringing their crap over here, it's not enough to just rubbish one forum. Good work guys.
majortom 03-14-07, 02:45 PM I swear, Universal could put out every HOT movie they ever made, and BD fans would dismiss the list, so stop the BS.
There are a few Universal titles that I would like. Accepted tops my list. I will probably buy Brokeback Mountain in the UK before they can do a U.S. release. There are several other titles I would buy, none are important enough for me to spend money on an HD DVD player, thus prolonging this conflict.

I do not think they are evil, just misguided (or being paid for their efforts).

I like older films and will be happy to have them once they are available. Unfortunately, they are not a huge drive of player sales among mainstream adopters.
Cant tell me Jurassic Park, Scarface,Jaws, back to the Future, etc. etc. would not tempt you.
Just as you cannot tell me a release date for any of those films on HD DVD. No major Spielberg film will be released until this conflict is over and market penetration has increased substantially.

Meatpopsicle 03-14-07, 02:48 PM Interesting. My local wal-marts carry both formats. Yet most of their HD DVD's are usually sold out (lots of empty spaces where the sticker says they belong.) While bluray is usually fully stocked. This has the appearance of one selling better than the other.
Also, oddly enough, my circuit city has a nice selection of hd-dvd's in their specialty movie section. But I have yet to see any bluray movies at all there. If they are there, I don't know where they are.

While bluray is usually fully stocked. This has the appearance of one selling better than the other.Or, they've been getting more demand for Blu-ray and thus order more stock. Your average consumer doesn't see empty space and think "that's more popular", they think "that's not available".

Wait a sec, not so fast.
BD fans are always quick to announce content the second it hits the movie screen. So if you can tell me the release date of Spiderman 3, by all means, you have the floor :D In fact, this very thread someone mentioned films including SM 3.
So, I found it only fair to include strong contenders for future content. So, the question begs, why is it ok for BD fans to rub HDDVD fans face with releases like Spiderman 3, the current oscar crop, etc. but when HDDVD fans do it, they get "Give me a release date, I dont beleive it"
Goldblum 03-14-07, 04:43 PM Oh thats right, that current killer release list from BD is better. Get your copy of meatballs! :D
Casino Royale? As in, now in Amazon's top ten. :D

and your point? I have a copy, I own a PS3 :D
P.S. The same Amazon BD fans were ripping apart when it was not going a certain way :D
podwich 03-14-07, 04:49 PM I doubt you can draw a valid conclusion from your local Walmarts. For example, out of three Walmarts near me, two carry equal numbers of HD DVD and BD (about 12 movies each) and the third has neither. For the Best Buy stores near me, one has equal numbers of HD DVD and BD while the other has almost double the number of HD DVD over BD. It just varies greatly among stores.
Adam Tyner 03-14-07, 06:11 PM I will probably buy Brokeback Mountain in the UK before they can do a U.S. release. There's been a U.S. release out for a while now.

He's talking about on Blu-ray.
Then again, dont think I would brag about Brokeback anything :D
Well I just visited FutureShop in Broadway[Vancouver] a couple of days ago and I can't find an HD-DVD player demo. All they have running are the Blu-Ray players. Already have a PS3 and Blu-Ray movies but been looking into getting a HD-Dvd players as some of my favorite movies are on it. Plus I already have 6HD -DVD movies waiting. =o(

1............................maybe 2. Grudge 2?????? Are you kidding? Content numbers mean nothing unless you are talking about QUALITY content!
theforce8686 03-14-07, 11:54 PM Here in the 3 Daytona Beach Area Walmarts they have slots for 28 High Def movies and they have BD in 22 of them. They have been comstantly updating while the 6 HD slots still include Tomb Raider, Batman, and WTC. The Casino Royales were sold out in 15 minutes as there now people who are there consistently every tuesday morning (me included) waiting for the new releases.
Well for "moving along" you stick around quite a long time. Nervous?
Apparently you missed the best post of the thread?
Rusty James 03-15-07, 10:21 AM Anyone savvy enough to be a regular on these forums and truly, genuinely believes that HD-DVD will disappear or be phased out in 3-4 months is either an idiot or a troll.

I'm pretty sure Paidgeek, who is a Sony Pictures insider, has said SpiderMan 3 is in the pipeline.
Timothy Ramzyk 03-15-07, 12:11 PM Walmarts' passing out HD DVD? Wow I'm off to Walmart! :D
plasmalover 03-15-07, 01:33 PM My local CC has moved their HDDVD rack into the DVD racks while there is a prominent rack in the middle of isle for Blu-ray only. That might be a sign that they are just phasing out their HDDVD stock
george king 03-15-07, 01:40 PM plasmalover,
why would they phase out their stock when they just started selling the movies and players.
I will add another completely worthless anecdote - the local CC here has two prominent displays one for BD and one for HD.
There seem to be more off-topic posts than on-topic posts for this thread.
And you know what that means.
