Hello everyone! Well I finally stepped into the HDTV realm, I received my Hannspree 37" LCD today (well yesterday now, lol) and its awesome. My 360 games look incredible, and even now as I'm type I'm still stunned (for the price it was right for me).

Today I picked up my HD-DVR from Comcast (about 10 miles outside of Detroit), I believe its the newer one, has HDMI, SATA, Firewire, etc....Well I hooked it up fine, and eventually was able to view channels. I went to some of the HD channels and was impressed but upset at the same time, all the HD channels have many artifacts in them, are grainy, and have a lot of scan lines. I hooked my cable line up to the QAM tuner, and wow did LOST look great tonight, way better then that through on the Comcast box via the HDMI (switched between commercials). However I need this to work well with the HDMI on the Comcast box, after all thats why I'm paying for it, to have all the other HD channels. The non HD channels looked horrid with the Comcast box, at least using my tuner I could stretch the picture and it looked decent. Does anyone have any tips?

I called Comcast, they told me to try it with the component cables, I did and while it did look better the entire picture lacked any red, all of my connections are secure (and matching correctly). I'm sure its not the TV as I hooked it up to my 360 again via component and everything was perfect.

Does anyone think it could be the box or something else on Comcasts line?

I also tried my friends cable amplifier, helped when using the QAM tuner but no effect with the box.

Thanks!

Maybe the STB needs an initial setup for a 1080i output (for a 16:9 display). If it hasn't been set, posts or someone in your local forum thread should have tips on how to access initial STB setup; or, check FAQ-type threads in the HD recorders forum. True 16:9 material, mostly during the evening hours for the major networks, will fill the screen. But they'll be lots of 4:3 material, and zooming or stretching it, if the STB has that ability, will soften the image and add a little noise as well as distort human figures (too 'plump'). After you're sure the STB is delivering true 1080i, downconverted by your display to your LCD resolution, it might be worthwhile tinkering with the STB settings, such as testing whether adding 480p output, will make SD 480i channels look better on your display. -- John

Thanks for your response John, your right it needed to be set to 1080i. The Comcast tech changed the option in the boxes advance settings and it now looks much better. I also rearranged my seating area so that I'm 8-10 feet away from the TV, looks much better now.
