I have a Samsung LNR 408-D LCD TV. I have an HD DVR connected to it. I just got Directv, but I had the same problem when I had digital cable.

When the TV has been off for awhile, when I use the Universal remote to turn it and the HD DVR on, only the volume buttons will work. The "Guide" buttons, etc. don't work. After about 2-4 minutes, all of the buttons work, but they don't seem to have the same response level as my other normal TV's.

If I push the buttons on the DVR itself, the "Guide" will appear, etc. I had the problem with my cable HD DVR as well.

Neither Directv nor Samsung have heard of this.

Is the DirecTV DVR...assuming the HR-20...in the line of site? Or off in the distance with a IR repeater or RF eye?

It's in the line of site. It's about 8 - 10 feet away with no obstructions.

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but i've seen multiple reports on AVS of various Flat Panel LCD TVs "blinding" the remote control, probably by giving off so much light that it overwhelms the IR LED on the remote.

Maybe try turning the backlight way down and see if the remote starts to work properly?

Do you have any other equipment hooked up? If not than it looks like the TV control is working fine since the volume control (which I'm assuming is of the TV speakers) seems to be working which means that the issue is that the DTV receiver is not working which explains why the other commands like "Guide" aren't working.

Is the DTV receiver mounted directly abov or below the TV. Can you move the receiver further away from the TV and see if it has the same problems. Since you report the same problem with the DTV receiver and the cable box it must be an IR issue where the LCD is "blinding" or overloading the box at startup.

I have a Samsung LNR-409D with the DirecTV HR20 DVR and I was just troubleshooting a similar problem. My remote would work for about 30 seconds after turning on the TV but then it stopped working. I threw a blanket over the screen and the remote magically started working again. I was adjusting the picture a few days ago, so I went back to the picture menu for the TV and discovered that the "Brightness Sensor" was turned on. I turned it off and that solved the problem!
