I recently bought an EyeTV Hybrid to use with my iMac Core Duo. I live in Houston and have Time Warner Digital Cable, but I'm close enough in town that a powered VHF/UHF antenna pulls in the local HD channels well enough (I guess).
I want to be able to record both HD and the analog cable (I'd love to be able to record digital cable, but I think it's impossible). I wasn't paying enough attention to check if the Hybrid would receive clear QAM, and it won't, so I have to rely on OTA HD if I want that.
Here's my problem - since I want to be able to record both OTA HD and analog cable, I have to use 2 sources and there is only one coax jack on the Hybrid. I was reading on the Elgato FAQ and they suggested I try a splitter. I bought a splitter with 3 plugs. 1 plug is attached to the Hybrid, 1 to the cable and 1 to the powered antenna. I am able to tune channels on both the cable and the OTA antenna. What I am not able to do is this ... if I am watching a program with the antenna and I switch to analog cable, I get a lot of interference on the line and I have to power down the antenna to clear it up, then it's fine. So what I can't do is automate recordings, since someone has to be there to manually flip a switch to change from a HD recording to an analog cable recording.
Sorry to be so long winded, here's my question, is there a way to rig this up to avoid having the antenna interfere with the analog cable. I read something somewhere about an antenna combiner in place of a splitter, so as to isolate them, but I don't know if that would work. I'm wondering if I should have held out for the Miglia TVMini HD+, which does both analog, OTA, and Clear QAM, especially since my HD reception is a LITTLE spotty.
Let me know what you think, thanks for the help.
