Yesterday, while placing a movie in my rental que a warning poped up informing me that I had placed a a blu ray title in my que and informing me that I needed a blu ray player to play the disk. I hope this is really not happening (i.e. people renting the movies thinking they will work in a standard DVD player)?

If people are renting blu ray or HD-DVD movies without understanding that you can't play these on standard DVD players, then the businesses marketing these formats aren't doing a very good job!

Opinions?

I wouldn't draw that conclusion. Some people aren't particularly intelligent and/or informed and retailers know this.

probably a few did this, so the warning was placed...you see the same warning in all blu-ray disc packages....

it's annoying when this warning suddenly pops up after you've already rented a dozen or so blu ray discs from them. what the hell do they think i've been doing with them?

well they certainly dont want you to sue them for not reminding you. this is why we have "wet floor signs". if its raining out you, are not smart enough to know the floor may be slippery with your wet feet and you could fall.

Society as a whole are so stupid and so sue happy that we now have signs and warnings for everything. Look even your cup of hot coffee tells you that "warning contents are hot." so you should be thankful that society is looking out for its dummies.

Oh and just so you know Dont drink draino it is poisonous.

Is it really that annoying? Doesn't it only take a quick click to dismiss the pop up?

Is there anything that doesn't warrant a complaint?

I'll tell ya' though, on those cases where I have to dig my fingers into that little flip up thingee, well, I just about have a seizure.

To answer the original question, yes.. people are stupid. Even when you buy BD discs in the store, it's got a little sticker that says that it requires a Blu-ray player.

You have to remember that the vast majority of DVD viewers have no idea what high-definition is, much less how it works. I would imagine there were a large number of complaints from DVD owners who couldn't play HD movies, blaming Blockbuster for not having a warning, and demanding a refund of the rental fee. Hence, the warning. That way, when people complain, Blockbuster can just say "you're stupid" and they don't have to refund them.

Let's just hope they are being cautious...

Same thing happened to me, some shmucks must be renting blu-ray movies and having them not play on their dvd players.

The annoying thing is that it asks you every time you put a BD or HD DVD even after you have answered previously.

My blockbuster rents PS3 games but not BD movies, that bothers me. I could see not carrying BD movies because they think no one has players, but if people have PS3s...

Anyway, to the OP, maybe this means the people who actually want BD movies and have BD players will be able to get them faster. Stop the unwashed masses delaying our HD goodness.

How many people called tech support when CD drives first became standard in new PCs to complain that their "cup holders" were broken?

People are dumb and lawyers will sue anyone with money.

Just be glad that you'll get your HD movies faster rather than having copies get sent to people who can't even watch them.

The following is a true story...

based on actual events...

I was at Blockbuster the other day and I asked the lady if they will ever carry Blu Rays for rentals. She said probably not and besides you need a hi def player for those. I was like no ****! Really...I did not know that. Could have been me but I thought it was a dead giveaway that I had a high def player when I was renting a PS3 game???

that aint a story of dumbness. this is a story of dumbness. A tenant called me up and said that there was no power in the building. i arrived with my tools expecting a main switch to be burned up or something else drastic. i got to her office sutie and first noticed the emergency lights were on so that was a good thing. then i noticed the computer screens were running the screen savers. ok so we may have lost a phase. not to bad yet. I found the woman and she told me there was no power that the lights were not on. i went to the hallway light switch and flipped it on expecting it to not turn on and guess what... the lights came on. the lady appologized and said that every day when she came in the lights were on so she thought there wasnt any power.

That my friend is a dummy story. I have many many more which has led me to believe that the human race as a whole is doomed to dumness. however i may be lucky and it may be contained in the U.S. in which case all i have to do is move. i dont think i can take another 20 years of this dumbness.

People on this forum might not but your average person might.
My mom one time rented some HD-DVD's in her Blockbuster queue got them home and then called me to ask why they wouldn't play. In her mind she thought "I've got an HDTV I should be able to rent an HD-DVD" she didn't know there was a difference or that there even were other formats. This was in late summer 06 though before I got into the HD formats and educated her.

In many cases I don't think it's dumb people rather they are simply too busy, preoccupied, and perhaps not as involved in your peculiar passion to be so aware of the obvious. Somehow I think if we were to visit a few forums of different interests we just might be embarrassing ourselves rather quickly.

I use to think that too. it is just the way my mother would make excuses for people. there was always a reason.

Well behold the dumbness of the average american! just walk around and watch people. you will witness it first hand. there are no excuses left. I have used them all up. People are just dumb.

there seems to be another example of dumb people needed here.
I have a garage at work. You know what they are right? the things you park your car in that go down below buildings and maybe above ground at malls and such? well to go on with the story... I have a garage at work and there are bars painted bright yellow that state 6'10" clearence on them. well a guy driving a u-haul truck tried to park it in the garage. Shall i go on? ok when the truck stopped because the top of the truck was hitting the precast on the garage what do you think he did? he gave it more gas. i approached him and you know what he said? He thought the dip in the asphalt was stopping the truck from moving forward. I said ok... but did you know you just opened up the top of the truck like a sardine can? he said he didnt care as that is why he has insurance.

Do we need more dumb people stories? or can we just agree that the vast majority of the U.S. population is as dumb as a box of rocks?

Okay...my intent was not to suggest that people are generally stupid. I for one do not believe that to be true! They are merely "uninformed."

However, if the majority of people are "uninformed," then the marketing/ advertising for the high def formats needs to reach the "uninformed." Otherwise, they (the uninformed) will continue renting BR disks that won't play in their players.

Nice sugar coating. "uninformed" i like that. You have a big heart. Im happy for you. You seem to be also forgiving. Thats a good trait. So your a nice person. That is good.

I guess i need another example. three windows were busted out at the building i work at. While out there picking up the glass this question was asked. "Are you going to put in new windows?" Well i thought here we go. the answer to the question was "Nope. Im gonna glue all these little pieces back together and put it back in."

The "uninformed" person did not understand the fact that you have to replace a broken window with an unbroken one. So i guess he had never been to the broken window class that was set up by the glass company on what to do when a window was broken.

come on i know you wanna join the club. I have more examples if you still doubt.

Just for the record.....I am pretty sure the current Simon - Binet IQ scale by definition uses a score of 100 for the average person. That is how this scale is designed......

People dumb.

It's that simple and so are they.

Why aren't side impact airbags standard on every car?
Why is their a warning screen on the OEM Nav System in my car that tells me to obey traffic laws?
Why are their "don't use near water" symbols and warnings on heaters and curling irons?
Why does every damn parking structure in California have a proposition 65 warning about the presence of carcinogens that we all know cars emit?

Because...
Yes you guessed it...

People dumb.

If it makes you feel any better, imagine what they're going through with HD DVDs. :P
