First I will tell u my set up. I have a B&K AVR 507 running 7 MB Quart speakers, 1 center channel, 2 floor standing and 4 bookshelfs. I have a Directv HD DVR. A Sony 9000ES DVD player, Mitsubishi 65" rear projection tv. Xbox 360 with the HD DVD addon. A klipsch 15" sub I think its the RSW 15. All this equiptment was plugged into a Monster Cable HTS5000 MKII line conditioner/surge protector. A couple of weeks ago the surge protector blew up sent it to monster and am getting the new 5100 cause it was under warrenty. My question is am I overloading the Monster surge protector or my circuit. I am puzzeled on why it went bad. Its all on its own 15amp breaker. Has nevere triped the breaker. At the time the HTS5000 was sharing a set of outlets with a refrigerator but I have sinse put it on its own. Should I upgrade my circuit to 12 gauge wire with a 20amp fuse? Should I have 2 20 amp breakers? I want to get maximum performace out of my equiptment. The specs on the B&K receiver says it draws 10 amps add that with all the other equiptment and the sub. I have to be close if not over my 80% of amprege wich would be 12 amps. What sugestions would anybody have. Would I be overloading my Monster Cable HTS5100 MKII when it arives next week? Should I have 2 of them? Should My sub be on its own breaker? any advice will be helpful. Thanks

You should ask Monster (or look in the manual) as to what the power draw rating for the conditioner is. Just because you put it on a 15/20 amp circuit doesn’t mean it is capable of those loads.

As to the circuit itself, you should be able to find wattage ratings for all of your equipment. Divide the wattage by 120V to yield the amperage (assuming you are in the US). For example, the RSW-15 rates it’s max RMS wattage as 650. 650W/120V = 5.41 A. If your receiver was drawing a full 10 amps while the sub was maxing out, that could overload your circuit. Based on that, I’d probably consider upgrading the circuit or just adding a second circuit to the area.

Thanks for the reply. Finnaly someone responded. The circuit has never triped. The Monster Cable HTS 5000 MK II was rated at 1600watts continous. Im getting the 5100 now the newer up do date version. Would it help my equiptment any if I upgraded to 12gauge 20amp circuit?
Thats what has me baffeled is that the circuit has never tripped. So maybee im ok or over the last 3 years the load on the 5000 just couldn't handel it or I was hit with a surge.
