Well Sony and Blu-ray have done it again!! Tonight I watched Rocky Balboa and it was simply another wonderful transer and excelled in audio quality as well. I would place this overall transfer in the same park as The Prestige and the sound was AMAZING!! Did I also mention this was a very good movie as well? It had a very nice storyline and brought the Rocky series to a very respectful end. I will have a more complete review later.

Yeah it was a pretty good movie. I didn't like the fight scene at the end though. It felt like it was just tacked on and it really didn't have the punch of the fight scenes in previous Rocky movies but the rest that just showed Rocky in his current life was great. I loved that he ended up getting with the woman that was the girl from the street corner in the first Rocky movie. I checked out the original on Blu-Ray just to remember those scenes where Rocky was busting her butt for hanging out with the rift raft.

I wish they would start giving regular inserts with movie material instead of the Blu-Ray pimping inserts(same goes for HD-DVD).

Rocky Balboa has the film grain intact, The prestige is filtered and softened.

This is surely the best BD I've seen yet.

Can't wait for this one.

Though if I may nitpick for a moment: GOD Sony, your disc art is so BORRRRING.

At least the movie title text is different for each disc.

1- At least there's SOME artwork :) .

2- I hope to GOD that they don't do this to Spider-man...

If the video quality is as good as The Prestinge I'd be happy. I wasn't expecting it from this title because I think it looked very gritty in the theaters.

Are there no Black bars on this...or do I need to tinker with my setup, cause my screen was full......???

Thanks

Rocky Balboa's aspect ratio is 1.85:1.

Thanks Greg....1.85 - 1 .....these movies are close enough to the dimensions of the TV so there are no black bars????

Most TVs have a tiny amount of overscan, which will make 1.85:1 movies appear to have no black bars.

Not to be a wise-guy, but that dude doesn't know WHAT he's talking about...

"Thee look of the film is very similar to the rest of the series, giving it that gritty 80’s look." Gritty 80's look? First of all the first 2 films were shot in the 70's and actually even though I liked the way RB looked, it actually looks NOTHING like the other Rocky films. This has that manipulated IP with the slightly blown out contrast and blue tinted look. The original films are MUCH more naturalistic looking. This is much more stylized looking...

(edited for Dave boo boo...)

but whatever....

"Then there’s the majority of the movie (bar the last 30 minutes in Vegas) which offers a great picture, but is shot to give you a very gritty 80’s documentary-style look, that blends in perfectly with the first movie."
Huh..?!?!? The majority of the fight scene is shot on HDVideo, looks nothing like film and isn't gritty at all. It actually looks like ESPN HD, just with a lesser frame rate.

but whatever....

Um, he did say "bar the last 30 minutes in Vegas" about looking very gritty. So, he already qualified that he wasn't talking about the fight scene. So, what's the problem?

bassmonkee, you're right, I read it wrong.
But still it looks NOTHING like the earlier Rocky films (non video part..)
