Big Fish review is up on HDD. Ken Brown gave it a 5 MQ, 4.5 PQ, and 5 AQ. This is one of my favorite Tim Burton movies. I am so glad Sony did its justice. Woot!

I'll pick it up, and BD50/Mpeg2 sounds nice, but I just can't trust this guy's reviews.

everything's not perfect -- grain levels occasionally differ from shot-to-shot within the same scene

there are also three rare moments of nearly imperceptible noise

Then still in the PQ section he follows up with:
'Big Fish' easily trumps Burton's other films that have been released on Blu-ray or HD DVD.

How does he figure?! Corpse Bride is an amazing transfer and HighDefDigest had no complaints!

Corpse Bride:
I was also impressed by how three-dimensional the image appears. I don't recall a single shot ever looking anything less that eye-popping, and the transfer does not suffer from any inconsistencies in sharpness -- which is rather surprising
compression artifacts are also not an issue.
'Corpse Bride' looks nothing but clean and smooth
I was never distracted once by any apparent pixelization or posterization.

So how exactly does Big Fish "trump" Corpse Bride?

I still look forward to Big Fish immensely, but A/V reviewers really need to be more honest with their statements.

My guess is that it looks better. I don't disagree with that statement either. I watched BF today, and though I only watched corpse bride once on BD (didn't purchase) it's definitely not noticeably better than Big Fish.

Isn't this review written by Kenneth Brown, not Peter Bracke?

Big Fish better PQ than Corpse Bride?

I don't bloody think so.

The master for the 35mm prints was grain filtered. Is the master for the HD as well?

If I were a reviewer, I probably wouldn't compare a director's live action work to an animated feature, either.

Don't let semantics get in the way of the substance of a review. They are all subjective and deal with the time/day that the person wrote that review. It's fairly easy to play "gotcha!" with written word reviews.

If you want to get further into semantics he may not be referencing 'Corpse Bride' at all since Burton didn't direct that film.

Why exactly is Sony dropping all the extras except for the commentary when it's a dual layer disc?

I'm hoping Peter Bracke got fired. I like this new guy.

Isn't it obvious?

Great question. This is another disc that didn't fully use that 50gig of space.

Big Fish is a VERY nice title from Sony... Here's my take on it:

I feel the opposite. The new guy is inconsistent & a bit too generous overall. Bracke is a lot better, even if I don't agree w/him 40% of the time. At least I know where he's coming from & can expect consistency.

I liked Mr. Bracke as well. His were the first reviews I looked at whenever a new title came out, and 9 times out of 10 after seeing the title he reviewed, I agreed with much of what he said. I, for one, hope he's not gone.

Agreed. This Kenneth Brown guy is either way too generous or way too critical. And I totally disagree with the video score. Big Fish is not only soft but also severely lacking in contrast. I think Kris Deering's score of 3.5 is much more accurate.

I would have bought BF today, but my Best Buy doesn't seem to like to sell catalog releases on either HD format.

Anyone having trouble with the menus on this disc? First, this disc takes about as twice as long to load compared to any other Blu-Ray disc that I have. I'm using the BD-P1000 and after the initial loading "thinking dots" from the player came up and went away a screen pop up saying "Loading Big Fish." It took probably 15 additional seconds to load the disc. Then when I got to the menu it was very unresponsive. It would take a second or two for the menu to move to what I was selecting. Also, the main selections (like play movie, scenes, special features) seemed to be reversed like, you hit the right arrow button but the menu moves left. The movie plays fine which is all that really matters but the menu was a pain to navigate. The in movie pop up menu worked better but was still a little sluggish moving. It also would let me navigate back to the main menu once I started the movie without hitting stop first. I've only had this player since Friday and I know this player has some compatibility problems but this is the first BD I have had any problems with (out of the 10 I own). Just wandering if anyone else experienced any of this.

The movie itself looks good but, not as goods as the review lead me to believe. Could have been intentional by the filmmakers but, it seemed a little soft to me. Casino Royale, X-Men 3 and Fantastic 4 look better to me.

I just finished watching Big Fish and I thought it looked pretty good. You guys should give these reviewers a free pass on stylized films like this one. It's not an easy disc to judge. Reviewers are gonna be spread like a load of shotgun pellets headed in the direction of a duck on a film like this.

I liked this movie very much, possibly one of my favorite Tim Burton movies. The picture was very soft in many places, but I think this may have been intentional to give that dreamy look to the film. However, there is no way that this has better PQ than Corpse Bride.
