I have a lot of light coming into my HT room in my basement. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive solutions to blackout the room completely with readily available drapes or curtains from places like home depot, Sears, BB&B etc...I would appreciate a link to the product if possible. Thanks.

These are good for adding to existing drapes:

Roc-Lon Blackout Drapery Liner (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2432275)

Thanks for the link. I just moved to a new house. No drapes. Just one bare window.

I had a room darkening roller blind from Walmart that was really effective. It wasn't very pretty, but did the trick, and was super cheap. I think you can get similar blinds at other stores too.

Does the blackout solution need to be readily removable? If not, you can just wedge styrofoam or cardboard wrapped in a sheet to block out most if not all of the incoming light.

The basement has french door in addition to a window.

I just bought some curtains at Walmart for about $12 per panel. They are "Faux Suede" and the color is "Black Soot".

Kind of like this (http://www.amazon.com/Chamois-Suede-84-Inch-Curtain-2-Pack/dp/B0007LJNHS).

I haven't tried them on the windows during the day light yet, but will report back on their performance. Just holding them in front of my face in the kitchen, toward the track lighting, I could only barely see the point from where the light originated. Everything else was just curtain.

I am pleased to report that the cheap curtains sufficiently, for my setup, block out the light. We have a walk-out basement with 2 windows and a door in the theater space. The cheap curtains from Walmart block out 90% of the light coming through the windows. You can still see the gaps in the blinds through the curtains, but everything in the room goes to black. All you can make out is the shapes of the furniture, and that is after your eyes adjust.

Glad to hear that. I am going to check that out this weekend. I am surprised though that you don't have any light spill from the sides. How do you solve that one? Which aisle do you find the curtains at Wal-Mart?

My windows are 34" wide and the curtains are 54" wide. So there is plenty of overlap for light spill. I also bought a curtain rod that is 48" long so that my curtains extend past the window opening. They were in an aisle near furniture and had both the rods and curtains. They had a 12" sample hanging at the top of the aisle of the different curtains. Walmart had multiple colors of the same "Faux Suede" curtains.
