View Full Version : What have you sacrificed for this hobby?

Not necessarily a smaller house or average car, but what sacrifices in disposable income have you made? For my 60" DLP 5 years ago when it was $4K, for a little while I gave up golf and dining out.

And not hookers or feeding your kids either :)

Nothing, I am just on the 3 year theatre plan... =(.

One day i would start a construction thread, but it's sad the amount of time I get to work
on it, so I think everyone would fall a sleep.

For me it has been time, money and energy. Nothing like a full basement finish to sap all of them. But I still have not missed ANY of my kids sporting events due to the basement work nor have I avoided them at all. I actually am getting help from my 17 and 12 y.o. boys which has helped a lot in the past few weeks. My wife is still happy so I guess it is all working out as planned.

Oh, I also sacrificed brain cells on the beer I needed to recover from a hard weekends work. :D

I gave up lots of time and other, possibly less sane hobbies than this one. I also gave up watching anything on a TV larger than 32 inches for at least a year and a half now.

Okay, who'll be the first to answer, "My marriage" :D

I just completed the "3 year plan" in the theater.
Personally, I gave up some time with my boys. I just couldn't get them to raise a hammer or mudding knife which, thinking about it, probably saved me a trip to the emergency room.
We're making up for it now by having family nights in the theater.

Ditto here, so far. Rather than spend time actually watching movies, TV, or reading a book I spend it "playing in the basement", as I refer to it.

My wife is very supportive (putting up with $$ spent, air compressor and framing nailer running in the basement), but for the sake of the marriage she doesn't try to help out. :)

Aside from time, protesting sweat glands and muscles, I'd say nights out at the restaurant with my wife and clothes. Though date night out has been replaced by movie night in. It's a lot cheaper and has made it worthwhile.

But, need we not forget what we have gained !!

Let's see...
A new compressor
A new framing nailer
A little giant ladder system =)
A new router
a new finish nailer

Soon to get...
Table saw =)

Oh and the wife and kids still love me I think... Tho I admit the wife thinks im nutz...
But thats ok, because I was nutz long before we got married.

I guess this means that we need to add "sanity" as one of the things lost of given up during the process...

Oh yeah, I was short on sanity before I started the climb up Mt Everest know as dedicated theater room building, now I have none at all. The places in my brain that held my sanity were replaced by new sensory pathways - the "black level" lobe, the "room modes" lobe, the "comb filtering" lobe, the D65 lobe, etc....

I gave up golf as well to save time and money. I spend most of my free time around the house messing around in the basement. Oh, my son started playing baseball as well.

I started out with a flurry, riser built and carpeted, poster box up, projector and audio installed, temporary sceen in place.

Then, I committed one of the cardinal sins in theater projects. I ordered and received my Berkline recliners and put them in place. Needless to say, my "temporary" setup has hung around too long. Progress has come to a halt.

Nothing.

Almost all of my work was done either after my wife and son were asleep or when I was "working" from home and they were gone. My son was only 1 at the time and I had night duty, so would have been up doing nothing anyway.

Had the money earmarked, so didn't really give up anything financially either (and finished under budget too).

Actually not too much (so far). Paying cash for everything, only work on the theater when the family isn't home or is doing something else. As for the return, I expect it to be 10 fold when we start having a family or friends movie night.

My sanity.

Chris,

My wife was quick to point out that with the fabric walls and acoustics it looks like I am building a padded cell. Perhaps a nice white starched straight jacket will be in order.

Don't think we have sacrificed anything - at least not long term. Everything is just a matter of priorities. For us, the new dining room set and landscaping will happen next year or the year after. We live in the northwest, hence rain for many months. This is a great indoor project. Seems like its all on the plus side. We learn from every project (me and the kids), its a cool upgrade to the house, its time with family & friends, the wifey is happy that I'm not running the streets (except for those trips to HD of course), and there is budget for more TOOLS! Life is good.

Cheers,

Curt

I sold my cherished and sacred power amplifier on ebay this week to reimburse the cost of my new LCD. 29 years of service, now off to a new owner...
