View Full Version : Donnie Darko please...... ahartig 03-20-07, 02:06 PM how amazing would this movie by on bluray SXRDMan 03-20-07, 02:11 PM I would REALLY like to see it as well in HD, not sure how good it would look but here's hoping! Jiffylush 03-20-07, 02:51 PM I like the director's cut because of INXS, but that is about it. This would be a must buy for me either way. sillysam 03-20-07, 03:11 PM how amazing would this movie by on bluray I'm curious as to the value of these kinds of threads. I see them all the time, asking when some movie will be out or requesting some movie on BD or HD DVD. Then the responses are all the same and then the thread dies. Are their studio representatives on the forum who will respond to these requests? Is there a designated forum member who will communicate with the studios regarding these requests? Will these posts actually have an iota of value in influencing what does and doesn't get released and when some movie will be released? Just curious. But what in the world is the reason for these threads? Or is it just purely a social thing with nothing to do with anything else? Dave Mack 03-20-07, 03:32 PM the dp used I believe a weird choice of film stock. One meant for I think VERY, VERY low light shooting but he used it for the whole film including all the many numerous full daylight exteriors which gives it a very odd look, kinda murky and soft with a flattened contrast. While I'm sure the BD will look alot better than the DVD, it's not going to ever look as good as say one of these new "3-d POP titles" many clamor for. But yes, let's have it. I'd LOVE to have both versions but knowing FOX, that's highly doubtful. :) d Adam_ME 03-20-07, 03:35 PM It looked like ass on both SD-DVD and Showtime HD, so I'm not holding out hope on the Blu-ray version looking much better. Especially since Fox owns the rights to it. txfilmguy 03-20-07, 03:42 PM There weren't many fans of this movie at NewMarket. The execs didn't understand it and passed it off as an expensive student film. It didn't do so well at the box office mainly because it hit the weekend before 9/11. Once the cult following became apparent I think the studio started to catch on that there was a demand for it... hence the commissioning of a director's cut and subsequent theatrical re-release. Maybe they'll listen to the demand for it in HD as well. One can only hope. InfernoSoul 03-20-07, 03:49 PM I was just thinking about this today. This movie is awesome, hopefully they release it on Blu Ray eventually. barrym71 03-20-07, 03:56 PM It looked like ass on both SD-DVD and Showtime HD, so I'm not holding out hope on the Blu-ray version looking much better. Especially since Fox owns the rights to it. I believe that the Showtime HD broadcast for this film is a widescreen standard def upconvert, which is probably most of the reason it looks so wretched. Jiffylush 03-20-07, 04:26 PM I believe that the Showtime HD broadcast for this film is a widescreen standard def upconvert, which is probably most of the reason it looks so wretched. I think it is too (it actually tells you on their site). http://www.sho.com/site/schedules/hdtv.do Donnie Darko has dropped off of that list. I grabbed that off of Showtime HD as well on my S3, but I haven't had time to watch it yet. ahartig 03-20-07, 04:44 PM I'm curious as to the value of these kinds of threads. Ya, I guess these threads are pointless, maybe some Fox exec does sift through these forums and is right now recommending Donnie Darko to get released........ Please Omegasaber 03-21-07, 12:57 AM The Director's Cut is horrible. Instead of making you think about what is going on, it just flat out tells you. I enjoyed watching the original a few times and coming to my own conclusions, then watching it with the director commentary where he basically spells it all out for you. I still enjoy subsequent viewings, great movie. txfilmguy 03-21-07, 01:51 PM I'm glad I watched the director's cut for clarification on some things, but when I go back to it I'll probably pick the original every time. onyxx 03-21-07, 04:43 PM I love this movie but I must say that I have seen it on a HDTV transfer and it didn't look good. From what I know this was a low budget flick and we shouldn't expect much from the transfer. aaronwt 03-21-07, 05:09 PM Wasn't this on HDnet movies? I watched it last year and it looked excellent and I believe it was on HDNet movies. I also saw it recently on Showtime and it was a night and day difference. It was totaly unwatchable on Showtime HD. Jiffylush 03-21-07, 05:50 PM Wasn't this on HDnet movies? I watched it last year and it looked excellent and I believe it was on HDNet movies. Shadowknight 03-21-07, 11:42 PM If DD came out as an exclusive for either BR or HD, that would immediately make me want the format to lose, just because it's the punishment they deserve for porting that awful piece of cinema. Hate that movie. Hate. It. aaronwt 03-21-07, 11:59 PM I saw it last year on HDNet movies for the first time and loved it. I watched it again the next day which I haven't done with a movie in years. Everytime I see it I see more things that I previously missed. jspielberg 03-22-07, 12:45 AM I agree that the original was way better than the Director's Cut --- well other than the fact that the orginal's audio/sound levels were all jacked up. But the lack of spoon feeding made it way more enjoyable. Since we are on the topic of movies that will never be on BD, I recommend "The Keep". I don't think it has even been released on DVD, so fat chance of it making it to an HD format. |
