Thread: Topic: Digital Cinema: Technical Shoot-out The Netherlands
GI Joe Sixpack 04-25-08, 02:39 PM Couldn't find it. Gone now?
Alan Gouger 04-25-08, 04:52 PM Found it:
2nd forum down:"Straight to Video"
Page 3 4th thread down.
CINERAMAX 04-25-08, 05:52 PM There is a Guy there that claims himself to be Film God. That may be, but his comments on the DCI stuff makes him the candidate to be most likely Bitch Slapped in that forum, I have been dealing with some of these cinema characters lately and their outlook is totally tangenial to what I come to see as the high end video world mainly techs and projectionists. His comment about Christie being better built than Barco is laughable, nothing is better built than a Barco.
Yes we know. That Barco is a nonresponsive company, it is part of the Belgian government, the oldest Bureacracy in Europe, but YOU DON'T DEAL WITH THEM directly, you deal with a highly capable VAR [SIZE="7"](in extra large fonts), these people are the most competent and dilligent people in the History of Projection (period). Runco service could not come up to the ankles of the Barco Var's. So f_ck the Film God.
Alan Gouger 04-25-08, 06:08 PM Off topic to Barco digital..many years ago we became a Barco CRT dealer. First one we sold and installed ( brand new ) turned out to be DOA. We called Barco and they refused to believe the projector was DOA. They told us we did not know what we were doing. I had to wait a week for the Barco crew to show up and they brought a replacement just in case. I sat on the side lines watching these idiots while they could not figure out how to get this thing to turn on. They finally determined the set was bad. They went out to the van and brought in a brand new replacement. Ripped open the box and mounted it to the lift and hooked up power, video cables grabbed the remote and nothing. 2nd set DOA right out of the box. Man I was loving it :)
Third replacement worked like a charm. True story.
CINERAMAX 04-25-08, 06:10 PM That was then The SUPERKONTRAST is INDESTRUCTIBLE...
CINERAMAX 04-25-08, 06:31 PM Look I am seriously looking at the 200om as it can be probably hacked for contrast and gamma curve. But christie's are workhorses, the control system in the Barco will never be aproximated in the Christie. When you are sitting at the laptop looking at every parameter of operating information is when you can gauge the ammount of engineering that is in these projectors, by comparison the Christie is just a box with a lot of parts in it. Looking at all these operational parameters gives you the impression that you are looking not into a projector but a 787.
Dizzman 04-25-08, 07:36 PM So... lets take the word of Mr. Hyperbole against a bunch of very objective full time PROJECTIONISTS with far more time in the field looking at various boxes.
CINERAMAX 04-25-08, 07:45 PM Yeah, Let's. Cause the picture of the superkontrast IS NO HYPERBOLE.
Art Sonneborn 04-26-08, 09:57 AM Alan,
That is similar to what I heard Runco had to deal with with them.
As of now I've also heard that the Barco 3 chips have a strange lamp ficker issue and the panel alignment isn't anything to write home about. This may well be just isolated stuff but when one is making decisions with one hundred thousand USD or so one needs to consider that IMO.

Alan Gouger 04-26-08, 10:51 AM What happened to me took place many many years ago. It obviously has no barring in todays world or the company and its digital devision but Ive had the story bottled up for years and wanted to share it.
I never would have thought the experiance out of ordinary except they were so belittling they had me believing the whole thing was my fault. It wore down my self esteem when I
had plenty of experience and confidence from selling qty CRT back in the day. I had all basses covered and knew it was nothing I had done.
Thats why I took great pleasure when the second unit was DOA in their hands.

Come on, this is supposed to be the rugged series, according to the designer, so how come the panels went out of alignment as soon as you picked it up, sounds like it would need a giant carrying cage to become somewhat rugged:p:D.
odyssey 04-26-08, 11:31 AM Many of the key components of all the digital cinema models from the three licenses are supplied or specified by TI and are identical. These are the so called common components. These include the DMD alignment and mechanical adjustments, so no manufacturer has an advantage in this area.
The main areas of differentiation are the illuminaton system and the control software. The Barco control software is considered the best and is the main reason why Barco does well in the most demanding application, which is post production.
Regarding dealing with Barco and digital cinema service, they are approachable at the highest technical level and have excellent 24/7 support. I had calls returned within 15 minutes on Sundays.

Great to hear however this is not the kind of response universally.
GI Joe Sixpack 04-29-08, 04:53 PM Thanks for finding that, Alan. I know I was dredging up an old post, but you don't hear about digital cinema shoot-outs every day. Makes sense that it's in the "Straight to Video" forum rather than "film handling." (Aren't they so clever, denigrating it as "mere" video.) But it looks like Cineramax hijacked the thread! :)

How were able to pull off a direct link. Ive tried many times without any success. Good show:)
donaldk 04-30-08, 01:42 PM Simple, hover over the topic link, click on the righthand mouse button, click on open in new window. You'll see the direct url, but then the server redirect to the 'accept page' kicks in. However the url is still present in the full url of this pas, following referrer=, so cut and paste.
Generally, one can also find cloacked of hidden by frames urls in the history, as well.
Alan Gouger 04-30-08, 02:29 PM Ahh very good info, thank you!
