If I try to hook up my Mini that I'm buying to my 65" RPTV via DVI what can I expect? How will it look?

The main reason I'm getting the mini is that I want the ILife for DVD creation.

But I thought heck....while at it why not look into using it on my TV.

What would be required to use it to record OTA HD? I already have an OTA Antenna since my TV has a tuner.

Does the 60GB that comes with the mini work ok for this purpose or do you guys usually buy an external HDD?

I'm getting the 1.66 version to save some $$$. That way for less money I can get more RAM (I'm getting it with 1GB) and then add an external DVD burner if needed for burning.

It'll be hooked to my wireless network with windows systems as hosted sharing files.

If it doesn't work on my TV I'll just put in in the office with a KVM on my 21" GW Monitor.

But I would love for it to work on my tv as it would be nice to have that fuction.

What do you think?

Is this a DLP 1080P TV? If so, the mini would work wonderfully connected to it through DVI to HDMI cable. The mini should automatically recognize the Diamond display and output 1920x1080 60Hz. However you might have some overscan to contend with and the menu bar and the dock in the bottom might be blocked partially because of that. You could try to fix the overscan on the TV (if the TV supports that) or use a utility like DisplayConfigX or SwitchResX.

The Mini has a SPDIF output, so you could connect that to your surround sound receiver for Dolby Digital / DTS, etc. Apple's DVD player software passes through both Dolby Digital and DTS while playing DVDs. I think VLC player does this too.

For high definition TV broadcasts, if you only care of over the air (OTA), get the Elgato eyeTV Hybrid (elgato.com). I have one and it is great. It allows you to set recordings and also pause live TV. However, depending on whether the resolution of the station is 480p or 720p or 1080i, the space taken for a one hour broadcast could be huge (8 to 10 GB). So, the 60GB HD space in the mini will run out fast. I recommend getting a USB or Firewire (I prefer this) external HD. You could also get a bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. If you have a universal remote control like Harmony, you can program it to control the Front Row (mimic the apple remote). The remote can be used to control the eyeTV hybrid also. Also, you can set recording on the eyeTV hybrid remotely by using titantv's website.

I hope to have the same setup soon. I just bought a 61" JVC HD-ILA TV and I am using my PowerMac G4 with eyeTV Hybrid and DVI to HDMI cable. However, this is just for proof of concept. I was hoping that Apple will upgrade the mini soon. I could wait a couple of more months.

Do you think Apple will upgrade the Mini soon? Should I wait?

Yes my TV is a DLP.

Why use a DVI to HDMI and not just use the DVI to DVI cable that comes with the Mini. My TV has a DVI Input.

From what I've seen no upgrade has been announced and it's be rumored for years so I went ahead and got the 1.66 mini and upgraded to 1GB ram and 80GB HDD.

Should be here by Thur:)

Ok my mini has arrived...........I plugged it in to the Mit last night via DVI and as you said it did recognize it and set the display to 1920x1080....it looked good but as you said overscan is an issue.

I can barely see the bottom bar and can't the top at all.

So I can just download one of these programs you metioned and it will fix it?

I played around with the resolution and changed it to 1600x1400 or something like that..The next one under the 1080 res.

That worked and filled the screen correctly. However I get a message from the TV that states it's an invalid signal and I need to change my settings if it's an analog PC.

I don't get this message at 1080 so it seems I need to find a way to get 1080 to work?

Before you drop the cash for DCX or SRX, make sure you try messing around with the Mac OS X display system preference. There's a button for turning on/off overscan. Depending on the TV and what can be done with overscan via the TV, the OS's overscan button may help out.

While in 1080p mode I hit format and it changes to reduced mode which fills the screen and I can see everything.

After dling opera to zoom up on web browsing I think I have a working alternative.
