View Full Version : Impedance question

I tried searching but couldn't discern enough to answer my own question...

I have a Yamaha RX-V630 and have been running two M&K K7 speakers. These are 4 ohm speakers and apparently I'd been running this setup with the impedance selector switch on the receiver on the 8 ohm setting. Oops. Ok, so I moved it over to the 4 ohm setting, fixing that (although I never detected any issues). I also have a M&K K9 sub connected to the receiver.

My question is, I've added a third K7 as a center speaker and the receiver's manual states that at my current impedance selection, the center speaker should be "6 ohms or higher" ... can I run this speaker safely? What would be the solution if not?

Thanks.

Anyone have any thoughts? A 4 ohm speaker on a "6 ohms or higher" channel?

its fine to run at normal levels. with the k- series speakers, you wont be blowing the doors off anyway. these are small speakers. the only thing that the receiver will do if the speakers are drawing too much power is go into protection and turn off.
keep in mind the speaker impedance is nominal, meaning that it varies up and down but averages 4 ohms.
i've also found that the impedance switch does nothing. we may get some peopole that say otherwise but it is pretty moot. if the amplifier does not produce down to 4 ohms out of the box, then a switch will do nothing to increase that. no matter what. a switch cannot pull more power from an amplifier.

hook it up play it and enjoy. don't worry about it.
