View Full Version : what are the better indoor antennas? keldarironfist 03-20-07, 10:12 PM i cant really get an outdoor one at the moment so im curious as to what some of the better/best indoor antennas are. afiggatt 03-21-07, 01:41 AM For UHF only or for VHF & UHF? For the UHF part, the Silver Sensor is a good indoor UHF antenna. But in some cases, a simple UHF loop and VHF rabbit ear antenna is all that is needed. Depends on the range, direction, and what channels the stations are broadcasting the digital channels on. Check http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ISSUES/erecting_antenna.html for information. mikemikeb 03-21-07, 03:01 PM The answer depends on one thing: Will DTV stations in your area be anywhere in the channels 2-13 range currently, or in 2009? Those channels, which are on the VHF band, aren't easily picked up with a Silver Sensor. Here in the DC area, two stations that are on the UHF band right now will move to the VHF band in 2009. In the Atlanta area, WXIA-DT operates on VHF already. Could you provide the metro area in which you live? For instance, if you live in the Tampa area, tell us. If you need a VHF/UHF combo unit, I've had the most success with the RadioShack 15-1868, available at RS stores for $21. You may also have luck with the $50 RadioShack antenna that looks like a flying saucer (I don't have the model no. on hand), although that's more of a last resort antenna. If you need just a UHF antenna, the Silver Sensor is a good antenna. An even better performer is the DB-2, available from antennasdirect.com. I suggest trying the Silver Sensor first, because the DB-2 is less aesthetic, and doesn't come with a stand. keldarironfist 03-21-07, 04:38 PM my antenna web results and yes i would need vhf as well but couldn't i connect vhf bunny ears to a uhf antenna...? not sure how you would do it though....these are the digital results i did not include the analog. Not very expensive. Three of your stations are 23 and 34 miles away. These are rather far for typical indoor antenna range if you want to get these stations. But the closer stations should be within reach of an indoor antenna. However the large difference in directions to them makes the Silver Sensor - rabbit ear combo a poor choice as the Silver Sensor is somewhat directional. Check the active Hartford OTA thread for help: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=315169. A lot of people there use bowtie style antennas such as the Channel Master 4221 4 Bay and the AntennasDirect DB-2 because of the scattered location of the broadcast towers for the market. keldarironfist 03-21-07, 06:26 PM i would be willing to order the DB-2 if that would be better keldarironfist 03-24-07, 05:57 PM the DB-2 is reasonably cheap as well TydalForce 03-24-07, 10:30 PM I have to keep my antenna in a not-quite-right-direction (but almost) in a little bit of a valley, indoors. i've tried the Silver Sensor, ,the Terk HDTVLP, and the DB2. The DB2 wins, hands-down, above the others. Although it's the ugliest, and you have to figure out a way to mount it, it does a superior job ... at least for me |
