Hello, I’m new here and while it may be almost sacrilegious to admit, I’m not really a video/audiophile. I don’t own a vast DVD collection but do enjoy the occasional rental. In fact I’m not really a TV person in general and have had the same CRT (27” Proscan) in my living room since around 1996 or so, yeah go ahead and laugh but it works. But anyway we’re currently in the process of furnishing a new family room and I’ve decided I wanted a basic home theater on a budget. I started with a 37” Vizio (LCD 1080i). Remember, I said “on a budget”, and this TV seems pretty good for the price. I plan to add a Denon receiver (can’t remember the model no.) and speakers in the near future once we finalize the room layout. I’ll wait on the Blueray, HD-DVD thing but I do need a new DVD player. I’ve been reading a lot on this forum lately, trying to decide what I need but the more I read the more uncertain I become. Support of a lot of disc formats isn’t a priority as it will primarily be used for rental DVDs. I do want HDMI connection for the display and something that will not be a problem with my future Denon surround sound system. I want a good picture, reliability and user friendly features and Mrs. Poser would like it in black for aesthetic reasons (she really hates silver electronics). I know that it seems that everyone here recommends Oppo, but the 981 is the only one offered in black and it’s a little more $$ than I want to spend on an interim machine if there are other ones out there that will satisfy my needs plus I don’t like the fact that it doesn’t have component outs, just in case. Any recommendations?
