Here is one of the first announcement notices.
Fans of the series should be thrilled digital research is utilizing BOTH HD formats and no matter what camp you belong too, they will have a product for you.
Fans should also be thrilled about HD encodes of the art. The art is simply breath taking.
Props to this company and their communication, and for their efforts at preserving this timeless classic!

Am I wrong in assuming you need a BD or HD DVD drive on your PC to play this?
Given the controls used it could theoretically be a player based game. (4 directions and one button right?)
Did anyone have this on LD and if so how did you play?

No
It plays in all standalones, just like the DVD versions.
As an owner of all their products on DVD, there was an issue with a slight pause in between moves. They also claimed this was eliminated with the HD DVD and BR standalones.
But yeah - you need just a player, and the remote for movements. (arrows indicate direction, enter is the action button)

That makes it quite interesting, I loved the original in the arcade. I think I need to do some more research.

I've had the Sega CD version and the DVD version, although it's been on several others as well. Playing with a remote is a bit tricky, but you can do it.
If your remote has a disc for the directions, you're going to get angry at this game. If your remote has seperate buttons for each direction, you'll have much better luck.
Hopefully they'll have an option to show all the animation in its entirety like the DVD did. Surprisingly it's only about 10 minutes worth.

The real question as it always is with this game is, how many times are you going to play it until you get bored? For me they'll need to pack 1/2 and Space Ace 1/2 would be a nice bonus as well...

That's a good point with the PS3 remote it should work well although I was a bit frustrated with the Sega CD version too. It's just sort of a frustrating game to play in general because you have to hit the right button at precisely the right time. "Machine gunning" the button offers mixed results.

There was a definite rhythm to it.
Funny, I use the PS3 with Bluetooth remote, and it didn't even occur to me that I could use the sixaxis.
If done "properly", it should play quite well in the PS3 using the sixaxis. I have all of the arcade machines from the DL/Space Ace series, and they are just part of my collection, which means that they mostly just collect dust in my gameroom. Owning a Blu-Ray or HD DVD version would just be a "to have" purchase for me...
