I will be purchasing a 50" plasma in the next 2 weeks, and I need allot of help... My choices are the Panasonic 50PH9UK and the Pioneer Elite 1140. If I go the Panasonic route, which is where I am leaning right now, I would buy a video processor to help with SD content. After reading thru the threads on this monitor, it does not do a good job with SD content, as that is now what it was designed for. We mainly watch SD video and SD DVD's.

Since this is not my area of expertise, can someone recommend a low cost (under $1,500) video processor that would work well with a 768p 50" plasma. I understand I will probably have to go used to get decent quality for that price.Would the processor in the Elite 1140 be as good as say as anything I could buy fin that price range? If so, I may be better off going the Pioneer route.

I also plan on purchasing a new receiver, and have decided on the Yamaha RX-V2700. I understand that receiver has a ABT1010 chip in it. Will that work for my needs?

Also, why is there no discussion about Farouja or Runco. Are they out of date or problematic? There seems to be quite a few Runco PFP-7's for sale.I am guessing that unit only does SD and not HD, but again, this is not my area as you can probably tell.

I know I have allot of quesitons, so I apprciate any inpute you can give me. I have been spoiled by a Mitsubishi Diamond 55", which has very good SD and great HD. Hopefully I can come close to this with a plasma and a video processor.

What about a commercial pioneer and a key digital add-on card?

We mainly watch SD video and SD DVD's.I don't know how you came to that conclusion, but I just had the Panny TH-50PX600U before I traded it in for the 1140 (at Tweeter's great price), and I thought it did very well with SD. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised at how well.

Most reviews I've ever read on the '06 Panny's say the same thing.

Sourcemine,

I did consider that, but my understanding was that the input for the Key Digital card did not accept native rate. Again, I am relatively new, so I'm not sure how much of a factor that is.

Rammitinski,

The Panasonic I was looking at was the commercial 50ph9uk, not the 50PX600U. From reading the 9uk posts, there are a number of members who have stated that SD on those sets is grainy and sub par. I would image the 600U being a consumer plasma would have more processing, so it should do better with SD, but I have not seen one in person. nor have I seen a 9uk in person. I can only go by others experience with that set.

You should visit the plasma forum for a definitive answer, but I am under the impression that the only significant difference between the consumer and industrial Panasonic plasmas is the input option, speakers, and tuner (none in the 9UK). They may have slightly different firmware as I think the industrial models do have different setup menus. What was the source and connection on the unit you saw? Panasonic plasmas I have seen (and I own one and my brother owns two) have all been above average with SD sources. I suggest you get a second opinion, so to speak.

Thanks DSMITH,

not being able to see one in person makes me a little paranoid. With the prices as low as they are now, I guess I can just buy the 9UK and if SD is unacceptable I can always add a processor.

I appreciate your input.

Just be sure you get a DVI input card.
