Any recommendations for DVD to run with this TV? Haven't got my receiver dialed in, but it might be a Refurbed Marantz 7500 or 8500 or the Denon 2807.

Thanks

Was just comparing the 3 units on the OPPO site and it says for the 970H and 981HD that DLP Rear Projectors it "requires careful calibration". What does that mean?

DLP owners sometimes report enhanced macroblocking with Faroudja-chip players like the 971 and 981 (not the 970). Some people are able to minimize this by calibration, for example here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7270763&&#post7270763

The A2000 isn't a DLP and has no problem with the Faroudja-based 971/981.

You are correct................don't know why I have the DLP stuck in my head. GRRRR :D

That will depend on the transfer quality of the DVD being played.

DVD's with good transfers exhibit very minimal to zero macroblocking on my A2000/981 combo that has been carefully calibrated.

DVD's with medicore or poor transfers exhibit a fair amount of macroblocking in my case.....a lot of which doesn't exist when I play the offending DVD on another source such as my PS3.

Hello Hawk.

I've got a 50A2000 and just ordered a 981.

Can you share your calibrated settings for both?

These would at least give me a good starting point if not the exact settings.

Try the Denon 2930CI, or the 3930CI. Much better video processing than the Faroudja equipped players (no macroblocking either).

I have the same TV, I would not recommend an Oppo. macroblocks out the ass. I have done a decent amount of calibrating but yet to find this magic setting were macroblocking is (almost) gone. Try some upconverting players from a retail store, return them until you find something you like.

Also, get a 1080p upconverting player. With my 971 Oppo, 1080i looks decent, but the playback isn't that smooth. 720p is smoother, but not as sharp. 1080p should be able to do both.

The Oppo 981 is a 1080p upconverting DVD player.

From what I've read, the macroblocking is an issue primarily with DLP HDTVs. Am I correct or have I misunderstood what I've read?

You are correct, and I don't know what eric.exe is talking about. A2000+Oppo does not macroblock out the ass.
