Decided that I want to go with an upconverting DVD player, considering that my current one is older than most fossilized dinosaur eggs. So, since I'm new to all of this, what's the best bang-for-the-buck upconverting player out there? I've heard a lot about the Oppos, in particular the 970HD. Little more than I was wanting to spend though. I had looked into some of the Sony, Phillips, Samsung, and Panny models as well.

As always, any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

For <$100, it's tough to beat the Sony.

I have the Sony NS75H and I have been happy with it so far. I use it with a 56" Sammy DLP and the picture is excellent.

I see that the sony NS75H is on sale now for $100 at circuitcity and best buy, is that a good price? Also, i have a question.

Can you run hdmi to the tv (for the video) and use the optical audio out on the dvd player at the same time? I ask because my reciever only excepts optical audio and doesnt have hdmi.

I'd go with the OPPO Dv970H. Blows away the Sony in control festures which will affect picture quality. If cost is all that matters than the Sony would be my choice but only to save money not for any other reason. For 129 you can buy a refurb 970 direct from OPPO with a full new warranty and if their track record stays as it's always been than it will look and act the same as a brand new version.

You buy direct from Oppo: http://www.oppodigital.com/ or one of its resellers: http://www.oppodigital.com/wheretobuy.html

New you can buy direct or my advise would be to call AV Science and ask for Richard. They stock all the OPPO players , don't charge for shipping and ship right away. Best of all they're responsible for this forum!!!! If you want a refurb contact OPPO direct. Another good feature about buying an OPPO player is the outstanding customer support they provide, unlike most companies they really , really service their customers and are constantly updating firmware when improvements are available

The Philip 5960 is a great deal at around $60 (and a new 1080p version is imminent for around $70); the non-USB version (5140) is often even cheaper. Pretty high bang/buck

The Oppo gains you much better picture parameter adjustment and great customer service, certainly worth the extra money if you don't like the picture out of the Philips. If you play foreign movies, make sure that the unit can be made region-free and can handle PAL (Oppo and Philips can, Sony and Panasonic cannot). - DR
