I don't see much (OK, any) discussion of LG's new LCDs... but with the LY3D series sporting 8000:1 or 5000:1 contrast, HDMI 1.3 and 120Hz it seems like an option for everyone looking at the Toshiba LX177, Sharp D92U, Samsung 71 or 81 series and so forth... I'm looking for a 57" screen with all the latest gizmos and my only choices are seemingly the LX177, Samsung 81F and the LY3D.

So here's what I can find...

LG ELECTRONICS UNVEILS NINE LCD 1080P FULL HDTVS, INTEGRATES PREMIUM STYLING AND ADVANCED FEATURES

Company Introduces 2007 Line, Delivers Enhanced Picture Quality, Increased Integration, Innovative Design at 2007 CES

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2007 – Introducing one of the industry’s broadest assortments of liquid crystal display (LCD) high-definition television (HDTV) models, LG Electronics (LG) showcased its expansive lineup of 20 LCD TVs – led by nine LCDs with Full HD 1920 x 1080p display capability – at the 2007 International CES® (Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center).

With enhanced contrast ratio, TruWide Viewing Angle and Simple Link connectivity, LG’s LCD HDTVs offer consumers a vivid, life-like viewing experience. By driving integration, ease-of-use and premium designs, LG’s LCD line up is a high-end solution for consumers looking for the best product for their home.

LG’s 2007 LCD line reflects the company’s global leadership as the world’s largest flat panel producer and as a leading developer of advanced flat panel display and digital HDTV technologies. LG’s 2007 LCD line includes five main series of LCD products offering a range of sizes from 20- to 57-inches:

• LC7 Series offers consumers the widest range of sizes from 26- to 47-inches (the 47-inch unit is Full HD 1080p), and includes LG Simple Link, enhanced contrast ratio of 5,000:1 and advanced TruWide Viewing Angle technology.

• LB4D Series includes 32-, 37-, 42- and 47-inches and features TruMotion Drive, a third HDMI input and USB Media Host for playback of digital photos (JPEG) and music (MP3). The 47LB4D also features Full HD 1080p display resolution.

• LB5D Series includes screens in 37-, 42-, 47- and 52-inches, all with Full HD 1080p resolution, USB Media Host and 3 HDMI inputs.

• LY3D Series (47-, 52- and 57-inches) combines Full HD 1080p resolution with TruMotion Drive and wide color gamut for the ultimate picture quality and viewing experience.

• In addition, LG offers the LS7D Series which includes 20- and 23-inch LCDs. These two widescreen HDTVs incorporate ATSC/NTSC/QAM clear tuners.

FULL-HD ENHANCED PICTURE QUALITY

LG’s nine LCD HDTVs with 1920 x 1080p “Full HD” display capability address the growing demand for the best possible resolution. With sizes ranging from 37- to 57-inches, LG provides consumers with a number of Full HD size options to best fit their needs.

All models 32-inches and larger offer enhanced performance by incorporating the latest Super IPS panel with TruWide Viewing Angle technology. TruWide Viewing Angle, maintains a more uniform contrast ratio, and minimizes color shift and distortion, even at extreme viewing angles up to 178 degrees.

Select models also incorporate TruMotion Drive, 120Hz panel technology, which improves moving picture response time for clearer moving picture images. The new LY3D series also features an improved wide color gamut expanding displayable colors to 92 percent of the NTSC spectrum offering a wider range of natural colors and providing consumers with a greater overall viewing experience.

Every model includes LG’s exclusive XD EngineTM technology that takes low-resolution analog signals to near high-definition levels and also improves digital signals to provide consumers crisp images. And with enhanced contrast ratio offering a deeper black level, consumers will experience a better overall viewing experience.

INCREASED INTEGRATION AND FUNCTIONALITY

To enhance ease-of-use, all new LG LCD TVs 26-inches and larger incorporate “LG Simple Link” connectivity, allowing control of other LG Simple Link compatible equipment, such as DVD players or home theater systems. The units are connected with a regular HDMI cable, and use the HDMI-CEC standard to enable the user to control other components via on-screen menus or directly from each component.

All large screen models (26-inches and larger) include a minimum of two HDMI with HDCP inputs with step-up models adding a third input, providing flexibility for additional digital components. Further, many models incorporate USB Media Host to play digital music and photo files.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN

LG’s award-winning design team elevates the look of the new product line with a high-glossy black finish and eye-catching designs. LG’s LB5 LCD Series incorporates 0.3mm micro-perforated speaker grills for a maximum polished look without losing the robust, powerful sound. With a sleek and slim high-end look, LG’s LCDs provide both elegance and innovation in one package. Additionally, the LC7, LB5 and LY3 Series incorporate a wave-design at the bottom of the panel, providing a high-end look and simple accent design. 2007 models feature overall depth reduction with some models as slim as 3.1-inches.

I am interested in the 37LB5D as the feature-set would work well for me, but I have not yet seen the set in person and have no experience with LG. Can we expect that the PQ, sound quality, and reliability of these sets will measure up to the better/best from samsung, for example?

FYI, The LG 2007 brochure is online at proaudioinc.com

I have been checking here every day to see some reviews of the 42LB5D but it has been depressingly quiet. Seems kind of strange. I was quite impressed with this unit on my initial viewings at CC and Best Buy. Even the CC web site only has one review. In roughly the same amount of time since model release, the Samsung thread has over 100 pages and here we are on the first one still. I am considering the LG vs. either the Samsung LN-T4661F or LN-T4061F. Anyone own the 42LB5D who can give an in home evaluation? I am particularly interested in hearing about backlight uniformity, connectivity issues, 1:1 pixel mapping, contrast impressions, etc.

So, anyone out there has the 37LB5D in their home or seen it in a B&M store yet? Is there a delay in releasing it? I thought the brochure says it's due out in Feb '07. I haven't seen it at any B&M stores and none but one online merchant seems to have it. Not sure if it actually has it in stock.

Also, I found different dynamic contrast ratio specs on the Internet: 5000:1, 6000:1, and 10000:1. So, which is correct?

Best Buy has the 47in model now:

A heads-up to fellow Canadians, the 42" LG is being liquidated at BB for only $1750 CDN; this is $250 cheaper than the US.

I'm so tempted to get this (already have a 1080p Aquos) because it's an IPS panel. For some reason LG does not seem to publish the static (actual) contrast ratio for these displays.

i just bought a 37LB4D the other day(no in store stock so i have to wait 2 more days to pick it up), i felt that the 120 hz feature was probably more important to me than 1080p on this size of panel. I am also hooking up an HD-A2 dvd player to it as well. its my first HD tv but i will try to give a reasonable review of this set in the next week. I found very few or no reviews of this one so i hope i can be of some help. (man, i cant wait to rid myself of my 150 lb 32" tv and go HD)

In the 37" LG range I've only seen the 7D in stores. Can you tell me what store was able to order the 4D for you?

Thanks

I am in Canada so i picked it up at Futureshop but it is also available at bestbuy as well. The salesmen told FS was the only one to carry it but because BB and FS are same ownership it looks like those are the only 2 places

Hi,

What proof do we have of HDMI 1.3 vs. 1.2 ? I cannot find any reference to 1.3 on the LG site here in Canada.

Just bought the 37LB4D and just like Rotorhead, I felt like the 120Mz option was more important then 1080p.

Here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1009930&highlight=37LB4D) is my 5 cents.
