Hi all, received my Apple TV today and plugged it in via a HDMI cable to my Yamaha RX-V2700 to the DTV HDMI input. This is my first HDMI device.

I do not have a HDMI TV yet so I have a component video cable to my HDTV television. I can't get any picture from Apple TV. Can a HDMI input not flow down the component video output from the RX-V2700 ?

Thanks!

Rob

Your best bet is to get a component cable for the ATV. I'm not sure of this receiver, but most will either upconvert all inputs thru the highest available rez (in this case HDMI) or you'll need an output for each level of rez: Composite, Component & HDMI.

Hope this helps

Someone else may comment on your specific receiver.

Most receivers don't convert HDMI to component - that would mean it is stripping out HDCP. Since Apple TV has component video, just use the component video output from Apple TV to connect to the receiver (this receiver will switch component video also) and then connect component video from receiver to TV. Otherwise, just connect component video from Apple TV to your TV.

No receivers convert HDMI to component (digital to analog).

It sounds like you have an HDMI cable running from the Apple TV into your Yamaha receiver and a component cable running from the Apple TV directly into your HDTV and neither is working.

I just read where only one of the two jacks is active at any given time and HDMI output takes precedence over the component output.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305155

"When an HDMI cable is connected, no video is sent via the component video connections."

So, in theory, if you unplug the HDMI cable and probably restart the Apple TV, it should work with the component outputs going directly into your TV.

Also, it is doubtful that your Yamaha will convert HDMI to component. With most receivers, if you are using digital audio, they will not convert to analog audio. I would guess the same is true in terms of converting digital HDMI video (with audio) to analog component video.

Let me know if I've misunderstood your situation...

I have a HDMI cable from Apple TV to the Yamaha receiver. Then from my receiver, I have a component video cable to my TV. This works for dvd (component video) and satellite (s-video) but I get no picture from the apple tv (hdmi). Since I have no other HDMI to test, I conclude that I can only use component video or lower in a pass through through my receiver.

This gets even worse. I have a older HDTV, about 4 years old. It's a Mits WS-65909 I think. I cannot get Apple TV higher that 480p. Even though it's an HDTV and I used to view HDTV through Time Warner Cable, the Apple TV will not either go into 720p or 1080i.

So basically I need a new TV.

I tried hooking it up component video straight to the TV bypassing the receiver and had the same effect. Nothing higher than 480p.

So older HDTV owners beware of the Apple TV.

Receivers won't convert from HDMI to component...

So you select 720p and what happens?

Older CRT HDTVs and HD-Ready TVs don't do 720p at all. They did 480p and 1080i. I am pretty sure 1080i should work through component video. Just make sure Apple has not limited component video to 480p. That would suck!!

Hooked by AppleTV to my Sony 36" 4:3 Wega through component direct to the TV, set it at 1080i and it works beautifully. The HD movie trailers really show off the potential of the hardware. Just hope that 720p iTunes downloads are not too far off. Even just TV shows at first due to the file size.
