View Full Version : Please Help! My broken Pioneer Plasma
babieblackcat 03-22-07, 01:21 PM Hi friends, I have been reading this forum for years, and this is my first post to ask for help.
Getting straight to the topic now. My 4 years old, $6600, 50" Pioneer 5030HD just died on me last week. :( I was watching TV and it suddenly sounds like a light bulb breaking sound inside the TV, and then no more pictures and the power turn off itself. Since then, I am not able to turn on the TV. When I press the power button, it fresh few times in RED, and then automatically turn off. The TV wouldn't even turn on in Black screen.
Is that sounds like a Glass Panel broken sympton? I heard the Glass Panel worth 75% of the plasma cost? The original warranty is expired. Should I even spend (waste) hundreds of dollars to ask for a Tech to check it out? Anyone experience this before?
I used this Plasma for about 7000-9000 hours. I was expecting to function for few more years.
If it is confirmed this plasma is not fixable, what do I do with it? Recycle it?
RomanInvision 03-22-07, 01:23 PM I am assuming you did not purchase extended warranty? If not I would consider having a tech come out just to get an idea of the repair but they will charge you for that.
ClarkeBar 03-22-07, 01:31 PM Sorry to hear that.
Gosh, my 18 month old EDTV already has 7100 hrs. and counting. You must have viewed mainly for HT use.
I know no one wants to dismiss a $6600 investment as throw away after 4 years. It might well be worth it to have someone look at it if you were satisifed with the set. But the cost of a new 5070 from forum dealers is just nuts right now. If you do replace it I would certainly recycle if available.

Not to be taken the wrong way, but is there an advantage to recycling other than the environmental impact (i.e. are you compensated monetarily for recycling your old plasma - like a "core" charge on a car battery)?
I am NOT saying that the environmental concerns are not reason enough, I'm really just wondering.
discopaul 03-22-07, 02:12 PM I'd get in touch with Pioneer and be nice when I do. Sometimes with these large companies they are willing to work with you, i.e. you pay labor and they'll cover the panel. This in an effort to keep a valued customer, and it's only been 4 years. Like I said be nice and respectful in dealing with them and there might be a good chance they can work something out for you.

Best thing to do is get an estimate or at least talk to a technician that can give you a ball park estimates of what it might cost to fix as maybe it's a common problem they have experienced on these sets. If over $1000.00, I would start over with a new 5070 as it can be had in the price range of mid $2500.00 and you get a far more advanced set. Good luck as I feel your pain for not getting the full use of the set, but the good thing is, prices have dramatically dropped and quality has dramatically increased. Just think of what you get to replace it with and that should help put a smile on your face.

Pioneer had a power supply problem on their earlier models and were replacing the failed component free of charge on affected models, and your model is on the list. You should contact them and see if they'll fix yours for free under the program. Call them at 800-421-1404.
"Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. announces that it will continue to provide a free, in-home power supply replacement for certain of its second and third generation plasma models listed below for consumers who experience a problem with the original power supply. In some cases, a loud popping sound can be heard when a power supply fails. After the power supply fails, the plasma is no longer operable."

rickneuropa 03-22-07, 05:40 PM This may be a dumb question, but did you check the cable connections from the "connector unit" to the panel? I know I had trouble with Pioneer, and it was that one of the cables came loose. But my symptoms were a blinking light.
Marky_Mark896 03-22-07, 05:41 PM That would be cool if that's his problem Randy. Hopefully it is.
babieblackcat 03-23-07, 07:01 PM Thanks for all the help. I called Pioneer and they refer me to a local repair service center. They are going to charge me $65 just to take a look at it. Let see what's he going to say.
My Pionner was Made in Japan, and I thought it is more reliable than most other brand that is Made in Mexico or China. But I guess it is not the case here.
Marky_Mark896 03-23-07, 07:22 PM Did you mention what Randy pointed out?
Gegiasson 10-10-08, 08:35 PM Does anyone know the code from the remote comtrol to unlock a Pioneer pro1110 after it has gone into a circuit lockdown? I saw the repair man typing a few buttoms from the pro1110 tv remote while he was troubleshooting it and was unwilling to provide to me. Please let me know. Thank you.
