I have a 46" Sony Rear projection tv (Sony KP-46WT520). I bought this TV two or three years ago. It has 1 HDMI input on the back, which I have used for my HD Directv box since I got the TV.

I just bought a Toshiba HD DVD player and when I try to connect it with the HDMI input on the TV, I get sound but no picture at all. I get the Toshiba HDTV message on my screen when the player powers on, but as soon as the DVD comes on the picture goes away and I just get the gray bars like their is nothing being input.

Again, the HDMI works for my Directv...

I'm baffled.

I called Toshiba and Sony. Toshiba first said to try a different HDMI cable, so I went and got another one. Nothing.

Sony was no help at all, if I said I had a BluRay player it may have been different??

I called Toshiba again and they walked me again through the whole set up..nothing.

They then told me the HD DVD player might be bad so I returned it for another one. Nothing..

I gave up, returned it and bought an upconverting player and tried hooking that up with the HDMI...nothing.

I don't understand how the HDMI can work with my Directv, but nothing else.

Can anyone provide any insight?

Your problem sounds like the HDMI port on your TV is having HDCP "handshake" problems with the DVD players you've tried.

I did a search of AVS and couldn't find any posts from owner's using the sets model number. It's a discontinued model and technology which probably explains Sony's lack of interest.

I would use a component connection for SD DVDs and not worry about HD-DVD or Blu-Ray until the format war is over and you are ready to upgrade your TV.

If you used a subject for a new post that included the TV's model then you might locate some owners here at AVS.

Something like:

"Need help for HDMI problems with Sony KP-46WT520"

Good luck.

Some older Sony displays have known HDMI sync issues, which causes trouble with some cable STBs, upscaling DVD players, HD-DVD players, and Blu-ray players. I don't remember specific models.

Thankfully, both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players will output 1080i over component. But you won't get DVD upscaling over component, because the DVD Forum prohibits that.

And if your Sony's internal scaler is decent to great, your std DVDs via component @ 480i should look pretty nice as well. And you'll get your HD-DVDs in actual 1080i. So you could go back and get that HD-DVD player.

or, like you said, you can buy a new TV :D .

On a serious note.. I watched an HD DVD through the component hookup and it was very nice... but there are not a lot of movies outh there yet, and I couldn't justify the price if I was going to get no improvement with my regular DVD's.
