View Full Version : Plasma TV Near the Electrical Panel?

We just finished our basement and the best location for the TV seems to be near the electrical panel or more accurately, one-half of the plasma will cover (in front of) the electrical panel door. Since the TV will be on a articulating mount, I can move it to the side if I need to access the panel.

Will there be any issues if the plasma is so close to the panel?

Thanks!

I'm not an electrician, but aren't there some code standards that preclude blocking your electrical panel? I have no sources to back me up on this, just something you may want to look in to.

would be a code violation in Mass.
(Almost everything is). ;)

Not a good idea if the back of the panel is metal.
That metal cover will most surely be grounded.

That means while you are reaching in to flip
a breaker, your arm or shoulder might come
in contact with the cover and your hand/arm
could provide a path to ground.
Kinda like standing in a flooded basement barefooted and flipping breakers.. :(

The other problem is EMF. The current from inside the breaker (or fuse) box
generates a magnetic field around the box. It can be very strong
when an appliance comes on.

That magnetic field can get inside the circuits of your TV and cause
interferences to it's digital and analog functions.
You might just hear 60hz hum in the audio or you might see PQ effects.

But, if the TV is built like a tank, you may not see any hum problems.
----

FIY, when lightning hit a tree across the street from me, I was in the basement.
The sparks came out of my electrical box and shot over to the oil burner.
(The burner is about 4 feet from the box).
Arcs were snapping around the room for less than 2 seconds,
mostly to the pipes in my heating system. (forced Baseboard hot water).
Took damage to my old phone modem.

What I'm saying is, if lighting hits your power lines outdoors, it might find
a quick path to ground via your TV set.

Cheers,
Rich

Hi Sunny. As an electrician here in NY I can tell you obstructing the panel cover is surely a code violation. I also agree with everything stated in the previous post. Even if the electrical system in your home is in perfect code compliant condition, it's a risk. Other than alternate placement I wouldn't be comfortable offering any insight that would leave the display in front of that panel cover.
