First post here although I have been reading the archives for a few days. I am having some trouble with my Rear Projection unit. I purchased it in 2004 and I had the Green and Red Tubes repaired under warranty within my first year of ownership.

Over the last week the TV image has been "flickering" with horizontal lines jumping up and down on the screen. The picture is fine otherwise but it is very annoying. The defect happens on all inputs and even when it is on a "blue screen" with out an input. Today I took off the back cover and powered down the set. I then used compressed air to blow the dust out of the TV in an effort to fix the problem. The problem went away for the first 2 min of running but then came back. It may just be due to the components being cold. I will retest to see if the problem is not present at startup.

Another question I have is the tubes seemed to make a popping sound like capacitors discharging or something when the TV was on. Then when I turned off the TV the same sounds happened but they were crackling a lot more often. I think this is a normal sound for when a TV turns off but I am not sure if it should make the sounds when running.
Thanks for listening.

I tried removing everything plugged into the TV except one input but the problem is still there. I removed the powerstrip and plugged the TV directly into the wall. still have the problem. I also tried making sure the power was getting good contact at the TV input.
Through reading I thought it was some interference issue but now I am not sure....?

This is a wild guess from your description of the symptoms: It sounds like there is some shorting going on in one or more of the crts. It may be that a little tweak (downward) to the screen controls could temporarily help. The screen controls are pots that turn the output levels of the crts up/down, so this affects the grayscale of the Tv. Do lots of research & reading before you mess with grayscale or your picture will have funny colors.

hammer, thanks for your reply. is tweaking the screen controls down done through the menus or do I physically adjust something in the TV?
I will start reading about grayscale. Thanks
