View Full Version : Will Plasma be a good choice to watch a single channel?
Hi, I am a newbie here. I am looking to buy a TV (46" or more). Our viewing model is one international channel for almost whole day (about 4 hrs during day and 6 hours during evening). Station logo is there for almost all the time with an interval of 3-4 min during commercial for every 15 min. Can I buy Plasma? Will it have burn-in effect?
Thanks for your help!
Marky_Mark896 03-22-07, 09:13 PM If that's all you expect to watch, you'll probably have burn-in eventually if the logo is a solid color or solid colors. But if the logo never moves, and you always watch that one channel, then it doesn't really matter if it burns in. :D
If the logo goes away during commercials for a couple minutes every 15 minutes or so you will be fine. It would take it a long time to burn in. But like Marky_Mark said, if that is the only channel you watch it wouldn't matter much. I would go ahead and do it, just don't abuse the plasma too bad.
You may want to try and move the horizontal/vertical position every once in a while (my guess is once a week/month?). This will position the logo in a different spot hopefully reducing any burn-in.
Better yet, keep an eye on that area, and if you see image retention, adjust the position and see if that helps over time.
cajieboy 03-23-07, 12:17 AM Is this display used for business purposes? That's the only place I could imagine this type of unique useage. If so, then you're most likely going to be using it in a fairly well-lighted room or space, and possibly w/large windows around. If this scenario sounds closely familiar, then 'd have to say go w/a LCD.
why2not 03-23-07, 07:54 AM It will get burn in. 15/18 = 83% of the time the same pixels will be displaying the same image. It will get there. Now if that will be the only channel EVER watched & you don't care about resale and & you don't care about seeing a "negative" logo during commercials & the channel never decides to remove/move their logo, then the BI will not be an issue for you.

Will it have burn-in effect? For your use, i would get an LCD with a good stretch mode. I would say the logo will eventually burn into the screen of a plasma and since it's for commercial use then PQ probably isn't as important as it would be in a home. And LCDs tend to have more "pop" and you can adjust the backlight to bring this out more, and an LCD won't reflect bright lights or windows that may be found in a business environment. It always bugs me when i see a plasma at a business or restaurant etc that's all washed out from bright light, or is reflecting sunny windows or ceiling lights in the screen to the point that the image is unwatchable. An LCD would pretty much punch through all this and give you a much more consistent picture. As long as people aren't watching it from off to the sides . . . . :D
Thanks you all.. we watch couple of other channels too- but may be an hour or so. On the logo - we watch SunTV.. so I am asuming it would cause an issue.
Thanks again all of you.. it helped me to decide what I can buy
No. It is for home usage. We watch mainly the international channel using dish.. Very less local channels or movies...
elwood58 03-23-07, 04:55 PM The Sun Network is an India network that gets great reviews for the quality of their content.
yes. they have lot of varierty programs so we watch them in evenings lot..It is the channel we have in US so our kids will learn our language (Tamil).. I presume I wont be able to buy plasma if I watch this channel alone..
afiggatt 03-23-07, 05:11 PM I agree with the other posters that if the TV will be primarily showing just one 1 channel and that channel has a logo on all the time & I assume is a 4:3 channel, burn-in is a concern with a plasma. This would be an issue if the choice was a widescreen CRT TV as well. I prefer plasmas over LCDs for picture quality, but in this situation, the LCD flat panel would be the wiser choice. Now you have to figure out which LCD will provide a good picture quality for an SD channel.
Rammitinski 03-23-07, 05:15 PM What about a plasma like the newer Samsung's, where they have that supposed, burn-in preventing "pixel shift technology"? Would that be good enough to handle it, I wonder?
(Although, if the channel's SD, I don't know how well it'll look on the Samsung - I've heard varying reports of how well they display SD.)
Thanks! This may be a wrong forum. Will I be better of with a LCD Projection TV instead of LCD?
