View Full Version : Kds-r50xbr1 Sxrd Hdmi Ports Dying?
Sorry for the new thread. I couldn't find a perfect place for this thread.
I've been running my 50XBR1 for over a year with the following hookups:
SA 8300HD via HDMI to the set
Old Samsung HD-841 via DVI-HDMI cable to the set
Both cables were purchased from Ram Electronics about a year and half ago.
Yesterday after watching TV for about an hour when I got home from work, I powered down the system and went to run some errands. When I came home powered up the system I got the dreaded DVI/HDMI output blocked use Component Outputs from my 8300HD box ( I know there is a lot on this issue else where on AVS). On screen menus etc worked so I knew that I was getting signal on the HDMI cable. This morning I went to the local comcast office and swapped the box. Tonight same issue. After completing all the trouble shooting thats available here for the 8300HD I decided to see if my DVD player was working.
When I powered up the DVD player I got the welcome screen, but when I put in a disc from blockbuster I got nothing on the screen. Took out that disc and put in a non hollywood disc and everything was fine.
This led me to believe that I was having an HDCP issue. So to test it I used a "altered" HD-841 that I have on another set that has HDCP disabled, popped in the blockbuster disc everything is fine.
So where I initially thought this was just a SA 8300HD box issue (which by the way since day one I never had an issue with the box and the SXRD) I now don't know what the hell is going on.
Of course the HDMI inputs on the SXRD are HDCP compliant, my cables are compliant and the biggest point: all of this has been working for over a year.
So did some how HDCP get turned of on the HDMI ports on the SXRD?
Is there a way to reset the ports?
I haven't swapped cables yet, but it seems weird that two cables would go at the exact same time.
I've fooled around with handshake stuff for hours and hours and hours no combination of on/off etc seems to be doing the trick.
Any suggestions/thoughts are much appreciated. BTW I know I can go back to component but at this point its just a principle thing to get this working again after a year plus of it working flawless.
Thank you!
Robbie
I had a similar issue that required the HDMI board to be replaced.

Yes, it is possible for your hdmi ports to go bad. It happens from time to time with no pinpoint explanation of a cause. Cable boxes "seem to be" the potential instigators of several failures, but I can't prove it. Many boxes have a glitchy hdmi interface with sync problems to begin with. This lack of conformity to the spec is just asking for trouble. Like your cable company will ever admit to it...fat chance.
Although the fact that the ports still pass the digital signal from your hacked player is interesting, nonetheless there is some obvious IC damage.
There is a fix, and yes, the set is in need of service. The PD board went bad. It is part # A-1152-716-A
Chances are your tech will replace the entire block assembly since it will be a less intensive service call that way (the little PD board is a pain to dig out and replace). Quite a routine.
Manufacturer Sony
Part Number A-1152-716-A
Description PD BOARD, COMPLETE
Your price $177.63
Core charge $115.00
It's not the optical block, it's a circuit board in the Digital Block Assembly. Its function is the HDMI interface.
I've run into a very similar experience. I originally had HDCP handshake issues between my STB and SXRD, but I resolved this by leaving the STB on all the time. This work-around has been a very effective over the last few months. In the event that I still got the an HDCP error (bright green screen), I could cycle the power or change tuners and the picture would come right up. A few days ago I got an entirely different result of an HDCP error -- rather than a green screen, I got no picture at all (audio worked fine because it's connected via optical). When switching to DVD input, I got the load up screen but no picture when the DVD started to load up. None of my other usual work-arounds fixed the problem. The only way to resolve the issue was to unplug/replug the power to everything. The very next day the same thing happened -- no picture on either HDMI input. Could this be evidence of a failing part (e.g., A-1152-716-A)? I definitely don't want to have to unplug/replug my equipment on a regular basis!
Thanks for any replies!
gunshotx 02-19-08, 03:53 PM I recently discovered I have the same problem...
I've had my Sony for quite sometime, but until recently didn't need to use the HDMI cables. I been only using the component cables....
BUT now I have some devices a Toshiba HD XA-2 and PS3 and neither device works when I put in a HDDVD movie, Blu-Ray Movie or a PS3 game. The menus are displayed, but as soon as I attempt to play any content, the screen goes black.
Have you been able to resolve your HDCP./HDMI Issues with the 8300HD Explorer(Which my cable provider uses as well).
Did fixing the PD Mount work?
Please help!

SSUNBRN 11-19-08, 08:38 PM FYI for anyone experiencing problems with their SXRD XBR1 HDMI ports; if you are still within your warranty period (unlikely) make sure you report the problem to Sony. 17 months ago I reported the problems above and today both my HDMI ports have completely failed. Cycling power and/or inputs will no longer fix the problem. I have a tech coming out to the house and I suspect he will replace the A-1152-716-A part. Thankfully I purchased the Best Buy warranty (PSP) so I shouldn’t have any out of pocket expenses.
I'm consolidating a list of people with Sony SXRD HDCP hardware issues. See my post here:

JohnnyGraphic 01-02-09, 11:46 AM The link above doesn't work. Can you perhaps post up an updated link? Or was it removed?
Thanks.
BTW, I have the same blinking issue on my Sony set. Best Buy replaced the bulbs, but that didn't help. It did seem that it worked fine with my cable box & HDMI cable. So, I thought it was my DVD player (Sony NS 75H). But, I got a different Sony DVD player and I'm getting the same problem.

SSUNBRN 01-03-09, 10:23 AM Link fixed; my problem occurred regardless of source as long as it was HDCP content.
FYI; Best Buy ended up replacing my TV after 3 unsucessfull attempts to repair.
JohnnyGraphic 01-03-09, 04:19 PM Thanks for the updated link!
My HDMI input is working now! Very odd. I made the appointment with Best Buy for the tech to come out on Tuesday, even gave them the Sony part # etc.
I decided that my entertainment area needed some tidying, so I pulled out my old 5 disc disc-changer that is skipping on me an cleaned everything up. Pulled a few extra wires out and also pulled out the RCA audio inputs from the DVD player to the TV. (Didn't know that the HDMI passed audio too). So, ever since then, the HDMI input has been working flawlessly!
Go figure.

Ragingmike 01-23-09, 05:09 PM HDMI problem - I get a quick glimpse of the picture, then a green flicker, then the screen goes black - always have audio though. This happens on both HDMI ports.. The cables are fine.. Where can I get a replacement HDMI board ?

Sounds like the exact same problem I had. The repair guy tried several different parts and it didn't fix the problem. They ended up replacing my TV. Take a look at the link I posted above for details.
JohnnyGraphic 01-25-09, 12:56 AM It's BAAAACK! Although it isn't happening every 2 minutes like it was before, it is still happening! It lasted about a week before it started up again. Now, it is happening about every 10-15 minutes. So, I've been using my component video cable instead of the HDMI input. Very frustrating!
I need to call Best Buy and have them come out again. Need to make sure it will happen so the tech isn't standing there staring at the TV for an hour before it happens.
Very un-happy...
Johnny
I don't think my ports totally died but my PS3 refuses to talk to my TV now. Oddly enough, my directv box still works via hdmi.
JohnnyGraphic 05-05-09, 04:07 PM Update: New BluRay player. Still happening. Calling Best Buy for their extended warranty service.
Ugh.
