View Full Version : Sammy t5054 Not good at all hitachi 401ok
chris98007 03-23-07, 12:57 AM I went to cc to look at the sammy t5054. i was looking forwad to seeing it since the specs look awsome. First let me tell you i am very picky yet understanding. I know sd is not going to look the best and what not.
Very dissapointed. The sammy was right next to a 42 inch version of the same model. First they were both set with the same video settings. The 50 was very dark muted compaired to the 42 inch. This was with contrast at 100 and brightness at 50. Basicly if you did a reset. The 42 looked like it just had a brighter bulb in it.
Second there was a strange black line running down the left side of the screen, not sure what to call it. Also there is only 3 settings for video??? 4:3 16:9 and 16:9 stretch??? i am use to more options then that.
On my way out i looked at the new hitachi401, it was very nice compared to the sammy. I was truly amazed how bad the 5054 looked. Earlier i saw the sammy 5073 and the pio 5070 next to each other and it was hard to tell them apart. I even told the cc guy to replace the 5054 because noboy is going to buy it like that.
Any thoughts or ideas??
jvernon 03-23-07, 07:36 AM Do you have an opportunity to look at the displays at a "real" video store? Trying to make a valid decision at a CC, BB, Costco, etc. is pretty futile.

I have been saying for 6 months that Samsung would eventually take market share leadership from Panasonic. Samsung is the largest electronic company in the world and they have committed significant resources to plasma and LCD development. Panasonic has become very lazy the last two years and has done little to improve their plasma line. In fact, they are currently selling the same technology they sold two years ago relying on their Consumer Reports reputation and sheep-like customers that blindly buy based on a CR article rather than buying what looks best.
This is proof that competitive landscapes change constantly. What was good two years ago may not be the best today. The lesson is don't be a sheep and do some research before you buy
JerseyPickle 03-23-07, 11:02 AM I have the Hitachi 1080 and I'm exchanging it for the Samsung today.
to each his own I guess.
IMO the Samsung had the best picture on the wall.
SteveK123 03-23-07, 11:10 AM do the new samsungs bobb the 1080 image like last years models did?

i don't even know what that means
Bengbeng 03-23-07, 11:22 AM I'm wondering if this is going the same route as last year; at first instance, very positive reactions about the new Sammys (as good or better as Panny is what i often heard in the beginning last year, the same i'm reading now in the new Sammy thread), but as time slowly goes by they'll get more negative.
Will the same happen now? :)

the 1080i imgae come in 540 lines and then the other 540 lines to create the 1080 image. Bobbing the image takes the first 540 lines creates the other 540 lines by combining lines from the first 540 lines to create the lines inbetween them. and ignoring the second 540 lines of info coming in. So basically its ony using 540 lines of the picture info to create the image on your screen instead of the full 1080.

who knows. I think a big difference was the picture on last year's Sammy was never as good as the Panny. But the new Sammy has raised the bar.
I guess we'll know when the new Panasonics come out.

Huh? I thought Matsushita(Panasonic parent company) was far and away the largest electronics company.
Bengbeng 03-23-07, 11:39 AM The 50 was very dark muted compaired to the 42 inch.
According the specs the 42" is able to produce a higher brightness than the 50".
But strangely, according those same specs, both should have the same Contrast ratio. (which ain't possible or the 50" should be able to produce deeper blacks)

sounds like somethings funny in the numbers

Are you trying to tell me you set 2 different brands of TV's to the same numerical video settings? It just don't work that way. A setting of 50 on a Samsung is not the same as a seting of 50 on a Hitachi. And using default (reset) settings are no way reflective of a TV can do. Most plasma look terrible with default settings.

chris98007 03-23-07, 11:48 AM You guys have to understand that i am simply reporting what i saw. I have a 2 year old hitachi 57s715 rptv which at the time wa rated very well. So i am use to the large screen viewing.
Who knows maybe the set was bad. They had just taken it out of the box. With the exact same settings on both the 50 and 42 there was no comparrison. I really really wanted to like the 5054. But i saw what i saw. The cc guy agreed with me.
I tried to brigten it, but in doing so i lost all black level. I am not saying sammy is better or worse then anything out there. What i am saying is based on specs this should be a good PDP. Atleast as good if not better then the older 5073.
What gives?? Has anyone else seen this PDP? I just want to know if maybe the set they put up is bad.

Interesting omeletpants. I generally agree with you here. Samsung has come a long way and has shown they are clearly commited to bringing the best of these display technologies to the market.
Like you said, viewing makes all the difference. Consumer Reports is at best a guide. Clearly people all over are choosing the Sammy's picture.
discopaul 03-23-07, 01:01 PM who knows. I think a big difference was the picture on last year's Sammy was never as good as the Panny. But the new Sammy has raised the bar.
Obviously based on recent sales, most people do not agree with that statement.

I didn't see the 42' inch set at my CC. I didn't notice that it was any darker or brighter than the other 50' models and I stared at it for a good 1/2 hour. (it was next to the Panny, Hitachi, and LG)
chris98007 03-23-07, 03:33 PM Maybe it was the set i was looking at. There is no way that any of you would not have noticed it. If i tried to turn up the brightness the blacks would fade.
