Hi all,

I recently got my Oppo 970 hooked up to my new Panasonic 42PX600U plasma via HDMI. The previous DVD player was a very old non-progressive player hooked up with S-video.

Now, to be honest, I don't see a huge difference, but it's hard to say since I don't have them both hooked up so I can't A-B easily. Either way, I plan to keep the Oppo since I need the old player for a different room.

I realize you can switch between 480i/480p/720p/1080i with the Oppo. My question is, how did you all decide what to use? Differences on one movie I watched seem very minimal to me. One thing I did notice is, when looking at the Oppo screen (the blue one with a lighter blue "wave" across it), that looks best in 480i - the other resolutions show some blockiness around the edges of the lighter blue. Does that in itself mean I should stick to 480i?

If anyone has a particular movie or scene that they recommend to use for setting up the Oppo, I'd appreciate hearing some suggestions. I do also have the old DVE disc which I haven't yet tried.

If anyone reading has the 970 with Panasonic PX600U, I'd be interested to hear your settings as well.

Thanks!

I have a 50" Panasonic and use the Oppo 970. I have the Oppo output set to 720P over HDMI. What connection/cabel are you using?

I have noticed that on some DVDs there is very little difference-- on other, mostly newer widescreen DVDs, the difference is very great-- certainly not HD, but getting very close.

I am very, very pleased with the Oppo 970 / Panasonic together.

You might get more response by posting to the 970 thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=682896

Use whatever resolution looks best to you. If you see no difference, then it doesn't matter. Your display is 1024x768; I suspect 720p would be the best match for the native resolution, but trust your eyes.

I doubt if the appearance of the logo is a good indicator. You should definitely use your DVE disc. All player-display combinations must be calibrated individually.

Before you say you don't see a difference, listen to what one of the guys above said. Some DVD's there doesn't appear to be that much of a difference. On DVD's that have been encoded to be almost reference quality, they look almost HD. For example, Star Wars Episode I, there isn't much difference. Star Wars Episodes II and III, since they were a few years apart from Episode I and were encoded better... there was quite a bit of difference.
